You need to be clear about what it is for starters, it's not an ERP system it's a Database Management System (DBMS, or RDBMS - Relational DBMS). And that's just another way of saying 'Database', but a high end one with lots of associated software services.

An ERP system requires an underlying database, in this case that database is provided by Oracle.

What Harry Tiger said. Tons of systems, most of them wildly different, use an Oracle database - it's one of the best DBMSs out there.

Knowledge of Oracle is good if you're going to be doing detailed data mining etc. but if you're a regular schmo who isn't in IT it's far more important to understand how to use whatever ERP interface the company employs.
