Re: Draft Discussion

How come the thread on Bugatron's draft got mixed in here. I don't have a problem in general with combining threads, but Burgo generally has a bit more credibility than the average punter on Bigfooty and deserved a thread on its own. No offence to any of the posters who have posted in here, but I couldn't be bothered wading through 380 posts to see the ones discussing Burgos views.
The info from Burgatron had already been posted in here and then 2 more threads were started with the same info. Seeing as the draft discussion thread is where everyone seems to be talking about the draft, I thought it would be easier keeping everything in the one thread.

With the other threads odds are they would have reached about 20 odd posts and then people would have forgotten about them.

Re: Draft Discussion

Emma Quayles profiles on a couple of kids we're looking at:

Picks of the draft: Tyrone Vickery
Emma Quayle | November 27, 2008

FROM: The Sandringham Dragons and Haileybury College, where Vickery has played after recovering from a season-ending knee injury in early 2007. He played for Vic Metro in this year's under- 18 national championships
THE NUMBERS: Born 31 May, 1990, 200 centimetres, 89 kilograms.

THE LOWDOWN: Vickery is a ruckman, and spent much of his time out injured studying the subtleties of ruck work. But he is also a strong mark, and it's easy to envisage him becoming, at 200 centimetres and with pace, a powerful centre half-forward.

RUNNING AND JUMPING: Vickery's endurance can do with some work. But - off a knee reconstruction - he has a lot to offer athletically. His speed is a highlight - Vickery ran a 2.94-second 20-metre sprint, finishing in a hurry after running the first five metres in 1.04 seconds. His 20-metre time put him in the top 20 per cent of the kids at draft camp.

WHERE WILL HE END UP? Port Adelaide, which holds pick No. 4, has had a good look. Even Fremantle, at No. 3, had Vickery high on its list at one point. But I think he will get through to Richmond - where his father John works as a rehab and weights coach - at pick No.8.

IRRELEVANT YET INTERESTING FACT: Vickery was a big Brisbane Lions fan as a kid, and was once picked to be the club's mascot for a day and run out with the team. He still has a photo of himself with Michael Voss. He's switched to the Tigers since his dad has been working there.

IF HE WAS A BISCUIT HE'D BE: A Chocolate Royal. This is not in reference to Vickery being a marshmallow in any way. But Royals have the tough base and the puffy top - a bit like Vickery with his strong body and crazy dreadlocked hair. Oh, OK, so I'm really struggling to think of a biscuit for Tyrone Vickery...

Picks of the draft - Hamish Hartlett
Emma Quayle | November 21, 2008

FROM: West Adelaide. He's played five senior games in the past two years after arriving via his junior club, Edwardstown, and playing a lot of footy for his school, Sacred Heart. Hamish's older brother, Adam, has played eight games since he was drafted by Carlton at No. 25 in 2005.

THE NUMBERS: Born August 14, 1990; 184 centimetres; 77 kilograms.

THE LOWDOWN: A really smooth mover, in the midfield or up forward. Hartlett reads the play well, can spot things out of the corner of his eyes. He keeps his feet, can duck in and out of packs and seems to find ways to get his arms and hands clear to handball.

RUNNING AND JUMPING: After shoulder surgery in early August, Hartlett wasn't able to do much testing at the draft camp. He hasn't tested particularly fast in the past (a smidgen over three seconds for 20 metres), but you don't tend to notice that watching him play - he has great instincts and seems to pick what's going to happen just before it unfolds, and get to where the ball's going.

WHERE HE'LL END UP: There's a chance he may be on the move to Perth, with Fremantle considering him strongly. I suspect Port Adelaide may snap him up next at No. 4 (perhaps pending the availability of Daniel Rich). The next two clubs - Essendon and Carlton - will have a look, and the furthest I can see him getting is to No. 8, Richmond.

SLIGHTLY IRRELEVANT YET INTERESTING FACT: In November 2006, not long after starring in the under- 16 national championships, Hartlett fractured his left ankle - when a friend ran over his leg with his car. In fact, every injury he's had has been on the left side of his body.

IF HE WAS A BISCUIT HE'D BE: A Mint Slice. All class
.

Re: Draft Discussion

The age this morning seems to indicate that fremantle are after hill. Which could possible mean Rich to port leaing us the choice between Vickery and Hartlett. I think we really need Vickery but Hartlett is just to good to pass on.

Re: Draft Discussion

Just going through Burgans draft and here is the list of players he believes we're interested in. Starting from the first round and working down:

Hartlett
Vickery
Yarran
Hill

Hurley
Sidebottom
Blease

Roughead
McKernan
Zaharakis
Post
Shuey
Strauss

Jarrad Redden
Stanley

Bennell
Cockie
Jetta
Shiels

Cahill
McCulloch
Weadon
Hislop

Midfielder/Flanker Types
KPP's
Rucks
I believe we are also very interested in Hayden Ballantyne.A small goal sneek and current Sandover medalist.
Burgo believes he will be taken by either WA sides between pick 18-53.Will be interesting if he falls to pick 58

Re: Draft Discussion

It's becoming increasingly likely that we might have a choice between Hartlett or Vickery

If Freo take Hill, Port would take Rich, Essendon are torn between Yarran Sidebottom and Hurley, Carlton want Hurley and Brisbane I think want Ziebell!

