This side has as much depth as we have seen for a while. Depth for mine is a key ingrediant in having a fair dinkum tilt at the big one....Here is where we stand for season 05...Positional team settings are speculative but educated guesses that can be justified. No Interchange settings. Players with *means would be 1st's starters on the bench. Players in the first row are all senior preferred regulars.Understudy's are all listed below each player

B: CMorrison - Presty - Wakelin
..... Swan - Maxwell - JCloke*

Hb: Clement - Walker - Cole
...... Lokan - T Cloke - Williams
...... Egan

C: Johnson - Didak - Lonie
.....Lockyer* - BShaw - Rowe
.....Rusling - Obree - RShaw

Hf: Buckley - Rocca - Frazer
......King - CCloke - Burns*
......BDavies - Davidson - ZLeonard

F: Caracella - Tarrant - L Davis
.....HShaw - Morrison

Foll: Richards - Licuria - Wowoedin
...... Fanning - Holland*- Iacobucci

Any thoughts....??essentially - Obree -Williams -Lokan -King -Maxwell -RShaw
And D Swan might struggle to be in our first side this year which means they will play when injury permits. Its not a bad list when you consider it for depth purposes. Cam Cloke needs to be squeezed in somehow as he is physicall and with his size will intimidate a fair few opponents next year.

i cant belive you have the ******** hack WALKER at Centre Half Back

Perhaps being generous but he will ultimatley be groomed for CHB...Wakelin will have a bit off the workload taken from next year and guys like Walker will have to take more responsibility. You cant have a guy with Walker's physique, strength and ability to run discounted as he is only 20.
No doubt he is an athlete playing footy but thats the way footy is these days.

We now have very very good depth. In the long run the fact that the 10 kids were played last year will add a lot of depth. I hoipe not all of it will be exposed though, I want the perfect run with injury!

We have slightly improved our mid-tier depth with Caracella and Morrison and the bottom end of the list's experience (5 more players with Senior experience than this time last year) however we will never be able to cover our top tier depth if we have an injury run like last year.

I just hope if we do get injuries this year it isn't the Rocca's, Buckley's and Tarrant's going down..no depth will cover talent like that.

Agree we definitely have more depth this year, the question remains whether we have the talent, especially if we lose Rocca, Buckley or Tarrant for any length of time. The answer to the question (whether we have the talent) is in the hands of Didak, Fraser, C Cloke, B Shaw, R Shaw, Walker, Lonie, Richards, and other younger players. They MUST improve, and perform consistently, if Collingwood is to be competitive in 2005. If they dont go the next step, then our new-found depth will serve only to keep us off the bottom of the ladder.

Yeah, especially the part where we found out that a whole bunch of them were duds, and de-listed them in favour of new kids. Being able to find out once and for all Shacks, Mullins, Nixon and Crow were relative duds was fortunate enough, because it made de-listings easier, but guys like Rowe, C2, Stretch and Maxwell were all very, very pleasant suprises.

Absolutley agree but no team can adequatley cover their big guns getting injured unless your Brisbane circa 02-03. Essendon cant replace Lloyd or Hird..Carlton cant cover Livingston & Teague..etc etc...

I hope Tex can fulfil his potential and become a great CHB for us. He has all the tools to do so, he just needs to know how to use them.
what tools.....he needs to learn to play AFL football first. Then he needs to find some skill.

Attacking Walker is poor form.

Let's get a few things straight, he is a kid and a big kid for that. Subsequently, like ruckman and key position players, he can be expected to develop later than the likes of Rowe. Let's not forget Presti took a long time to find his feet and Richards only showed glimpses of his potential this year.
Incidentally, Richards is more than a year older than Walker.
I admit, Tex has seemed lost out there a hell of a lot, but there have been priceless glimpses.
The most notable for mine was four quarters of outstanding, dominant football against Tasmania for Willi. Walker was brilliant in defence, not only handling recent AFL forward Trent Bartlett, but driving out of defence. His attack on the ball, power marking and long, clearing kicking were exceptional.
Walker then backed up last year with an exceptional performance against the Western Bulldogs and gave further encouraging glimpses in the latter stages.
He did enough, to give the optimist in most reason to think that should the cards fall right he could be a truly dominant defender.
So for "BrilliantPies" to write him off as a ********in hack is fairly poor form. I'm willing to back young Tex to make you eat your words.
The kids only 20 for ********s sake.

While I'm rollin...

I'm also buoyed by the improved depth that the club appears to have on paper, but of course all is dependent on the improvement of the kids coming through. No doubt, some will fail, a few will be brilliant and most somewhere in between.
Anyway, my first and second Collingwood teams for round one 2005

B: Johnson, Wakelin, Maxwell
HB: Clement, Presti, Morrison
C: Lonie, Buckley, Woewodin
HF: Caracella, Cam Cloke, Tarrant
F: Didak, Rocca, Burns
Foll: Fraser, Holland, Licuria
Inter: Rowe, Richards, J. Cloke, Davis.

and...

B: Lokan, Hall, Swan
HB: Egan, Walker, H. Shaw
C: Leonard, O'Bree, R. Shaw
HF: Davidson, T. Cloke, Rusling
F: Williams, Morrison, King
Foll: Fanning, B. Shaw, Lockyer
Inter: Iacobucci, Davis, O'Brien

Just before you get to excited, no I didn't include Walker despite by previous post. He's not there yet, but he will be and it will only take two to three impressive VFL performances to earn promotion even with a full list.

walker=dud end of story.

Well, when you put it that way, yeah I can see your point. You both mount exceptionally good cases. Genius.
It's the sign of great supporters to just right off 20-y-o kids that are slow to develop.

Walker a dud? I don't think he is much of a natural footballer but neither was Kouta. He tall, strong, quick and has reasonable hands. Let him have a crack at playing the game with decent coaching before pronouncing him a hack. Plenty of players take time. At least he ahs the physical attributes to be a seriously good player. If nothing else he can be played in roles that show his capabilities and he will be good trade value - especially since we can argue we need to clear talls to give Travis, Hall etc a go. I wouldn't have him in the senior side yet but he's all upside. If we get on a roll I'd bring him in to bring on his development and at least show him off to clubs looking for athletic talls - that all 15.

He can jabso. He is improving all the time, and will prove an MM masterstroke. Has all the tools to succeed....except for a footy brain, which I hope he develops.

Although I did not envisage this post being about Tex I knew slotting him at CHB would be controversial. To all the naysayers out there next year will bring out another step forward in Walkers development. This year he showed glimpses and Iam sure Malthouse will utlise his physical attributes in the key back role. Wakes is 30 next yr and presti is 27 so in the scheme of having a succession plan Walker needs to br groomed for a backline role. At this point he is the most experianced of Hall,Morrison,TCloke, who are vying for those backline roles.Maxwell will be his only real competiton for a gig and dont be suprised to see both playing alongside eachother next yr.

MM has been quoted as saying (2004) that in the next 2-3 years he believes Tex Walker will become one of the dominant CHB's of the competition - the dudes 20 and his performances last year at Willi were outstanding - Bradley Gotch (Willi coach) also stated that Tex was the most impressive collingwood listed player at willi last year - his disposal is also excellent when he's got his confidence up - he can hit a target 50-60 m away off 1 step out of the backline and did so regularly for willi last year - hes also winning sprints during the pre-season which at 196cm and over 100 kg's is very impressive - one to watch this year for sure
