Dempsey's dangerous tackle the correct call, says umpires

Great tackle. Anyone saying otherwise is clueless.
Or in the case of Ball, blatantly lying in the name of trying to save face, but judging by the reaction here, it's backfired.

It's especially disappointing as Ball was as hard as a cat's head himself (without being at all a thug) and very courageous. He knows the score on what is over the line and what is not.

I'd say he's more towing the company line here than expressing a personal opinion. Clueless either way.

Yes, hence saving face or at least attempting to.

Hasn't worked though, if anything judging by the reaction here, people are far more incredulous over the comments than the actual decision.

I'd vote for Pauline for PM before i'd put a vote for Ball to take over the umpiring department.

Never thought one of the toughest players I saw play would turn into such a little lap dog.

Let's not go too far, Dapper.

You don't get a job of any significance at AFL HQ without your brown nosing and doublespeak credentials being exhaustively vetted. You can tell a person who works at the AFL is willing to spout off the incomprehensible nonsense that Ball just did simply by the fact that they already work there.

Quite simply that is the most eloquent and beautiful way to describe someone as a flog.

Not sure what else Dempsey could have done. Gaff jumped just before he got tackled. Should have been a ball up.

Crowd around me were mostly confused about it, no one could work out what it was for. I was sitting in the third tier, a fair way from the tackle and we though we must have missed something off the ball. Actually I think I was also complaining about the stupid handball from Lycett (?).

Confusion around where I was sitting too, most people thought it was for a dropping the ball against Gaff. Bemusement when the umpire indicated the other way.

Was nothing wrong with the Dempsey tackle.

McEvoy did that to Zeibel a few weeks ago and that was also given a free against for dangerous tackle.

I thought of this too, but McEvoy was in the wrong on this one. He lifted Ziebel off the ground, then realised the problem and tried to let him down gently; was no harm done but I can understand why it got paid.

The Gaff one is just bullsh!t. Total crap.

Where's the ball?

Gaff had the ball in hand at all times. Could see the AFL suggesting a difference based on that..

Just an observation.

Go Catters

The ball spilled when McEvoy tackled him. And rather than slamming him he held him a bit and then let him go.

He did everything to avoid hurting him. And was pinged.

You can see him open his arms to release him from the grip...

At worst.. free kick.. but I say that meaning worst case decision... very reasonably play on...

I have been calling it for the majority of the season but there has been a significant decline in the standards of umpiring and calls made. Hear me out first, we are all human and prone to mistakes however through the year there have been a number of obviously bad calls that a junior umpire in under 10's could have called better.

Whatever is happening at the umpires training academy it isn't working and it kills the spirit of the competition in how we are seeing the game with over umpired game after game and week after week. Going back to the discrepancies in free kick counts and issues with calls I think it's fair for the football supporters to be irate, frustrated and angry with the standards.

Besides the Dempsey tackle which was anything but a tackle, I watched in dismay when Liam Picken ran down Hannebury who was on a run, brought Hannebury to ground with a text book tackle to see Hannebury spill the ball and have it called play on. This sort of stuff with these 2 examples is the sort of thing that annoys most fans out there.
