WOW!! 1st impressions? This game is scaring the ****ing crap out of me!!! Dim the lights, let the 5.1 surround sound goodness take hold and DAMN!! Had to stop after 30 mins, or else i'd end up in the cardiac ward.

Bah. It will never beat games like Morrowwind, Heroes III and IV StarCraft, Diablo II, Wing Commander (all of them), Civ II and III and MoO II.
Don't care how good the graphics are in Doom III. I want a game that you can play time and time again. FPS do not have that replay value like the games I had mentioned.

Yep, I got fed up and got an Xbox... $300 with Halo. Great graphics, Xbox live is awesome, fantastic games, and not continually having to upgrade hardware.
I usually hire games from the video store for a weekend and if I really like them I buy them (ie Rainbox Six 3, Halo, Splinter Cell PT). So many games look great but either the gameplay is poor or they are over before they started.

And Doom III may not have replay value in itself, but the fan modifications certainly will.
I'm not a big FPS fan, but seriously, try to think before you talk.

Whether or not games have been ripped off from others has nothing to do with replay value. And MoO II is sort of like Civ, except you try and take over an entire galaxy and have fleets of ships instead of riflemen. Same principles, different genre. However, strategey games have a much higher replay value than FPS. I'll include RPGs too, including Ultima Online.
Most games are. That's irrelevant to replay value though.
Morrowind is better. However, Diablo II's replay value comes from finding better items, and leveling up. This look sawy of me for a while but I'm not playing it anymore.
Most RPG games and strategy games have their own mods.
Is this directed at me or Pablo? Whether or not games are variations of others has got nothing to do with their replay value. There is not much variety in FPS games (that is, in playing it), not on the same level as RPGs and games like StarCraft. There are mods, but we're just talking about the actual game in full. That's because these games have more features, more interactions.

I'm not an RPG fan either, but at least they require a tad of brainpower to complete.
Bloody computing. You buy yourself what you consider to be a great system, and a year later you're badly wanting to upgrade! I've got a P4 2.4GHz (800MHz FSB but crappy P4PE mobo), 512 MB DDR400 RAM with a GeForce 4 Ti 4800SE. It's been great for SCPT, Max Payne 2, XIII, etc, and will play Doom 3 but it's not going to be long before the games' requirements outstrip it.
I s'pose that's the nature of the beast though. Hoping to get Doom 3 next week, I wanna be scared!

Entire post was directed at Pablo, Thrawn. The replay value of those games (other than Diablo II) is undisputed and excellent, although I still challenge you to find any game with more replay value than NWN - fan created custom content for that game is very very impressive, and multiplayer adds a lot.
As Abaddon said, the FPS replay value is entirely in the multiplayer - and fan mods, which are almost always massively more impressive than the RPG or strategy mods (with the exceptions of NWN, Morrowind, Dungeon Siege and Warlords III).
When you say RPGs and strategy games have much more replay value than FPS, what I see is personal preference, not truth.
Incidentally, on the 'FPS fan mods are just basic variations on the same thing' - check these out - I'm not saying any of these are good, because I haven't played most of them - as I said, not a big FPS fan.
Quake Rally - a racing game, which is a Quake 3 mod.
Bid For Power - a Dragonball-like game, again a Quake 3 mod.
Alien Swarm - turns Unreal Tournament 2004 into an overhead-view squad-based tactical shooter.
Deathball - A sports game, UT2004 mod.
What I'm saying is that just because YOU don't like a particular genre, does not mean that it is stupid, mindless, one-dimensional, or any other epithet suggesting that it doesn't require intelligence.

True surround sound is doable on the PC, as is big screen, as is 'the dark'.
And you'll have to upgrade your Xbox in a couple of years when the one you have becomes a paperweight.
Also, have you ever tried to run Photoshop on an Xbox? Just doesn't work too well.
Nah, I hear what you're saying, but I can't stand playing FPS games with a keypad -- mouse and keyboard is the way to go, it's a far superior set-up IMO.
Playing sports sims like soccer and driving games, well that's a completely different story.

Please find somewhere where I said mods were basic variations on the same thing. I was referring to the games themselves. The concept is the same throughout - shoot stuff and get better weapons. The only advancement in this time has been interacting with other elements in the environment, i.e. vehicles.
As for the online element, jump on a normal server, and then count all the people using cheats/hacks. Great replay value there. FPS' are nothing but mindless entertainment for the lemmings. Hopefully by the time Half Life 2 comes out, many of these lemmings will grow tired of playing the same game over and over and try something different.
Want to explain to me why games like the Championship Manager series are so popular across the world? I'll tell you why, because it's everything an FPS isn't.

What the heck, PC is the FPS God.
try to get yourself a nostromo n45 or belkin type joystick i picked one up for 25 bucks and it has more programmable buttons than you can think of also available the gaming mouse and glove.
