In WA after the 50km spped limit comes in, the cops are encouraging people to dob in people who speed, they are even giving out special police report forms, so they can put down make & colour of car, time, date, rego number & asking the dobbers if they will be willing to go to court as a witness against the driver, The police did say that if it went to court it would be unlikely the charges would be upheld.
My question, SO WHAT IS THE FARKIN POINT.

Can you imagine all the fake reports by people who are pissed off with someone & use this as a way of revenge.

That's ridiculous. How can they prove how fast they were going? Are all citizens going to be given spped cameras so we can do our own citizens arrest?

err dan its not hard to tell if someine is going over 50kph.

im sure the coppers only meant if someone was going like 80kph or something

That is one of my queries, evidently you don't put down what speed they were doing, just your view they were going over the speed limit.

If only the police were as interesting in people that don't indicate. I've had two crashes because of this lovely phenomenon.

You still can't prove it, Macca.

"Um excuse me, Mr police officer, I saw this car that was going really, really fast..... 80km per/h in a 50 zone. I can't prove it, but take my word for it, okay...

lol that is really dumb and stupid and has no point to it all.dam right people can't prove it and there will be so many fake reports by people.

I hate dobbers. Unless of course you're a witness to a serious crime.

Mantis is right, people can abuse the system. Get one of your mates to dob in somoene you hate. Instant revenge.

This system sounds unworkable.

I am amazed that there hasn't been anyone on the cops side, have WA cops finally lost the plot, what about doing something to reduce the car theft figures, burglaries & home invasions against the elderly, NOOO we are going to get all the people doing 60 in a 50 zone instead.

What about this? In Hobart two of the radio stations get the public to phone in when they have spotted a speed camera and tell everyone where it is located!

Whenever the locations are read out the announcer always adds at the end of it "in the interests of road safety, slow down." Nothing the police can do about it because they claim that speed cameras are not revenue raisers but there to help curb road accidents.

But......on a certain road down there in Berriedale, just near the Grandad Tavern (Tasmanians will know), the speed limit changes from 80kph to 50 kph without any warning.
So what do "Tassie"s finest" do? Place a speed camera right on the spot where the limit changes and catch a lot of people out. Not revenue raisers? Pigs bum.
I copped a $110 fine at Easter down there!

Serves you right for driving around in the "Badlands" of the northern suburbs - bet it was in a hotted up HQ Holden as well ;)

Its like the people over here dobbing their neighbours if they water the lawn on the wrong days. We have water restrictions over here this year (thank god for the bore) and people have been dobbing their neighbours into the water corporation who proceed to hand out fines. Its bloody ridiculous!

Don't Melbourne radio stations do this as well?

I don't mind that so much. At least it's black and white if your neighbours are watering (ie. they are or they aren't). You can't prove someone is speeding. I'm happy for people to dob in those who water their lawn, because watering lawns is a complete waste of water!

Ah Gonz, I take it you know the Granada Tavern well?

And not it was actually a Toyota Conquest, not my car either.
So when the fine arrived in the mail it was sent to the owner of the car (my cousin). I was safely back in Melbourne by then.
But I did pay the fine! Although she volunteered to accept the 3 demerit points. Such nice people, those Tasmanians!

A Toyota Conquest!!!!

How are you meant to do burnouts and donuts in the Northgate carpark in a Toyota Conquest :D

May be good for fuel consumption after doing 346 blockies in the CBD though ;)

PS Yes I've been known to have a brew or two at the Grandad (going back a few years!)

Cheers

The WA initiative is stupid as many people have pointed out and no-one is going to bother going to all that trouble for no purpose.

I think that dobbing is quite acceptable though as people who break the law are doing the wrong thing

I mean sure, there has to be limits, ie you dont dob people for jay walking or taping music off CD's etc etc

But the water example is a good one - this is an issue that affects us all and if we do the right thing -others should not gain an advantage by doing the wrong thing

I am sure a lot of dobbing happened in the Victorian Gas crisis - and fair enough too.

This brings me to those who whinge about speeding fines being revenue raisers.

So what if they are?

Isn't it better to collect revenue of poeple breaking the law rather than have to raise the general taxes that everyone pays

Bottom line is that the Government needs to raise a certain amount of revenue every year. If they don't get a contribution from speeding fines, they will need to get it elsewhere, eg stamp duty land tax, motor registration fees etc

In my view, the more speeding fines the better, as at least that punishes the guilty and not the innocent!!

All the FM radio stations here do half hourly updates on speed cameras.

Now the commercial TV news channels get reports from the POLICE who tell them where radars are likely to be the next day and they warn everyone.

I guess it gets people to slow down! Or not!

That's fair enough Jars, but if they are really serious about stopping the carnage on the roads then why don't they put the cameras in the "black spot" areas?.
If the speed camera system really worked then surely we wouldn't keep getting fatal accidents on notorious sections of road caused by people speeding.
Instead of that they hide the cameras behind fences in vacant houses, on roads where there have never been accidents let alone fatal ones!
Fill up the governments coffers, but don't stop the carnage?

I do not normally speed, and would not have been doing 75kph which was 25 over the limit if I had been aware that the limit had suddenly changed from 80 to 50 without any sign posting!

If there is no sign posting then you really shouldn't have to pay the fine. Did you complain at all?

The sign was actually there but it was covered by the branches of a tree. I couldn't actually remember it, because I was back in Melbourne by the time the fine was posted out.

My cousin (who actually copped the fine because it was her car) complained, but the answer was "the sign is still visible, if she was paying due attention she would have seen it".

Ridiculous. So they want us to take our eyes off the road and try and see a partially visible sign:rolleyes:
