This doesn't apply to you but would be interesting if the commentary on Beams' weaknesses would still be published if he was still a Collingwood player. Removal of the rose-coloured glasses on ex players seems to change the tone of a number of posters
It's funny how we hate Beams leaving us but happy for Treloar to jump ship and come to us.

One did it under controversial circumstances, the other gracefully.

Spot On - Beams made a Huge Fuss out of it and Treloar did it with Class.

Do you hear many people talking the someway about Heater?

It's called supporting a club. It isn't rational.

how did he make a huge fuss? He said he wanted to go to Brisbane (for his dad or the $$ it doesn't matter). We didn't like it because we felt our bargaining power was taken away from us. Brisbane in my opinion made the big fuss.
Treloar said he wanted to come to us - similarly the Giants didn't like it because they could only deal with us.

And the Heater situation was different - we made it clear that we didn't want him. Big difference to Beams who we wanted to retain.

How is Free Agency controversial?

Beams was a required and contracted player. Persistent chatter about his motives for leaving didn't endear him to his outgoing fans either.

I don't think that free agency is controversial more so the way he seems to left the club in a petulant manner.

:D
But I admit I'm very pliable in my views, can change at a whim, except when I'm steadfast.
I think it's known as that great line from Michael Corleone in Godfather II

"We're all part of the same hypocrisy"

Change my vote to no. He needs to go.
You can't just blame the recruiter because they aren't playing well.
When we are on it looks like no one can beat us. I agree we lack certain players but dont mistake poor form and not wanting to play for your coach as poor recruiting. I have noticed you tend to get quite hysterical when we play bad.

This is a stupid conversation. We are all disappointed with the side at the moment and know they aren't playing up to their full potential. We know they're better than they are right now because we saw it last year. If we didn't have a good list (due to good list management), then we wouldn't be complaining so much. The anger right now is simply because we can see the talent there and it is the coaches job to get the best out of his players. Derek has a proven track record with recruiting that can't be questioned and generally, the type of players he tries to recruit are at the best interests of the coach. So if we're questioning why we recruit so many blokes that cannot kick, shouldn't it be at fault of Bucks? Derek doesn't just recruit guys and not tell the coach. If we had a guy that couldn't kick and Bucks didn't want him, he wouldn't be here.

if hine doesnt have any impact on who gets recruited then i wonder if we can save ourselves a fortune and just provide a list of players to buckley from the phantom draft and he can pick from them..... actually even the draft selection trials provides a list of skills and capabilities for each player....buckley could just use that data to make his selection.

We are arguably the least skilled team in the competition( Essendon excluded)player development may have contributed to that a bit, butrecruiting has to be the main factor.
Our recruiting over the last 5 years has been very poor.
Not saying we have recruited poor players but more the mix we have brought in has not been well thought out and we find ourselves with a list not suited to modern football where keeping possession and outside leg speed is key

It does beg the question of whether some of Hine's successes have been because he's been able to pick up players who have suited our previous "system", however might have lacked traits that would make a player a commodity at the draft table.

In Malthouse's time, a player like Johnno Marsh or Jack Frost who were draft bargains might have gotten away with their inability to kick. Since 2012 when we started getting carved up by the elite kicking sides like Hawthorn, those players have become less valuable. Hine may well have started zigging where he used to zag; Scharenberg, Ramsay, De Goey, Moore, Phillips, Crocker, etc. are all average or above in kicking... but the older incumbents on our list are pretty poor and won't be easily replaced/superseded.

Agree. Last 2 Off-Seasons Hine has tried to being good Kicks in:

  • Aish
  • Treloar
  • Howe
  • Varcoe
  • De Goey
  • Moore
  • Phillips
  • Crocker
