Society/Culture Does the Australian flag have an image problem?

The current flag has an image problem to those who view it as an image problem.

I'd imagine those who view it as a problem are highly likely to be a minority.

Same as dimwitted 'bogans', definitely a minority.

I feel for those that view our current flag as offensive, it's not meant to be offensive. Probs a good thing those with an axe to grind about it are a minority.

Fun facts:

We have had 4 plebiscites.

1. Conscription (1916).... was rejected.
2. Commit more armed forces to WW1 (1917)... was rejected.
3. National anthem (1977) ....we chose Advance Australia Fair.
4. Change the Marriage Act (2017) ....was accepted.

IMO (1) and (2) can be taken as rejections of our flag, insofar as even back 100 years ago Australians weren't too keen on the idea of being led around by the nose by the British.

Yeah but is the current flag necessary?

I think not.

Yeah but is the current flag necessary?

I think not.

Is any flag necessary?

Flags identify a nation, a club, whatever.

Is having nations, clubs, whatever necessary?

As far as clubs go, the immediate thought is your club and mine, the flag / emblems identifies them. Are those clubs necessary and by further extension the competition they're in?

This is a very open ended question you have Ghosty.

Our current flag identifies us as what and who we are as a nation, to the disdain of minorities - changing the flag will not change who we are as a nation and our history. Similarly changing the flag will be to a dislike of other minorities

One can like it or lump whatever the flag is now or whatever it will be in the future. I pity those that spend energy being p155ed off at what either represent.

What's the point of life anyway.

I think it's a false flag installed by the English bureaucracy.

You can tell by the union jack they superimposed over the top.

Yes that's obvious that the english did that, it happened, if you change the flag to rid it of the union jack it will not change what happened.

Then you'll have minorities not happy that the union jack is removed, and other minorities appeased.

Still doesn't change history of our nation, even if as a nation we have a referendum to delete records of history, it still happened.

You can boil it down and dissect it anyway you wish, it still happened.

Then what?

Who said it’s offensive?

Changing the flag is not about history.

It's about the future.

Well it's not just about the future, any flag is an identity, represents past, present and future.

Whatever flag is the future, if indeed there is, will not change history.

Whether or not that is palatable to some or many will not change history. Changing history is not possible, trying to delete or sticking your fingers in yours trying to drown it out is futile.

Accepting history and learning from it is much more productive.

Surely you'd have to agree with that.

When I look at the sort of people who wrap themselves in our flag I honestly don't see a lot to be proud of, cookers, Pauline Hanson, Christian Nationalists, Morrison and his face mask, the Australia/ANZAC day flag as a cape crowd. These people certainly don't represent the best of us and yet they seem to have co-opted our national symbol as their own leading some people to be a touch reticent in displaying it lest they be lumped in with these type of people. Does our flag have an image problem?
Yes but its universal and unsolvable.

Bolsonaro in Brazil told his supporters to go to the polls wearing Brazil's colors. Oponants deliberately avoided such colours so as not to be associated.

Here in America the absolute worst people deck their cars out in US flags and I'm automatically a little wary of anyone who flys the flag out the front of their home.

Nationalists are by definition drawn towards the flag. And go way over oars with it, making everyone else step back a bit, even if they have patriotic leanings.

You can't fix it. Change the flag and they'll do it with that one too.

I find it hard to imagine myself being inclined to do so, but if I wanted to display my love for Australia I would sooner opt for the boxing kangaroo flag than the official but nonetheless weird one that has Britan in the corner that's usually found draping some weirdo.
