did we really draft Walker at 6

Disaster may be overstating it. The guy has played 148 games, so that is a significant contribution, and at the same time evidence that our list has been over-rated. With 20/20 hindsight he would probably have been value as a third round pick. Profound, I know.

Both the Eagles and Freo stuffed up by missing Black didn't we?

Geez, didn't the Eagles waste there number 12 and 13 picks!

Thompson was a good get at 82! I'd forgotten he went that late.

Clem would've been great if not for the knees. And Holland was good for us, better for the pies, and I remember when Drummiw traded him he said it was really hard to let him go... Grandson has given us 148 games, so while he isn;t, was never and never will be a star, he's been a "good servant". We probably took him for his terrific pace - how's that for irony!! ;)

Who would have been better to take than Walker (that was drafted after pick 6)? I reckon there's only about 10 players:

Chris Tarrant (#8) - doubt we'd have him now... ;)
Chad Cornes (#9) - would quite likely have been traded back to an Adelaide club
Dean Solomon (#20) - see Tarrant ;)
Nick Stevens (#25) - would have gone home by now
Simon Black (#31) - who knows?
Adam Goodes (#43) - who knows?
Matthew Scarlett (#45 - or was he F/S?)
Beau McDonald (#73)
Nathan Thompson (#82) - who knows?

Lots of others who would be Walker's "rough equivalent", but wouldn't have necessarily provided a whole lot beter value over the past 10 seasons:

Shane O'Bree (#10)
Shannon Watt (#14)
Brodie Holland (#26)
Rowan Jones (#28)
Ian Perrie (#49)
Nathan Brown (Melb) (#66)
Richie Vandenberg (#78)

So yes, Walker at #6 seems very over-priced in hindsight, but most players only last about 4 years and less than 50 games in the system, so he's done very well for himself considering that.

Not bad pick as drafts go. He's nearly had 150 games. Would probably have racked up as many games on another list somewhere. You'd definitely put it down as a win.

with 20/20 hindisght he'd still be top 20. Have a look at the rest of the names. Plus it was in the days of Neeshams run-and-gun style so he would have been looking for speed.

PS if you reckon that's a dud take alook at 1998 when we picked Daniel Schell over Tyson Stenglein and Andrew Embley.

Yep, any draft pick who gets 150 games on the board is a big win. If you're going to have a sad about Walker why not about other years draftees?

What a spin out - we could've picked Luke Power or Chad Cornes [ unless Cornes was father-son for Port - not sure about that]....

Picking Holland ahead of Black was a blooper, shocking decision

Nah, Luke Power went before our first pick, but Chaddie was just a regular selection, not a F/S. Could've had him, or Black, or Adam Goodes.... Or Tarrant or Solomon too... ;)

16. Clem Michael - Freo
26. Brodie Holland - Freo

31. Simon Black - Bris
32. Troy Johnson - Freo (who???)

Geez...Brodie Holland...

Clem Michael was going to be world beater so don't have a problem with that, but Brodie before Simon makes me feel ill...

I always assumed Clem was a F/S.

Don't think we did as badly as some make out. Black, Goodes and Cornes aside (Scarlett was F/S) there aren't exactly stacks of standout players we could have taken. Clem could have been anything if not for his knees, Walker has been serviceable if not outstanding and Holland was reasonable for a 2nd rounder.

Essendon are the real losers. Bolton at four.:o

Took Clem with 21 - why wasn't he F/S is the big question?
Took Holland with 26 IIRC.

Another 150 gamer.

They changed the rules around 2000 to allow WA and SA teams to draft father/sons from wafl and sanfl.

Was Mitch Morton the eagles first, I can't think of any others.

I thought MacIntoss was a F/S

My recollection is that he was one of those late picks like Kemp when the rule was something along the lines of each eastern states club only being allowed to take one WA boy, leaving the likes of Kemp to be drafted at 100+ because west coast were the only side able to pick him up.

I might be wrong about west coast and the south Australian clubs, but Fremantle definately weren't able to recruit father sons until 6 or 7 years ago.
