List Mgmt. Draft Discussion 2016

This is going to sound ridiculous but I can see Will Brodie being the new Mathieson of this draft. Could he just slip to our pick at 23?
Would have to be a flog you'd reckon, that's just about the only reason sliders like that happen it seems like.

Tony Elsaugh: "Will Brodie, come on down"

What strategy will the club take at the draft ?
Pick 23 Best Available talent .
Pick 36 Midfielder
Pick 61 Best of the Rest .
Do we target our list weakness.
Do we target postions in preparation for retirements.
Interested to see peoples views .
They will take highest they rate no doubt on there ranking list

If GWS lose Pick 15 and 37 as suggested, they probably would have to use pick 2 on one of their academy boys. Then if a team selected another of their academy boys GWS would use most of their remaining picks to retain him. Then the remaining GWS boys would probably be on the open market. Which would mean Zach Sproule, 197 KPF and Harrison MacReadie, 196 KPD would be available around our first pick.
They've suggested in today's HUN that they're only going to take Setterfield, Perryman and Cumming, and pass on Mutch, Sproule and MacReadie.

Only if the Academy boy is bid on before pick 2.
Otherwise they can go into hock for next year if they choose.

If we can get Drew, Mutch, Fisher, or Graham at 36 i'm happy.

If the sanctions come in.. then it is very likely that several academy players come into play, helping our pick 36 and 61... e.g. Mutch, McReadie, Sproule... either we rate them or someone else grabs them and allows us greater choice at our picks..

If GWS do go into deficit, it also may help our picks next year

Sproule looks like he has much more scope to develop as a versatile key tall.

I'd melt hard if we took Battle at 23.

Didn't realise you were talking about Cox, but my point still stands.

This draft is stuffed full of mids to choose from.
For forwards it depends whether they make it or not. They would need to be exactly what we need, not the nearest thing to it.

Yes Hugh is unproven Coughlan too. So is everyone available in the draft.
Marshall is the best of them, due to the "glimpses of talent" he has shown in the Championships. (ie he might be good ).
So far I've not seen a reputable phantom where he's still available at our pick.
Battle is a 192 cm key forward. 1cm taller than Blake Acres. He's rated as a 3rd tall at AFL level , is that what we need?
Kerr has question marks on his agility and pace.

If Marshall slides it may be because everyone else has decided he probably isn't going to make it. Should we therefore grab him? Maybe.

Battle plays like a main man KPF though, I think they are judging him on height and there are a few have him at 194 now. He's one centimetre less than Jesse Hogan at the size. Jack Darling is 191cm for example and Tim membrey is 188cm.

So I now know two players from the draft, Marshall and Pepper-Salt....

Let's get em!!

Marshall??? No way!
What a waste of 23. Shite.

This is what our recruiters will have written down. Any combination of these would be fantastic for us.
Can not believe people suggesting C GRADE DOGCRAP ...

Both cox's
Mutch
Marshall
Clarke
Graham
Fisher
If we get ANY of the above it would be a disgrace.

THIS IS THE LIST I know theyll be looking at. Elite skills, speed or agility.
All we need is one from.
Each group to slide. Highly confident in our staff to see the real talent.

From what we are hearing, I advise that you prepare to be disappointed on draft night.

You don't need a surplus of quality KPFs to win a flag. We have Bruce, McCartin, Membrey. All of them young, all of them marking forwards. If two of them are injured and we need a pinch hitter then we have four ruckmen, none are great forwards but they can be a big body if needed. Goddard can go forward, so can Carlisle, maybe Coughlan if he makes it. And you can get a backup tall forward for very little. Look at the list who changed hands for shitty picks this year: Aaron Black, James Stewart, Travis Cloke, Nathan Vardy, Shane Kersten, Jarrod Witts. Not to mention delisted players like Andrejs Everitt, Luke Lowden, Chris Dawes, John Butcher, Drew Petrie.

Down back it's Carlisle, Goddard, Brown could play a few years, Dempster one or two, presumably Coughlan is a chance. Robbo and Gilbo can pinch hit. Sure, probably one short once Brown and Dempster go. But a third tall defender doesn't have to be a superstar, he can be Joel Hamling or Matt Spangher or Jeremy Laidler or someone of that ilk. All of those guys were delisted before playing in grand finals. I have no doubt we'd be able to find one if we need in the future; this year it would be Mitch Brown or Xavier Richards or Cam O'Shea or Joel Tippett or Litherland or Schade or Ricky Henderson.

No need to spend big on talls when you already have some good ones. Spend big on mids because that's where the game is won.

I agree to a point, we need more mids but I think we can get an excellent one via FA or trade with next years draft picks. For example if Dylan Shiel or Kelly miraculously decided to head to Melbourne we could offer our two first rounders next year that we already hold. No one lets the A grade tall players go though and they are the hardest to find in the draft. We also have a good amount of mids that we need to see if they are up to standard. If we can get Acres and Dunstan etc all step it up we are going to be pretty set for now and really for all positions now it's about improving the quality.

Every year we are linked to players in the fortnight before the draft. It almost always is to players that will slide past our pick. Its not until the final week do we get a better idea but even then the player the media talk about loudest usually isnt the player we get

Thats why i dont think we get battles or marshall

Only if the Academy boy is bid on before pick 2.
Otherwise they can go into hock for next year if they choose.

Will Dorado pull the greatest draft bid ever by bidding 1 for Setterfeld, forcing GWS to use 2?
Will GWS match??

That would be a sensation and all would be forgiven for the Dil

do.

What are you hearing?

No way we would pick up any of those cgraders.

Thanks Mr. Crystal Ball, your insight on the definite outcomes of these young players' careers and our selection choices are always welcome.

Can you tell us when we're going to win our next flag while you're at it?
