I just watched that video of us singing the theme song, and geez it got me pumped. I hadn't seen a win since the Carlton farce in '07 due to circumstances beyond my control (You attend 13 games for the year and miss the 3 wins) and with who we got in the last 2 drafts, plus at least 1 top 5 pick next year, I'm still confident of us becoming a powerhouse team of the competition without us resorting to scum tactics of grabing picks 1 and 2.

Call me old fashioned, but winning on Sunday felt GOOD!

Agreed mate. That feeling can't be beaten.

Those who think tanking is the only way we can rise up the ladder are on the wrong page. We'll still most likely finish down the bottom again this year (say last to 13th) but hopefully we'll get a few more wins to go with Saturday's.

If we come (at a guess) 14th, we'll still get two of the best 20 youngsters in the country....

I'm torn on this, I always hated the idea of squibbing games for draft picks when it came to the fore in 03 and 07. However with GC (& WS?) getting to farm drafts after 2009 I really want our club to have every advantage possible. Scully could well be the best #1 pick for a generation and Butcher looks like a star.

Yes it is a lottery but by having two picks in the top 5 it gives us a real advantage. Also it's not as if we are that good that this constitutes tanking because I really don't see us winning more than four games anyway.

There is a kid who played with Jack Watts last year at Metro called Butcher, who between them kicked alot of goals (180 i think). They say he will go top 3 for sure.. These two boys have the potential to turn our club around in 5 yrs into a serious powerhouse..twin tower like!! Along with scully, those two are guns!! We need pick 1&2..

I'd be happy if we got the extra pick or not.

If we do, good times will be ahead with a real possibility of having Scully and Butcher at the club. If not, then it you'd have to say that the kids are coming on quicker than expected. Which is just as great, maybe even better, news.

We could do with them, but not at the expense of cheating. The whole concept should be abolished - if you can't get a #1 pick right you're either stupid, Fremantle or both.

Scrap priorities and go for a draft lottery.

It gets rid of the tanking issue and renders scaled assistance to all teams who finish outside the eight.

But then people will still complain and call 'unfair' regardless of which system is in place - imagine the uproar if under a lottery system the current Geelong juggernaut was able to get Kreuzer as a result of their crappy 2006?

i can see us scrapping together another 4-5 wins

i think were only guna get better as the year goes on (unless we get more injuries) because some of the players we have to come back are pretty dam good... and the kids are guna keep improving... either way, were going up up up no matter wat... any pick in the top 10 can be absolute class... 4 example pick 7 last 3 years has been selwood, palmer, rich...

would be fantastic 2 grab butcher and scully, but dam winning feels good

Pretty sure Butcher plays for Vic country, Scully is playing for Metro.

In reply to the thread I don't see any harm in 'list managing' after say round 12. By that time Bailey should know which players he is going to draw a line through/cut at seasons end, so from that point on some of the older players shouldn't get a game. The club will be playing an even younger/inexperienced list by this time and probably won't win many games anyway ensuring we secure the priority picks. If I was Coach that would be what I'de be doing anyway. The club may as well take advantage of the situation we are in and make the most of it by playing as many kids as we can.

what about a premiership? (in 5 years) :D

Hmmm.......yes. The having both of eg. Scully, Butcher as opposed to only one will make a huge difference IMO with the 2 new teams coming in soon.

Im also torn with this situation

Getting the priority picks will get us Butcher and Scully.
Our midfield lacks some class and scully will give us that.
By getting Butcher we will have a solid future in terms of KP Forwards
With Jurrah Watts Butcher we can get rid of miller in the next 2 years.

I think its going to be completely worth it to win the 4 games and get priority picks. But on the other hand i never miss melbourne games in melbourne so i dont want to go knowing its important to lose.

But ive had a look at the fixture and have come to the conclusion at best we will win 6 games and thats with me being optimistic.
I think we will win 4 or 5 games.

Only time will tell

We beat a rubbish side, lets go all out and try to get a second and third win and then we can worry about conserving some energy and getting a second pick. I doubt we are good enough to win more than 4 games anyway. If we get our 3rd win up before round 11 then maybe it is best for the talented young group to go all out to try and win 8 or more games, but if we don't and I expect we won't then we shouldn't go for 5 wins. Bailey is a clever customer, and has a year left on his contract, he won't push too hard too early.

I concur. I said so at the end of my post.

In 2003 we were shit but in 2007 we were better than 5-17 - i.e. I didn't want to lose to Carlton because it would've been tanking. If it happens this year I don't believe we are tanking but part of me doesn't want to win more than four games at this point.

i can see us scrapping together another 4-5 wins
Could well happen but I'd rather win another 6,7 or 8. 4-5 more wins would still most likely see us bottom two and will rule out us getting another crack at a quality young player inside the top 5 picks. Don't think this benefits our club at all.

I dont think we do. I think we will still finish bottom 4-5 at best so we are still going to get a top 5 pick regardless. Dont be greedy like carlton. Its not a guarantee for success. I might be wrong here but i believe Luke hodge was the first no 1 draft pick to win a flag?

You could do a draft lottery every four picks.

i.e. teams that finished 16-15-14-13 go in a lottery for the first four picks. Teams that finished 12-11-10-9 have the next four picks, and so on.

It still restricts top teams getting top picks, but also minimises the prospect of tanking (the only tanking would be if a club was sitting in 12th spot and wanted to get to 13th, in order to be in the first lottery).

Won't happen though, the AFL turns a blind eye to certain things.

I agree totally bate,i am so hungry for success,im 32 watched us get flogged in 2 grand finals and have had the heatache time and time again of making finals and getting beaten...winning right now is the best feeling for a long time HOWEVER i do think picks 1 and 2 will be more better for the club than winning 6 games MAX and not getting the priority.
i tell you now it will be the difference in 3 YEARS TIME whether we play off/win the flag or make the semi or prelim...
PICKS 1 AND 2 ARE A MUST FOR THE CLUB this year HOWEVER I DO UNDERSTAND THAT WE NEED TO WIN GAMES.
On that note regardless of hawmany games we win i love the club.

Have you seen that South Park episode where Benjamin Franklin tells Government that America stands for saying one thing, but doing another?

MFC has to keep saying how hard it is trying to win, how important culture is, etc etc, but we must win less than 5 games.

same age same heart aches same memories. :( to all the younger guys who think winning 6 games is better than stocking up on talent and a second "choice" in the draft before any other club, your only trying to convince yourself. this second pick could make us a very powerful club and i think its worth a few "competitive" loss's in 2009 to have a very realistic shot at a flag in 2012.............ahhhh 1990. those two wins in a row against hawthorn in r22 and the elim final bring's back some memories:):):)
