The most important man at Collingwood in the busy months ahead, Derek Hine has been a recruiting guru since his arrival in 2004. He's done a phenomenal job with the players he's been able to recruit; top draft picks in Pendlebury and Thomas, Reid and Brown and Sidey and Beams, and rookie elevations Harry O, Wellers and Blair. I've got no doubt some of the success is due to him and the position we're in over the next couple of years is a credit to him and his staff who are out there working around Australia searching for the next Collingwood player.

Well done Derek, may you find another gem or two in this year's draft.

He gets a lot of praise but I think it's well deserved, it's easy to look at the fact that guys like Thomas and Pendles where drafted with early picks and not give him the credit he deserves for picking them but really Pendles was not rated that high at all and has probably been the best player to come out of that draft and we got him at 5. Getting a solid spine in Reid, Brown and Dawes in the one draft was also inspired and the amount of great rookie elevations we have had is a huge part of our success our recruiting department have been epic.

Great thread.

The nature of his job means he isn't always going to get it right, but he's got it right more often than not in the last 5-6 years - the proof is in the premiership pudding.

The rookies have been the standout success stories for mine - Wellingham, Macaffer, O'Brien, Blair and Toovey, bypassed by every other club but now premiership players.

Keefe, Young and Hunter give us reason to be pretty optimistic for the next few years also.

No doubt he'll find another player or two for us come November to keep us clallenging for more premierships.

Did I mention the premiership?

Derek Hine deserves as much credit as anyone for the premiership and the incredibly bright future of our squad. +1.

Hands down the best recruiter of no name talent in the AFL.

Where he has plucked some of our premiership players from, Derek and his scouts only know.

Without his hard work, and absolute brilliance in spotting talent, we wouldn't have won a flag.

Pay him what he wants, he has to stay at the club to ensure our continued success once the great man takes over as coach.

Gratz Derek Hine, you should have been awarded a premiership medal too.:thumbsu:

Would love to know his selection criteria/formula

Ill put it up there with the KFC secret herbs and spices :D

Great thread. In 6 years, he started in 2004 draft, he has built the mighty Collingwood machine of today.

He has drafted or traded in 17 players from our premierhsip 22 and he elevated Maxwell in 2004 from the rookie list to the senior list.

Only Alan Didak, Ben Johnson, Heath Shaw & Dane Swan were on our senior list when Derek arrived.

IN HINE WE TRUST!!!!

Premiers...woooo hooooooo. Chrissy Tarrant fa la la la laaa, la la la laaaa

Just read on Nick's he was a carlscum supporter before he came to us, i'm sure they'll be sniffing around.

The man is basically Jesus.

When he appeared in the background of a few interviews in the rooms after the premiership I saluted him. My mate was like "lol wat r u doing?"

He just doesn't understand...

He has been a star for this club. So much goes into winning a premiership but it all starts with recruiting and Hine has been truly inspired. A big cheers to Jason Taylor as well who I believe is Hines 2IC and the rest of our army of scouts.

"Kudos to Derek Hine, the Pies' recruiting manager, works like crazy and is a super nice person to go with. Deserves lots of praise."

Hine = special
do they all work out? no, but the ones that do are awesome!

He's done a fantastic job. He certainly can identify potential.

This draft I think he's left with...

R1 --
R2 --
R3 44, 45, 60
R4 77
R5 78, 94
R6 95, 111 (Blair elevation ??)
R7 128 (Young elevation ??)
R8 145 (Reed elevation ??)

Not sure if there'll be any other elevations or if any of the other NSW scholarships players will be added but he's got at least 7 live picks. Nothing in R1 or R2 so he'll certainly have his work cut out for him.

Thanks, much appreciated.

Fireman background must have given him an eye for a smokey. ;)

Sorry.

He's exceptional at recognising the fire in the belly when he sees one.
