Ruck and a hard place: TIMOTHY BOYLE
The dark side of football is a quietly forgotten one that's given kudos only by those who have seen it. Players give their best because the nature of the game inspires them to give it. Then when they've given everything, they can still be criticised and pigeon-holed for its outcome. It's a beautiful danger for a spectator, but a heavy load to carry on the field.

For many players, the weight of that burden is often underestimated, and recognised only in retrospect.
Ruck and a hard place: TIMOTHY BOYLE

I like Joey, but needs to improve on his disposal and his overhead spoiling tactics, at times he can be miss-matched against a taller opponent and doesn't body them under the ball, or use 'subtle' contact in the air to his advantage.

Has a lot of go and is not afraid to put his body on the line for the sake of a team-mate

ODN - he cost us 4 goals last week and 3 this week. That's enough for me!!!

Exactly the sort of exageration I was referring to.

Let's go through them shall we?

Goal 1
Dropped marked from Betts, Lions inside 50, McLean high handball, off Murphy's hands, Patful to Johnston to Brown - Goal

Goal 2
Free against McLean to Black, to Rischitelli, to Adcock, over the back of the pack, Fev soccers off the ground - Goal

Goal 3
Lions kickout, pack near our forward 50 consisting of Scotland, Leuenberger, Sherman, Anderson over the top, punches towards boundary (right thing to do), Power gets it inside boundary, chain of handballs through corridor, kick to 50, Thornton overruns it, Brown picks up, delivers to Fev on lead - Goal

Goal 4
Anderson drops sitter. Banfield goal. Bad error from Anderson.

Goal 5
Yarran tackled in traffic, Power to Sherman to Raines to Brown - Goal

Goal 6
Anderson handballs to Thornton, Thornton picks it up at his feet running towards corridor, in the clear tries to pin point a kick in the corridor, intercepted by Staker. Kicks to Fev - Goal. Thornton's error as he was in the clear and had options.

Goal 7
Lions run it out of defence, kick inside 50m, Fev props, Jamo goes over the top, doesn't get a fist on it, goes to Staker, snap - Goal

Goal 8
Robinson to forward 50. Poor kick to Brennan, to Banfield, to Brown - Goal. Houlihan was the one running back to try to stop Banfield but momentum saw him run past.

Goal 9
Free against Jamo, Goal to Clark

Goal 10
Russell kickout, Warnock can't mark, give to Brown, goal from outside 50m.

Goal 11
Waite to Carrazzo, too high, Rich to Black - Goal

Goal 12
Lions out of defence, Rich inside 50m, off pack, Brown recovers first, kicks from 50m on boundary - Goal

Goal 13
Carlton out of defence, off Warnock's hands, Rich to Brennan to Drummond, centres inside 50m to the corridor, Banfield on lead marks - Goal. Opponent Russell 10m behind anticipating kick to square.

Goal 14
Banfield out of traffic on wing, to Black, off hands, Rischitelli taps forward running towards goal, Gibbs trying to check him but not give away free, Gibbs slides past as Rischitelli gathers ball, Rischitelli - Goal

Goal 15
Lions from half back, Merrett to Raines to Redden to Brown on lead - Goal

Goal 16
From centre square, punch goes to Johnston, to Brennan, inside 50m, Brown marks on second grab - Goal

There you go, one goal as a result of an Anderson mistake. Involved in one other passage of play that lead to a goal, but the ultimate error was Thornton's.

Anderson was also not in the vicinity of any marking contest that lead to a Lion's goal.

I wonder if I should go back and see if Anderson really did cost us 4 goals of Richmond's .. err, what was it? 8-9 goals last week?

What do you think?

It's a shame when people get so over wrought they start imagining things from the same old whipping boys.

This is a brand new whipping boy ODN

I think he has been bagged in every game he has played except the one where he marked backing into the Brown freight train.

Whipping boy last week, tranfers over to this week and the hysteria builds. Next week if he plays, Essendon might kick 13 goals and Anderson would get the blame for 14 of them, such is the pattern.

Sad but true. I guess this means that JR can now log onto BF in the knowledge that he won't be the target of regular "Russell is a hack" threads.

This kid was drafted as a 17 year old,
after winning the senior B&F (in a premiership year) at 16,
for Darwin Buffs in the NT, as a back.

Terrific speed off the mark, disposal has been an issue,
but that is the same with Browne and Armfield.
What has happened to Grigg, I dunno.

He was a kid spec pick at 67??? and while we haven't done too well on the specs (Raso among others), this bloke had some cred to start with.

The new whipping boy no doubt.

Cant see a spot for him in the defence when we are at full strength. It is easy to tell we are modelling our defence around Geelongs with a number of versatile talls who can play on any opponent.

