Does Murphy get to 300?

Tough (but very hypothetical) question:

If Murphy misses a game through injury and ends up on 299 with one game to play, and things go exceedingly well for us to the point where if we win said last game, we make finals, does he get a full game for 300?
Murphy in my opinion should never play again. Not even sub.

Obviously, barring an injury, he will get there.

Teague might or might not be a good coach but one thing he appears to not be is a campaigner.

Absolutely not.

He played an approximately 270 celebratory games.

And chose to demand an embarrassingly uncompetitive 30 odd extra. His choice.

That feeling is widespread. Like it or not.

Not amongst any of the Carlton supporters that I know and I know quite a few. Regardless of the number it's still shameful.

I also know Carlton supporters and not one is less than filthy how this has been allowed to play out. He'll get his precious 300. It is now too close to back out.

But it has been embarrassing. And no amount of polishing will untaint the last 2 years. Shame really. Nathan Jones struggled to 300 earlier this year, but this has been a whole next level. Jones was off the required level about his last handful of games but he still competed. Murphy has not, for way more than a handful of games.

I can't believe he's done it. Just for a number.

But anyways, to those who want to/force themselves to celebrate it, knock yourselves out. I'll stick to celebrating Curnow's earned 200 a few weeks ago and hopefully Eddie's earned 350 in the next couple.

Nobody's forcing anyone to celebrate but keep quiet on it and let those who want to celebrate do so. Some of the comments made and a lot of them have been personal have been shameful.

I think most people see it this way to be honest. It's pretty sad.

Funny to think we might be talking about Walsh in the same way in 15 or so years time at the back end of his career. It’s amazing how great players are treated by fans when the game moves past them.

Murph was a great servant through dark times and was a fantastic player. Yeah he’s been poor in recent times, not many players ending their careers have gone out on top. Give him 300, celebrate it and we roll into next year.

Rubbish, outside of a noisy minority here you'd find very few. Sad is that you're still going on about it, it's happening, the time to speak against it has passed.

I don't think many other players are carried for a whole season costing the team games and potentially a birth in finals just to get to a mile stone.

Can you name them for me?

What an absolute load of garbage.

Not off the top of my head and nor will I bother spending time trying to find examples.

I’d be interested to hear the examples of where Murphy has cost the team games and is responsible for us missing finals though.

I understand people wanting Murphy to make way for younger players to get games, but seriously to suggest Murphy has cost us games and finals is ridiculous.

We’ve won 8 games and lost 11. Of the 11 losses there were probably 4 or 5 we thought we should’ve done a lot better, could’ve won but didn’t, and they were:

Coll in r2, Bulldogs (Murph didn’t even play), Sydney, a weakened Eagles team (MM was sub), last placed North (MM sub). Win these and we’d be on 13 wins sitting fifth.

We played piss poor as a team, let teams kick multiple unanswered goals, lost centre clearances, lacked game plan execution etc.. Can’t see how you can think Murphy cost us these games.

Give him 300???? Being given 20 games devalues the othe 280 and takes away from his legacy.

You ask that question knowing that it’s impossible to blame one player solely for a loss, but the thing a lot of people would agree is he hasn’t been playing his role for the majority of the season, indeed his last block of games where he started even where some statistics may suggest he played well, some simple analysis show the negatives far outweighed the positives:
- vs Brisbane he had his biggest stats for the season but we saw the footage of him running out position chasing kicks in our forward line only to leave us exposed on the rebound through the space he should have been guarding that led to a goal
- vs Melbourne he again didn’t apply enough pressure and we were beaten badly in transition out of attack (all our other small forwards had lots of tackles except Murphy)
- vs Hawks game he kicked 2 goals but again failed to apply enough pressure and was dropped the following week
- vs Eagles he let a half back first gamer run off him and kick a goal

In and amongst that block of games he has got injured early against the Crows, missed 3 games for injury and had 3 largely ineffectual runs as the sub against Sydney, North and St Kilda.

Of course none of this was solely responsible for costing us those games but they point to a players who’s negatives regularly outweigh his positives. Since the bye pretty much everyone else has at some stage made a net positive contribution in a match except maybe Casboult and Setterfield who were both dropped (they continue to be out now due to injury).

I get the sentimentally argument that he deserves to get to 300 for being loyal but he simply cannot provide a positive contribution in any of the roles they have given him. Whilst I’m sure he’s trying, its almost a given that he won’t be able to play his role.

If the season was over I would probably be fine with just making him the sub to get to 299 then give him a run in the starting 22 for his 300th, but whilst our season is still alive it is outright negligent to put him in the starting 22 or even as the sub where the risk is he’s required to come on early.

So we now likely face a lose-lose situation where he either misses the milestone, the club get him to 300 as the sub and he possibly has 0% game time in the milestone match or he comes into the starting line up at someone else’s expense for some very important games for the club (even if we can’t make the finals these last 3 games will likely decide the fate of several players and coaches).

Pick your poison. For me the club always has to come first, so he shouldn’t play again until we are out of finals contention regardless of whether that means he ends up on 298 or 300.

Clearly the club wants him to get to 300, no player has ever been left stranded on 298 and with good reason, it would be a terrible indictment on the club to do so.
Treating your longest serving player in such a manner wouldn't actually help inspire confidence in the club in the eyes of other players. Good luck when asking them for their loyalty.

People forget that footy clubs are about people and relationships, it's not like running a regular business.

I wonder how it sits with Patrick Cripps who has never played a final that they are picking a guy who is afraid of physical contact for games when every single moment in all remaining games could cost us a place in the finals…
Same goes for every other player who works their arse off and are dying to play a final in the navy blue.

This is what it boils down to, not what Murphy wants or deserves. Are we picking our best possible side to win the game? No. And that is not good enough.

I wonder how the team will feel when they look back and see how pathetic we played against North, against a depleted Eagles, how we let the Bulldogs kick 8 goals to our 1.

Maybe you’re right and the players will look to blame Murphy for missing out on making finals.....it’s easier than taking accountability for their own piss weak efforts in the above 3 losses Cripps included.
