People cared about apartheid?... wow, who would have thunk that?

It’s not a question of caring or not caring about it. I understood the sporting ban by most agencies on South Africa and I applaud them for it.

But do you think black West Indies players who went there are somehow pro-apartheid or pro-racism because they threw a ball at 11 other blokes on a field for some money? As I said, do yourself a favour and actually look into the stories and reasons behind people going on those tours and see if you can justify the treatment they got in response

It’s the response of people like you that resulted in West Indies players basically having their lives destroyed afterwards.

Strike breakers?

fu** who cares seriously

People with a moral compass?

Those WI players made their choices and there's small wonder that they were ostracized after they broke the boycott.

You seemingly have great sympathy for a handful of cricketers ahead of millions of black Sth Africans who were (often violently) discriminated against on the basis of nothing more than the colour of their skin.

This comment makes zero sense.

It's not a question of caring or not caring??

That's exactly what it was at the time.
If people cared - and thankfully large swathes of the world's sporting community did - then they signed on to the boycott.

If people wanted to put their own interests above the suffering of others - well, they made their bed, and history/society rightly judges them harshly.

Um, f***en what????

Since when in blue f*** is it impossible to have sympathy for both?

Is it even financially viable to play a full test series in nz? They get sh*t all crowds and ratings

The crowds will be full if Australia, India or England tour - perhaps South Africa as well. Of course, you have to take Covid restrictions into account.

Don't pretend that crowds are the reason your lot aren't touring btw.

Really? Every time I’ve watched a test in nz the crowd looks almost empty, maybe bad timing? This is pre covid

No, but that's not what was being argued. People said they were morally low because they cared more about money than they did about their fellow man suffering from racism. That's why people say it's a matter of caring or not caring.

I reckon if they finally built that new stadium in Auckland, they might get a decent crowd. If they want to be taken seriously as a cricketing power, they need to pull big crowds in big cities, which isn't going to happen if they're giving prime tests to Napier and Mount Maunganui.

What has the choice of venue got to do with being taken seriously as a cricketing power. If anything, those boutique stadiums are proper cricketing venues versus say Auckland (Eden Park) which hosts other sports.

We are the best or second best team in the world. Australia don't want to lose here so they won't tour.

is it true the NZC incurs a financial loss with every test match?

That’s not your judgement to make. As victims of racism themselves as I’m certain they would have had a stance on it. They were also poorly paid by their own board, many of them had families and needed to find a way to provide for them and anecdotally many of them felt it would actually improve black and white relations in SA to see a team of black men mixing it with the whites.

No one comes out and condemns Barry Richards for representing that country who actually ENFORCED apartheid but these guys get judged for playing against them.

Everyone is allowed an opinion, and I'm not the only one to feel this way.

Great. That doesn't make them automatically correct. Other West Indies cricketers disagreed.

By that logic I can justify bank robberies due to financial hardship.

And did it?

The aboriginal team that toured England, the colonial master that essentially legalised the murder of their fellow aboriginals, and being paid to play there: where do they stand in the moral debate?
They didn't have any political power, or alternative ways to play cricket for money. The West Indies had their own test team that the sellouts could have tried harder to make, or if they were in it already, they could have bargained for better wages.

Yes, a test team that was the best in the world and at any given time 11 vacancies.

Bank robbery is, in most countries, illegal. These tours were not. It’s a poor comparison.

And yes there were many testimonies that suggested it did make a positive impact.

Congratulations. Is your #1 test team making money on tests? Do you think selling out a 30 000 seat stadium in Auckland has the potential to make more money?

I'm not a CFO at NZC, but all I'll say is you can keep your money and #5 ranking and we'll keep our test mace thank you very much.