The MC view the best back 6 as:
FB: Armfield Jamison Thornton
HB: Russell Austin Bower

I think Austin has had the shreds torn off him for the way he suffered his injury, as the MC were planning to have him in the team from Rd 1, and taking a much more important role than we have seen him in before. Let me tell you, the MC has enormously high hopes for Austin. They rate him up there with the more talanted youngsters we have on the list.

Very happy to hear about Austin. I was very impressed with his form last year and he was a definite in the 22 for mine. Has the size and frame to be a genuine KPD.

Any word on how long it'll be until he is back?

Anderson didn't start that well, but his second half was a lot better. Players like him need game time.
If Bower is right for next week, then Anderson would most likely be the one to be dropped, but Bower aside, there should be no changes this week.

Probably the best post i have read here is a year!!!

I asked some posters to refer to the goals he directly caused as well, but of course nobody responded, why it was only one goal, the dropped mark.

People just need to find someone to balme, and isn't it easy to pick a 12 gamer!!

Anderson is a very good prospect for us and given as many games this year will be a big bonus for us in 2011.

People are going into each game thinking Anderson is a negative, so no matter what he does it will be wrong.

Nobody has mentioned the big mark he took in the 3rd i think in front of Brown, so people sit back and encourage this kid instead of sending him to the scrap heap after 12 games.

Thanks ODN, great post!!

I think it is fair to say that ODN's post has quietened the knockers.

I thought Anderson got better & better as the game went on & started to use the ball well. 85% disposal efficiency tends to support this. On the basis of his performance on Thursday night, I think he would be very unlucky to miss out on selection this week against Essendon.

solution is easy- pick the best team available. Ratts knows what role he needs done in that spot. Can Grigg Lucas Browne Austin Joey or D Ellard (why the hell not -except he can't) get the job done the best. Regardless of how Joe went if there is a better player who is more suited for the next game he plays.

Reminds me of a Chris Rock skit.

"N......s love to take credit for stuff they just supposed to do. Let me give you an example, Ni.....s will say some sh.t like 'I take care of my kids!'.

You're supposed to take care of your kids you dumb m...f..... what you want a cookie?"

I see what you are saying, but it just reminded me of that skit is all.

I have posted before and I will again that while Anderson didn't have a bad game, it wasn't a particularly excellent one either. I don't know who his direct opponent was (Banfield?) but I didn't see him laying the sort of pressure that Bower/ Jamison / Russell/ Joseph or Armfield does on their man usually.

I would give him another shot if Bower doesn't get up but if he isn't having solid games then I think we should give another player a shot at the position as it seems to be the last that needs to be filled in our back six (a designated kicker would be nice)

Can argue over the intimate details of all this and I appreciate your level of detail but the facts are that he is a terrible decision maker, puts his immediate team mates under unneccesary pressure and is a murderer of the football. How many times does he take clean possession and use the ball correctly?

My opinion is that he is no good and there is now way he will improve on these fundamental skills required for improvement. I personally hope he is dropped and doesn't see the Navy Blue jumper again until he kills it in the Bullants.

I had the same opinion of Greg Bentley, and I see some similarities here.

Fair point, but the major thing as a tagger/stopper is how many times does his opponent do that as well? He was serviceable on Thursday, best to tell him to keep going for his marks rather than flog him for dropping one.

I had the same opinion of Greg Bentley, and I see some similarities here.

Similarities in that they both have 2 arms, 2 legs a torso and a head?

No similarities in the type of player at all.
I haven't jumped on the Joey bandwagon as he has some way to go but he is miles ahead of Bentley at any point in time.

No, not really I still think Anderson is a shit ordinary footballer whose skill level and decision making is not up to AFL standard.
both ODN and pickman have logic here

I never said in the type of player. I meant in what would be required for them to succeed at AFL level. They both had a horrible case of the fumbles regardless of how many chances they got. They both had horrible decision making every time they get the ball.

People say give him a chance. I've watched him closely for 4 games now and see 0 improvement in any part of his game. 4 games might not be enough, but how many is? How many games do you hide him down back on a sneaky forward and just wear the fact he is gonna get toweled up just so we can see IF his fumbling / nerves disappear, or IF his decision making improves?

Anderson is a second year, 22 year old, 12 game VETERAN compared to second gamer, 20 year old Banfield that he played on, and he got beaten badly. Playing a lock down role like that is not going to improve the facets of the game in which he is crap at, as he needs to get more of the ball to improve there.

He'd be horrified to think that he's lost a year as he's only 21, but by far and large we're all saying the same thing.

Anderson needs to improve and I and most agree but there is clearly somewhat more upside to Ando as there was to many other players we had on our list last year. in Bentley, Bannister, Bantick, Cloke etc.

So what will happen?
He may well go back to the Ants next week and I'm fine with that but just to waste him at this point may just be a little premature for mine.

Ando has a touch of the emus right now, but he does know how to play.
