Not a whole lot new here either and I'm not surprised Richardson states:

"We think it's healthy - we want the pressure," Richardson, a former Essendon and Collingwood assistant, said of Swann's comments.
"When you are at one of the massive clubs, there are massive expectations".

He's not in the gun for poor performances but he is in 'the box seat' if Ratts gets the kybosh.

I'm not reading that article, but to answer the question in the thread title, I think it's a bit of yes and no. On one hand, he needs SOME pressure to keep him on his toes and busting his ass, but on the other hand, putting too much pressure on him could negatively impact his ability to coach us as well as he can. So basically, a healthy amount of pressure/expectation is good, but you don't want to go overboard and hold a gun to your coaches head for a whole season.

he will be under pressure regardless. Does he need to have pressure to perform at his best? Well depends. If he has the game plan and cannot deliver it is either we have poor players, the wrong plan or he cannot get his message across.
It is time to find out which.

The cinderella story of the Post-Pagan/Judd recruiting years are over. Since 2002 we have been abysmal in comparison to the illustirous history our club once basked in.

Everyone should be on notice; whether they be players, support staff, or the senior coach.

It's time to shape up or ship out. Carlton supporters don't, and never should, accept second best.

Good post jono :thumbsu:

Also agree with zee, turn up the heat, even if it is an inferno.

There has to be pressure there and there is some urgency to it.

Whether we win a flag or not in this cycle, we at least need to be playing the type of football that has people talking of us as a genuine flag thread, and while Judd is still playing. Any less and we have underachieved.

But two days ago you said our pre-season was in tatters you absolute hack journalists :o

Correct Sin, it contradicts the previous article "Bad bout of the Blues"in the HUN on the weekend...I mean make up your mind

Also, yes pressure to perform should be on everyone, turn up the heat I say, I read in the age this morning the AFL have banned betting agencies fielding a market on the first coach to be sacked, a good think I reckon

Ratts doesn't need the pressure, but it will always be there and he needs to be able to handle it. Personally I don't think it will affect him too much.

Pressure isn't a bad thing.

Each and every coach and player of the 17 clubs should be under pressure to perform.

Ratten has been under pressure since the minute he got the job & that will not change. It might magnify and intensivy with a string of poor performances, but it has always been there.

How he, any other coach, or any player handles and responds to the pressure is what usually determines their longevity in the game.

Pressure to perform is an excellent thing, but one that is certainly not exclusive to Ratten. And it's definitely not something that hasn't been applied to Ratten or the players already - it is ever present.

I'm hoping that they all do realize that the pressure is well and truly on them to perform in 2011. But that it no way means that it hasn't been there all along.

Furthermore to the General's point...

Some people thrive on pressure and I suspect Ratt's is one of those.. the comments made could be a wel timed set of comments made by Swan and Co. to be able to get the best out of Ratten and of the group.

Set the whole place's mindset right prior to the season... we are on a mission!

And remember the scrutiny Bomber Thompson was under with that review and what came of it.

Not really the right question to pose. A better one would be 'Can Ratten handle the pressure?'.

He would obviously know where he stands in terms of expectation, it's more a matter of being able to deal with the scrutiny and keep plugging away to get the result that'll see him get an extension.

Well, Swann and co. have made it quite clear that anything less than a win in the 1st week of the finals will be considered a fail so that leaves them very little room to compromise at seasons end. It either happens and Ratts stays or it don’t and Ratts goes.

Cant see what excuses they would have available to deviate from this stance(blaming injuries, etc)

Not sure why they would need to make a rod for their backs so early in the year! :thumbsd:

Sure internally set those standards but externally simply say all positions will be assessed on their merits, or reviewed at an appropriate time or any other poker faced, give-nothing-away response but dont make benchmarks public!

If things are going bad and it looks like we might be missing finals well before the seasons out, just imagine the media circus that will set up camp at PP!!!
