McCluggage, Brodie, Scharenberg, Clarke, Florent, Venables, Taranto, McGrath, Petrevksi-Seton...
All sound like good options! How are you ranking them after today?

Still think we could get a good one at our pick?

Given that i reckon Gaff would cost our first this year and then probably our 2nd next year (or at least our 3rd), it would be an interesting decision as to what would be better out of Gaff, or a Brodie/SPS/Ainsworth/Venebles/McCluggage/McGrath this year, whoever we'd get with our 2nd or 3rd next year, plus the salary cap saving.

The big thing that would play a part in that decision will be whether GWS (via Collingwood, if they finish below us) and Gold Coast keep their picks before ours and have to use them on academy selections. If they do, then our pick 8 for instance could essentially become pick 6, but we won't know that until after the trade period ends, which makes it so much more of a dilemma, as we'd need to make a decision on how hard to go for a Gaff well before that!

Seems to me that most of the rankings from draft specialists I've seen so far have really overrated the academy kids?
Sanderson kept on raving about Bowes and they also really spoke highly of Mutch and I think it was Perryman, but I do wonder if they might have overrated McCredie.

Knightmare (remembering he's a dick) had 4 of the top 5 players as academies and the 5th was Marshall, I just can't see how.

I'm really not seeing it with Marshall in these two games I've seen him play in the last week. Very skinny and hasn't done a lot. If we keep our first and he goes before our pick I'll be very happy (unless we want him for the forward/ruck role).

I've only seen his first game and a bit of the last. He hasn't been dominant but I think he's shown some really good signs, great set of hands and good off the deck. He will put on size. No way would we be interested but it would be great if he did get picked up before us.

I'm starting to really like Ainsworth, would love to see him spend a even more time in the middle, could really be another Robbie Gray.

Yeah you can see why there was talk in the past about Ainsworth potentially going no.1 in this draft and talk as recently as a week or so ago that he could go top 3. He's just bloody good.

They spoke to whoever heads up Brisbane's recruiting team during the telecast today and he said they were happy with the tall talent they have and that they'd be looking at "mids and small forwards" this year with their first, so it wouldn't surprise me if they were one club that were really into him. They have a good midfield but could do with some more goalkicking power up forward and in particular at the feet of Schache and co. Richmond another.

Robbie gray is 183cm. Aintworthit will never be gray. His more lecras if anything.
Didn't Barrells say he's heard Ainsworth is now 180cm? If so, and Gray is indeed only 183cm, then there is bugger-all difference there as far as I'm concerned, especially as Ainsworth is so damn strong and plays so much taller than 180cm, due to being so good in the air and having a good leap. If Gray was around 190cm, like Fyfe, then fair enough, but he's no-where near it.

Ablett is listed at just 182cm, while Sam Mitchell is listed at just 179cm, while someone like Lachie Neale is listed at just 176cm and Dion Prestia 175cm, so I think it's a non-issue as far as him being able to play in the midfield is concerned. The only query I would have is on his tank (which they said is his issue during the telecast), if what I saw of him in the midfield today is anything to go by (when it comes to whether he knows how/has the ability to play midfield or not).

Le Cras and Gray are the same size.

Aisnworth is 179 so I don't see how his size will be an issue playing through the midfield.

That was my point, if we are comparing him to a 183cm player imo it would be lecras.

Gray can be a full time or part time mid. Aintworthit would only be part time at best.

Well I disagree, I can't see why he can't spend more time in the midfield.

I think we'll see him spend more and more time there as the year goes on.

They said his tank is the issue, hence spending most of his time forward at this point. He is so well developed in the upper body in particular that he looks to me like someone who spends most of his time in the gym, but who now needs to just put on his running shoes and hit the pavement.

Looked 100% at home to me when playing in the guts or when in contested/congested situations though, so I'd be very keen to see how he'd go if he spent more time there as the year went on.

Would probably be gone by our pick if he does have a strong finish to the year and a lot of it is in the midfield though. Could be like Petracca, who likewise went into his draft year with really good form up forward, but questionmarks on his midfield game and tank.

Well then he must be the one - its preordained - blah blah blah blah!!!! ;-)

Although to be serious it would be nice - great for retention purposes too :)
Worked with Tommy Lynch.

Liked the look of McGrath and definitely see him as being the type we'd really love to get on our list, thanks to his speed and willingness to use it, in particular. Played down back, on the wing and in the guts and seemed to do well in all those roles, which is a great sign. Will be really interesting to see where he goes.

That's fair enough, I'm just going off what iv seen and heard from some of his former coaches.

I think if aintworthit goes in the top 7 it says more about the top 7 then him.

Great athlete to which is handy. Like barrels said the only concern is if he can become a mid at the top level

We also need to find a replacement for Joey long term and to add more linebreaking speed and if he ended up as good as say Johannisen then I wouldn't have much of an issue with spending a pick like 8 on someone like that. It's such an important role these days and you can see how much WB have dropped off since they lost the likes of JJ and Murphy and their run off HB.

But what are you basing that opinion on?
Do you care to elaborate, or is it a secret?

I'm basing it off from what I see mainly, like what we all do.

He played mid as a jnr for morwell, I coached against him a couple of times and put a tag on him and he was held.

His x development coach said he wont become a full time mid because he has a attaching mind set and defending doesn't come natural to him. He said to get the best out of him you'd keave him forward and let him snag his 2 goals a week.

Don't get me wrong he's going to a great small fwd but I think we already have some good ones.
