Gun from the Riddell league, Romanyk and a few escapees from the cash starved Aberfeldie........

Wish we had a few cash starved clubs out our way. Flow seems to be continuing out of the VAFA and into the EFL

We would hope so , but anything can happen. I will say this that there is a massive effort to lift this club up the grades, how far who knows how far a suburban club can go these days.
Who have PEGS added FWIW.

The success of Beaumaris would suggest you can go all the way to the top. Not all that long ago Ormond, Oakleigh, Hampton, Parkdale, Fitzroy and others were in B grade. Some still are. While it is hard to match the networks of the elite APS and Melbourne uni clubs, there is nothing preventing any ammo club from climbing the grades.

I do feel for Whitefriars. For some time now they have consistently been the best performed football school in the ACC system. Generally stronger at school level than De La, St Bernards and St Bedes who are or have been in A grade and far superior to Mazenod who are now back in B.

Right in the heart of EFL territory with plenty of strong cashed up clubs right on their doorstep. If they can find a way to stop the player drain then they could be a real force.

You are spot on Rooster, although speaking from experience at the Nodders, if you get your house in order you can stop the drain.
Mazenod's turn around was due to a committee having a strong plan, appointing a coach who really turned around culture (Steinfort) and massive support from the school.
The school is the real key here. They started to be real supporters of the Old Boys sporting groups the offering the majority of the casual sports coaching jobs to guys that wanted to play for the football club. This had a real impact.
Even Phibbs got caught up in this at one stage as he was on the way out when Connolly got sacked but the school principal put an end to that.

What did Connolly do wrong.

Had similar problems at Westbourne a few years back. No matter how hard we tried, we could only get one or two of the schoolboys to play for the juniors on the weekend. Overt hostility from the school towards the juniors was one of the factors. Not the only one, I hasten to add, but still significant.

Since no one else is willing to dip their toe in the water, here is the early premiership market from Pendles.

Ormond $2.50
PEGS $3.00
St Mary's Salesian $3.00
Therry Penola $3.50
Preston $11.00
Oakleigh $12.00
Brunswick NOBSPC $15.00
Ivanhoe $18.00
St John's $21.00
Whitefriars $41.00

Would like a bit on Preston.

But as you say

What....this is outrageous..

Maplebet Market:

PEGS - $2.70
Ormond - $3.00
Preston - $4.50
Brunswick NOBS - $6.50
St Mary Salesian - $8.00
Therry - $12.00
Ivanhoe - $16.00
Oakleigh - $25.00
St Johns - $30.00
Whitefriars - $40.00

Have what you want on The Bullants Sideliner, they will struggle to make the 4.

But as you say

The Maplebet Market is a kneejerk reaction to the pulling power of Pendles - SMS are huge overs at the $8 mark.

Not a kneejerk reaction Pendles, just a more accurate market in our opinion.
We don't share your enthusiasm for SMS at all and think Preston will continue to rise and shine.
Other than that your market looked ok. Time will tell how these two clubs go.

You have plenty of challenges ahead of you Canada, especially with Mr Trump making his presence known to you next door.
Pendles wishes Maplebet the best of luck :thumbsu:

At the other end of the scale who will be the two sides having a kick in D2 for the 2018 season?

Nice work Pendles. Perhaps the top four are a little on the short side. Also, if Hedgey is right and Friars will be competitive if they can keep close to their best unit on the field, they appear a little long.

Hedges and others comments re Whitefriars makes me think they will struggle. St. John's as well I think.
Bedders seems to think Oakleigh have lost plenty. I think a drop to D2 for them may be something they would struggle to come back from in the VAFA.

I think the top four are a cut above the rest of the division as flag contenders. Preston or Brunswick NOBs may be able to work themselves into third or fourth position come September, but I don't see either of them being able to go all the way.

Therry make for an interesting case, any further news on the Bannisters?

The whole point of this forum is that people are entitled to be anonymous and remain that way. Hence we get in trouble if we try to "out" others. Your two posts don't seem particularly supportive of the Friars either. Referring to us as a rabble and crisis meetings. So frankly you aren't showing much support at this stage are you?

Also heard a whisper that their captain (gatehouse?) of the past 4-5 years is moving on also, as well as Tanner. moving on all the old blokes it appears.
Sinclair has indeed popped up as an assistant at SKOBs, Tanner has retired due to age/injuries/work/family, Gatehouse is continuing and not an "old bloke". Not a lot of recruiting happening at SMS, the average age is still under 25 and improvement is expected to come from their young guys getting bigger, stronger, faster.
