Alan Mangels perhaps. He can play on behalf of Chitty, who he was related to.
Here’s a little known fact. Alan Mangels and myself clashed as opposing skippers when Oak Park Primary School took on Glenroy Primary School in 1968.

Also, Ricky McLean, mad as a cut snake.

Southby was scared to play on him in intra club games.

Also, Paul McCormack had a reputation among the playing group as being a bit of a mad bastard at training, would run through blokes. He got suspended in his very first senior game.

This would have been bigger than the lame derbies & showdowns in SA & WA.

Might be too early for the list.

But ask any of the old blokes around the club about Bruce 'Bugsy' Comben.

The stories make your toes curl. He was an individual.

While we're on the topic on teams, I decided to try my hand in making the worst 22:

B: O'Reilly Livingston O'Shea
HB: Sporn Prendergast Mansfield
C: Athorn Fletcher Powell
HF: Vance Cloke Culpitt
F: Kenna Mott D. Gallagher
R: Ackland Chambers Cranage

Int: Deluca Clarke Jnr Nelson Joseph
Coach: Denis Pagan

Yep- Fremantle won that trade for O’Reilly.

Think you are a bit harsh on some. Would swap out Joseph for Blaine boekhurst. Also, surely room for josh bootsma?

Criteria.... most disliked? Most annoying? There are a few Blues who tried hard and managed over 50 games for us versus some Blues that were disasters the day they were announced eg Ackland.

What’s the thinking?

Cant get behind some of these being in the worst 22. Livingston was killed by the club, played out of position, and at full back during a time when the entire team was pretty much rubbish. And certainly doesnt deserve selection ahead of the likes of Michael Martyn whos performance at Carlton was somewhat less than stellar.

Prendergast i remember as being quite handy in his 65 games for the club.

Fletcher doesnt deserve to be in a list of the worst 22. Not by a long shot. And Mark Athorn? come on man. I though Nelson was serviceable and a times unlucky. Joseph has no business being on this list. And none of these would be worse than say Daniel Harfords 2 game career with the Blues in 2004. or Karl Norman.

Im not even sure Cameron Cloke belongs on this list. Certainly not when Laurence Angwin doesnt get a mention.

Also some recency bias perhaps. Club records show 470 players who didnt even play 10 games for the club.

Barnaby French shouldn't be there either, he wasn't Big Nick but he certainly wasn't Cain Ackland either

I mentioned this in another thread at the start of the year but thought I would rehash it here.

I was in Melbourne for work back in late Feb this year when we played St Kilda in the JLT. I was also lucky enough to do the Ghosts of Princes Park tour (highly recommended). On my tour there was a older gentleman who looked late 80's maybe early 90's but was still moving well and sharp as tack. As we were walking around the ground, Tony De Belfo started talking about 1945 bloodbath GF which was held at Princes Park due to the War.

The old fella put his hand up and said he was there and started rattling off some great stories about where he sat, how 60k+ were able to fit in that day and as he was only a young guy at the time, the atmosphere in the crowd was amazing if not a little scary with what was happening on the field.

He then told a story about the 47 GF which was back at the G and how he got to the ground late and was told that the gates are closed as the ground is full even though there was a big crowd still outside. He said the police ended up opening the gates and people ended up setting inside the boundary line and he was one of the lucky ones.

Would have loved for the Club to sit down with this gent and get some of his memories on tape.

Can confirm the 1947 recollection as my mum sat between the fence and the boundary line due to the crowd. She was with child and that child now barracks for North Melbourne (boo!!!!).

Fred Stafford Snr kicked the winning goal that day to grab the victory by 1 point. Years later Fred and my father became drinking buddies at the Union Hotel in Carlton. I met the man on a few occasions. I was also privileged to play in sides with his son Fred in U15s and U17s with Carlton Colts. We also shared a few games together playing for the Carlton U19s in 1975.

He is a good man The Beast and does a lot of good work on the history of the club. My dear Uncle passed away a few years back and was a life member of the club. Tony De Bolfo did a really nice article about him on the website covering off on his time at the club.
