I knew Darcy wouldn't set the world on fire. Second up, stats or physics are often against you.

Five goals still a solid return.

He should lift from here. A bag of ten not too far away you'd imagine.

Jeez you’re a harsh critic
Let's be honest, he was better first up last week than he was today.

He was very sore last Friday morning so it was half expected he wasn't going to dominate the way we've come to expect.

It's very exciting that Darcy at 70% fitness is still extremely bloody good.

I'm fully aware he kicked five goals. I'm also fully aware that he played Richmond and five goals going forward will be an average performance for him.

I don't think you realise just how freakishly good he is. An absolute game changer.

You'll realise in 12 months time that I'm correct.

Finally home and I'm exhausted. Wasn't that exciting of a match, but again it was only Richmond. Caught up with Jenny (of Pat and Jenny)from the Bulldogs documentary. Also caught up with the journalist who wrote the articles in the H/S beginning in 2002 and gave me my 15 minutes of fame that lasted eight years.

The friend that I was with did a crossword and read a book during the game since she has absolutely no interest in footy. (She did not ask any questions, unlike two years ago.)She did comment that Rory Lobb seemed to have a few marks and she even noticed Darcy kick goals. I told her all about the players whose fathers had played for the club and who made me feel rightfully old. I took for granted going to games every week for 25 years. Now I treasure the ones I'm able to see(even though the game against West Coast two years ago was... ).

We plan on going to the game against Adelaide next month. I am indeed grateful to have friends who drive a total of 160km and push me in my chair just so I can see the Doggies.

I am glad you had a good day Chicago - you are our lucky charm mate.

Watching Sam Darcy play 🏉 is like watching a grade 6er taking speccies over a grade 4 at lunchtime kick to kick

Sam is a beast!

Wasn't the best we've played, but nice to get the win and a big one at that. Was great seeing the Bont back to his best.

Wasn't exactly thrilled with some of our defending at times. Too much is left to Lobb and we failed to help him out going 3rd man up a few times. Dale forgot he had an opponent at times. Bramble is Bramble. Coffield looked good at times, but could have been a bit better with his disposal a couple times. We really need to start to get this area of the ground functioning better or we won't be anywhere near a premiership.

Good win, did what we needed to & also had patches where we had things we can work on. Felt the Tigers played well. Big game next week & the only game I’ll get to next year, so hoping it’s not our regular let down match.

I feel some underestimate how good and reliable Lobb has been this season. In discussions of AA selection from what I’ve heard.

With Jones struggling to find form things could be a lot worse without Lobb

Sadly Naughton, and VDM, were copping an absolute pasting from a couple of 'supporters' in our area.
That’s shithouse. Naughts and VDM were trying hard all day. Things didn’t go their way but they didn’t drop their heads. Poor Naughts got burnt a couple of times too. Supporters near me were good to all the players.

Me too Chic , so glad it was a look at the next great one in S.Darcy.
Plus the greatest bulldog M.Bontempelli.

I think you've nailed where our season is at. Fixing our defensive fragility (and our propensity to leak goals in a big way from turnovers) is central to any aspirations we have of winning a flag.

I'd go so far as to say that if Lobb got a LTI right now we might as well start preparing for 2026. He is THE irreplaceable player in our side at the moment. I'd even argue that Darcy is more replaceable than Lobb, while acknowledging that nobody can replicate exactly what Darcy is and does.

This vulnerability is why we have been dabbling so much with defenders in selections and drafts - Sellwood, Walker, Baker, Bramble, Cleary, Jaques, Coffield, Busslinger, LJones, Gardner. And positionally with players like Williams, Freijah, Khamis and even Libba and Treloar have been given a turn down back.

Johannisen still appears a walk-up start for a defensive role. I presume he is straight in next week. I think he's actually a more natural small-medium defender than Dale, who I view as mainly an attacking player (and one of the best in the AFL at it). O'Donnell has been settling nicely into the other KPD role so it was most disturbing to hear he may have been injured again today.

Tactically I'm still not sold on how we implement the high press. We get away with it against weaker sides and it pays off with thumping wins. But quite often it comes unstuck against the top 8 sides.

I think we need to have two distinct strategies. One is the usual high press. The other is a slight variation that provides some protection against the swift break. We would go in with the latter strategy against the better sides, and should also be able to switch between strategies mid-game if required. I don't get to see enough live games to know how this would look but it could for instance mean that we don't press quite as far, or perhaps somebody plays the role of sweeper. That would have to be somebody who can play tall but is still reasonably mobile like Busslinger (?) or preferably a shorter, faster version like Jaques, Sellwood or Walker when they are ready to step up.
