Simple question.
Is Geelong FC an attractive proposition for a prospective recruit or trade swap?

I really wonder.
If it's about $, NO.
If it's about Flags, not for a fair while.
If it's about a team with great infrastructure , culture, and player support, likely Yes.

Talking to many people this week, Geelong appears to have lost a lot of its appeal for more than one reason. Future success even in our era, did not seem a huge incentive.

The things that attracted Rivers, Caddy and Clark were the professionalism of the way the club is run and the prospect of on-field success.

If either of those two fall away we lose the attraction.

does geelong still have great culture?

strange what one single kick may have been because at the end of the day, we've just been to a preliminary final, came agonizingly close to getting to another grannie, knocked out in straight sets this year and you really can't help but feel unsure of which path Geelong will lead in the coming years.

Had we done better in the finals, we very well may have attracted big names to fill some of the gaps but it's not to be.

Ok let's get rid of TV- there, I've said it

So we don't have to see those games over and over ?

That's Ok but I understood at the time that Caddy's preference was to go to Essendope.

I have never thought that Geelong was terribly sexy as a destination for quality players from other clubs. We have always had trouble attracting top quality players. Ottens is probably the exception, but Geelong were on the cusp when he came to the club.

nah I wasn't referring to TV, was talking about the result in general. Playing off in another grand final would have been pretty immense for the club from a financial stand point. The publicity garnered is huge today, world wide notoriety as players of today love that shit. We just don't appeal enough at this stage and players are choosing teams who are currently in the moment like Port Adelaide, Hawthorn etc.
I wasn't serious either of course, but in light of this weeks TV discussions......

If we got Dangerfield, and yep, it's all just rumors and innuendo but that would almost have to surpass the Ottens trade. In fact, would almost be our biggest signing of all time wouldn't it?

Brian Peake was supposedly massive news at that time.

Brian Peake was indeed massive news.

The footy world was captured by the story, and when they flew him in by helicopter.....well, that was just the most amazing thing

What happened for him to end up at Geelong? I thought Essendon was the year prior.

To be honest, I have no idea what AFL players at other clubs think of Geelong as a destination. But what I do know is that from having lived in a reputedly unsexy destination, anyone wishing to attract excellent talent in less glamorous places have to work twice as hard for diminishing returns.

How Port have turned the 'Adelaide is a ****hole' image around is slightly unbelievable. Whatever they've done, whether it's the shiny new Oval or sheer youthful exuberance, has overcome frankly untrue preconceptions of a city. Geelong have pretty much everything they have except a loudmouth Prez and an inverted age demographic. Image is everything, I guess.

I think Geelong just has to stick to its guns and the core principles that have produced success. Hard work, an one in all in attitude, sacrificing personal enrichment for team success, humility in victory or defeat, and strong onfield/off field leadership are all great ideas for any young man to aspire to. I think we have such an image that those who find those expectations appealing will self-select themselves, à la Caddy and Rivers. And they have slotted in perfectly.

Free agency was not around back in the golden era.
Also, the kids being drafted these days are absolute pussies.
They spend a year interstate and miss mummy and daddy and want to go home.

Apologies if this has been posted.

Meeting Scott and the culture he is cultivating probably doesn't fill one with a great deal of confidence. I'm sure most players can see straight through him.
Do you giggle to yourself when you post this rubbish.

We've just had one of the best eras the game has ever seen, since 2004 we have been a very strong side playing finals every year but one, 2006. Even before that in the 90's we were playing finals, we made 5 GF and unfortunately lost.

Geelong is a very professional and extremely well run club, has good leaders on and off the field. Obviously every player has their own preference. Geelong obviously doesn't have the pulling power of say Hawthorn, but apart from them we are pretty even with every other side.

Over the years we've picked up ottens, mcintosh, rivers, caddy, Clark, some very handy players right there.

In most professional sports small market teams are always on the back foot for attracting talent. Geelong has brought the stadium and facilities up to date very well in recent times which helps in a superficial way. But in the end anyone who wants to live in a big city will probably never want to come down. The beach/surf lifestyle isn't much of a pull when you can get that with much more sun at most of the other interstate teams.

In the end the club employs many people and pays a lot of money to find players who are happy to come down, so as fans there is not much we can do other than make noise during games and perhaps come up with a better chant than gee-long.

Dude it's time to move on from your "ex" sure he rebuffed your advances, but what did you expect he has a wife. Your heart will find another and soar into the skies of love.

I think that you'll find Mitch Clark completely disagreeing with you there. Scott was reportedly the big reason for why Mitch nominated us.