What do we do?! I reckon we'd jump on Hartlett, but I've taken Vickery as my own in the last couple of days. Sooo confusing :p

Re: Draft Discussion

But Brisbane are undecided with a rumoured disagreement between the recruiters and the football department. Voss wants Ziebel but who do their recruiters want?

Re: Draft Discussion

Vickery and Hartlett are both rated A graders by most pundits, and I think given our need for ruckman, Vickery should get the nod. Given midfielders come on quicker than ruckman, we can always pick up another gun midfielder in a later draft and for that player to have an immediate impact. At the same time Vickery would have a few years of development in him.

I agree. Vickery would be the best outcome for us :thumbsu:

Re: Draft Discussion

my opinion has been swaying for a while, it's been for hartlett over vickery for a long time, but over the past few days, it's changed to vickery and i think it's gonna stay...hope we get him.

Re: Draft Discussion

Vickery for me now aswell.

I've been so unsure, in fact still kind of am.

Vickery is better for us then any other player that will be availalbe for us, except for i guess...Hartlett. Both Even

If we have the choice between both, i dont care which one we choose.

Vickery becasue he is a Tigers Boy and will have the heart to go with the talent.

Or Hartlett because you can never have enough class and toughness in the midfield

Welcome to Tigerland .... VICKERY (or hartlett)

Re: Draft Discussion

I looked at burgan's top-10 picks and found myself thinking I'd be happy enough for any of them to land with us, so really, our first pick is going to be a 'win' regardless ( For me, Vickery, Trengove, 'best mid left' ). edited to add Except Hurley...we have enough key backmen.

It's the later picks where things will get interesting, and so much harder to guess in advance...Will we pick up a big slider like last year ( Rance ), who filled a slot we didn't really need filled, but was just too good to pass on?

From past efforts, if we go big with our first pick, we'll go mid with the second, or vice versa....although the club has said it wants to address ruck & KF positions, and let's face it, while we can always use another quality mid, we're fairly well served there already and have already traded for a mid, so big then big isn't out of the question.

Also interesting is what they'd do with Vickery if they got him. Obvious call is as a ruckman, drifting forward, but I think he could be more value as the monster FF/CHF we've been looking for ( and push Putt into a more 'pure Ruck' role )..

Re: Draft Discussion

i cant split Vickery or Hartlett, would be happy with either one, but i think Big Vick is our man :thumbsu:

Re: Draft Discussion

Hartlett is simply too good to pass up, would love Vickory but can not see us passing on HH if he is available.
We shall see I guess

Re: Draft Discussion

From the AFL website

Since publishing my Phantom Draft at 2pm AEDT on Wednesday, it has been revealed that Fremantle will almost certainly be selecting Stephen Hill with pick No.3.

As a result, I have reordered the first 20 picks as follows:

1. Jack Watts (Melbourne)
2. Nick Naitanui (West Coast)
3. Stephen Hill (Fremantle)
4. Hamish Hartlett (Port Adelaide)
5. Daniel Rich (Essendon)
6. Michael Hurley (Carlton)
7. Chris Yarran (Brisbane Lions)
8. Tyrone Vickery (Richmond)
9. Jack Ziebell (North Melbourne)
10. Jackson Trengove (Adelaide)
11. Steele Sidebottom (Collingwood)
12. Lewis Johnston (Sydney Swans)
13. Tom Lynch (St Kilda)
14. Ayce Cordy (Western Bulldogs)
15. Ashley Smith (Geelong)
16. Sam Blease (Hawthorn)
17. Ryan Schoenmakers (Melbourne)
18. Tom Swift (West Coast)19. Dayne Beams (Melbourne)
20. Phil Davis (West Coast)

We are still listed as taking Vickery, but if Port dont take Hartlett becasue Rich is there, then everything might change.

Its getting close now fellas.....

Re: Draft Discussion

Hill not worthy of pick 3 PHX? Forgive my draft ignorance but I have really only been following Vickery, Hartlett and Trengove

Re: Draft Discussion

As long as we don't pass up Ziebell, I'll be happy.
Imagine if McKernan slipped to our 2nd rounder

Ziebell and McKernan; would be the best draft ever, or at least rival Cotchin and Rance!!!

Well Hill just might be very talented and I'm sure I haven't looked at it as much as Freo but Rich is the premier midfield option of the draft and has been for over 12 months only to be overtook in the final 3 weeks when exactly what has been going on to change the order? Not much. Just cant believe they're passing on him.

Re: Draft Discussion

I really hope Hill makes it, cos he sounds like one of the best kids in the draft personality-wise, but I can see him becoming another JON-like bolter and be a flop...
