thread needs more ruck talk, serious weak spot, understand we dont need superstar, but hopefully pittonet steps up

McEvoy gets the job done, Fitzpatrick can back him up. Swans and Bulldogs made the grand final this year - Swans ruck stocks aren't exactly incredible and the Bulldogs play with a combo of part-time ruckman. The ruck is not an issue for us to compete this year - the clearances however is where we need to improve.

When Sic gets a free run at the ball, he's a great overhead mark.

To improve, he needs to:
(1) Bulk up a bit, so he doesn't get pushed off the ball so easily, and,
(2) Keep his feet in the marking contest. If he doesn't mark it, he always seems to end up on the ground and the defender runs away

I think that Sic will be better with better players around him. He suffered as he was often getting the best defender. With hopefully Shoey and Vickery in the forward line next year he will get the third defender and be able to get off the chain a bit.

Burton - Tall Defender/Tall Forward looks a natural talent, he looked better in defense in the AFL, so might take Gibsons spot when he retires
Hartung - Has a chance to take Bradley Hills spot as run with winger
Sicily - 30 goals in his 1st full season was great, hopefully he can aim for 40 this yr as our 3rd tall forward/utility forw
O'Rourke - i hope he gets more opportunity, has progressed a lot since coming to the club, if he can become a 25+ poss mid will help our depth in mids
Howe - not sure about him, his performance at AFL have been all over the place, some very good games and some very bad games, needs consistancy
Brand - our next FB, he played about 9 really good games out of 11 games last yr, im excited by his potential
Heatherley - i would like him to get some more game time, he and Brand could be our future tall defenders
Miles - i really like this kid, cant wait for him to debut, the only thing against him is his small and light frame, but has skill and run

O'Brien, Pittonet, Lovell, Hardwick - havnt seen enough from them for me to be excited to see them at AFL yet

JOR
Stewart
Woodward
Brand

I really hope Woody can overcome his knee woes. He has all the potential to make a splash in the AFL.

There's just something about JOR that I just can't let go of yet. Could do a Scully and improve out of nowhere. Would love him to. Has all the tools.

Stewart excites me purely because we don't have the same rookie drafting success of say a Swans/WB. Not often a rookie gets elevated and plays mid year at the Hawks.

I desperately want Brand to be the one key defender we pick up for peanuts in the draft and develop in to an excellent AFL player. Hardly ever do it. Most clubs do. So close, c'mon Russell!

Who are you keen to see develop?

In order of potential development I will be focussing on ...
  1. Burton
  2. Lovell
  3. Sicily
  4. Brand
  5. Woodward
  6. Howe
  7. Heatherly
  8. Pittonet
  9. O'Rourke
  10. Hartung
  11. Hardwick
  12. Miles
  13. Glass
  14. Stewart
  15. Surman
  16. Litherland
  17. O'Brien.
I expect all of these guys to get game time this season which will shine some light on whether or not they have what it takes to be part of the next flag.

Looking at old threads on Fitzpatrick, it looked like he had a lot of potential. Has great speed and durability, was great up forward early in his career but was injury riddled and had issues with his chronic fatigue and Diabetes. I hope he can shine in season 2017

As a reference point, Gunston's equivalent year (age wise) to Sicily's 2016 was 2013. They both played the respective seasons in full as 21yr olds. Gunston kicked 46 goals in 2013. Sicily is some way behind but has played less games. If he can track anything like Gunston I would be most pleased.

O'Rourke is the one for me.

Nearly every single club in the comp has received a very talented player from GWS for absolute peanuts in the past few years.

So many examples of this it's not even funny.

We coughed up our 1st pick (19) for O'Rourke and unfortunately at this stage he hasn't shown much to suggest why we gave that up for him and why he was taken at pick 2 in his draft.

When we traded for him i was convinced i saw enough to suggest he would be a 200 + gamer for us but he just hasn’t come on.

Big year for him coming up.

Pittonet - Coming along really nicely in my eyes, can see him stamping himself as our #1 ruck in a while. He's not ready yet but the earlys signs are very good.

Lovell - Hopefully we get to see more of him next season. Saw a bit of him at Box Hill before my move away and his spin move is the stuff of dreams. Absolutely nuts.

Burton - Super composed, beautiful by foot. Thought he did really well from limited games and even took a few kick outs late in the year which tells me he's highly rated.

Brand - I'm big on him, again from his early Box Hill games he just looked a level above those around him. Thought he was good to very good in his AFL games.

O'Brien - Quite a big year for him I feel. One thing he has is that genuine one grab clunk. Good shot for goal too and seemed to add a bit of versatility as the season went on. Rate him.

Hartung - Watching him closely in his draft year and wanted him at the club for pace and footskills. Spot open lad, go claim it.

Don't get the Howe love. Often looks like a deer caught in headlights and don't see him having much upside going forward.

It's nice everyone is so optimistic about our young talent, and with some of them rightfully so. But as it stands we have just traded three players and recruited three players, we need to free up three spots on the main list for our draft selections. Who goes from the senior list? Only names that jump out at me is Spanger and Fitzpatrick. Willsmore, Miles and Webster? I haven't seen enough Box Hill games to have enough knowledge of them but this will only be Miles' third pre-season and Willsmore and Webster will enter their fourth after surprisingly being elevated to the senior list after one year on the rookie list. Have they done enough to warrant staying on the list? Are they even contracted for 2017?

As for the rookie list, Woodward upgraded to the senior list with pick 108 and Miller-Lewis delisted allows us to take two picks into the rookie draft.

Hawks had 39 on the primary list 4 rookies and 1 cat b rookie (glass) after our other cat b rookie (Shem) was delisted.
So we only need to delist 2 to have our 3 draft picks.
If we have 40 on the primary list that limits us to 4 rookies plus up to 3 cat b rookies unless they change the list rules which is possible.

One proposal for next year as part of phasing out the rookie list was to allow them to play seniors without upgrading. Not sure if 47 will stay the magic number though.

I think the reason we were happy to give away draft picks is because we have so many youngsters on the verge of making it in the AFL.

I don't see Howe as a defender, he always looks more comfortable roaming in the midfield as an inside/outside player.

I hope to see Lovell get regular games next year. Probably as a mid/forward initially, then gradually into a full-time midfield role.

Kade Stewart mid/forward. He has shown plenty at VFL level and has been ok at AFL level. A solid weights program should help him, just a kid at this stage and very light, but with a good frame to work with.

Also looking forward to the debut of Teia Miles. He would only be able to play mid or mid/fwd at AFL level I think, but he has plenty of dash and courage.

Cheers for all that.

Well as much at we are light on ruck, KPF and KPB players, Fitzpatrick and Spanger seem like the obvious two to delist.

Except that injuries to talls kill our structures so I'd prefer to have a few spares on the list.
Fitz misses mainly due to a bad concussion, hopefully he is ok. Spang is our of contract but unless they can find a DFA replacement he's a good chance for another year just based on how thin we are for KPP

Do any of the regular posters here who have inside word or contacts at the club care to shed light on who they hear the club is most excited about?

Anyone know a player personally whose said really good things about one of the kids?

I'm sure a TOB type who often is an easy target for a supporter on the outside may be seen entirely different inside clubland.

Anyone have any tastey tidbits?

Gunston also had Rough and Buddy around him so was getting the third defender. Sic was often getting the number one defender.

This reasoning has popped into my head as well. I guess it doesn't really matter because this is the road we're going down. Fingers crossed.
