blues dogs game..... seating attendants or pseudo security people are walking up and down the aisles looking for misbehaving little boys shouting and swearing....

so the question for the AFL is, are there more people not going to AFL games because of the swearing, than the swearers who will stop going to games. I'm sure that the AFL has done the numbers...

Returning from the Gold Coast today, I'm on the same flight as Mayne. Did the senior players get a week off?
They did. Some are in Bali, others in QLD, etc. Lots of posts on Twitter and Instagram popping up.

i was having breakfast and wasted some time watching some baseball on kayo. People often want change in AFL because of trends that they see in other sports.......i have a few thoughts.

1. More goals means more happy fans. Have they ever watched a baseball game? Baseball gets a lot of people going to games and there's a lot of modern day people who arent concerned with the big bash approach to sport. There are more important things than scoring.

2. Advertising doesnt take precedence over tradition. Baseball doesnt sell advertising on their shirts. I'm not sure if the shirts stay the same from year to year but they dont plug sports drinks etc on something so iconic. Therre is also no advertising on the grass - at least I've never seen it. It means that a game looks much like it did 100 years ago. I think that's important.

3. The umpire is still king. The broadcaster has a strike box imposed on the screen, so that you can see if the pitch is a strike. I saw a pitch that obviously wasnt. The commentators didnt even bother to comment on it. They accepted the decision. In a later on, they casually referred to a pitch that the box said was a strike but the umpire said otherwise. They said that the pitcher thought it was a strike. No shrieks. No tantrums. No Gerald Whateley saying that the world is going to end.

4. Fat guys can play sport. Baseball really demonstrates this.

American sports popularity can change from city to city but i think its widely regarded that Baseball has gone from the national pastime to 3rd on the list of favourite sports behind NFL and NBA. Maybe 4th if you count college sports. They are having the same problems as cricket is here. game is taking too long with games going from an average of 2 hours 45 to up to 4 hours and its too slow for the youngsters.
As for the commentators ignoring a bad call.. my god i wish they did that here. first of we don't have commentators that know the rules, then they try and make a big deal out of call that is generally correct. This sends the viewers in uproar and we have to listen to diatribe about the "worst umpires ever" every single week.

Now that i have gone off on a tangent i reckon the AFL should come out every Thursday and explain any new interpretations to EVERYONE including the fans. It should be an AFL directive that there is a umpires representative in the commentary booth and only he/she should comment on a bad or good decision. And FFS employ someone who actually makes the effort to know the rules to commentate.

Good article, but this did make me chuckle:

MANY non-indigenous Australians have heard the terms such as the 'brotherhood' expressed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players.

It's not something we have plucked out of the air.

The term 'brotherhood' (not talking about the concept) hasn't been plucked out of the air, it's been plucked from Black American culture, which plucked it from the trade union and communist movements, which plucked it from ...

My point is that the commercialisation of a sport and the refining of its rules to meet the 2 year old mentality of the current generation is NOT always the way to go. Baseball has taken another strategy ( only to a limited degree because baseball owners still want to make money). It has done this by being respectful of the past - test cricket has done this to some degree. However cricket has sold out it's highlights package to establish 20 over cricket. It has catered for the impatient 2 year old in the modern fan who cant wait for the tense final hours of a 5 day test.

In the end, baseball might lose the current generation and slowly drift into irrelevance, or be forced to undergo a massive structural change. Cricket might become increasingly popular as more fans are attracted to more and more irrelevant games filled with endless variations of big bashes. Or the hipsters might move on to another past-time that will tickle them for a few minutes.

The point that I was making on the commercialisation is that there isn't just one way - even in America.

As for selling off every piece of sports real estate and clothing to big business, I have to admit that I laugh at the Premier League shirts which supposedly represent manchester united etc but which are covered by the name of a multinational. I just wonder why we just dont reorganise these so-called teams into corporate battles between Nike and Adidas. I mean, isn't that where the real action is? The game is just a sidelight on the weekend. To those from the current generation who have tied themselves to teams named after english towns and suburbs but owned by russian oligarchs, I'll would say to you that it's a very small step for your children to be cheering for Nike and Adidas. In fact, I've seen people line up to worship on the altar of Apple so we're nearly there.

There's some irony in Joffa saying that he feels that the people are losing the game. The game was lost years ago.

Given the discussion on Stephenson and dumb things, I am well and truly over 19 and last Friday driving home from visiting friends, decided to stop at an ATM as I was going shopping on Saturday.

Put my card in, pressed my pin number, selected amount of $550.00 and drove away without collecting the money. I only realised that I didn't get the money after about 5-7 minutes. Drove back to see if money was still there - nothing. Still took more money out as I need it and also to check whether the ATM was working. It was.

I felt sick all week-end and was telling a friend about it Sunday night. She suggested I go to the bank as they have CCTV so I could report to police. Thought it was a bit of a longshot, so really didn't think much about it but on Monday I was in the area and decided to check it out and after giving my card and licence over (not sure why they needed licence), the teller checked and said they would deposit the money in my account on Thursday.

I have no idea how or why this happened but it seems they were over that amount in the ATM I went to. He didn't explain anything to me and I wasn't going to question, just happy that I didn't lose it.

So even older people can do dumb things.

If money isn’t collected it can depending on how it’s given from the machine get taken back into the machine.

The machine should trigger a signalling noise to collect the money.
My guess after the signalling if the money wasn’t touched it would suck back in.

But that’s my guess.

Though I’d think the machine would cancel the transaction and reverse said account.
Though once the money passes a certain sensor it is counted as leaving the machine and transaction completed.

Well done, no loss to you.

Yeah that was my thought that if not touched after a certain time, machine sucked it back in. Then I thought nah, science fiction.

Just glad I sort of listened to my friend otherwise wouldn't have done anything about it.
