I know we all got our hopes and dreams pined on picking up Monfries with pick 8 but I would like to throw in a hypothetical. Assume that the first 7 players selected are (not in particular order)

Deledio
Tambling
Griffen
Roughead
Franklin
Monfries
DeLuca

Pick 8 comes around, who would you choose?

Wood for me :)

I haven't really followed this years draft as closely as I did last years.

But surely Cameron Wood?

edit: I posted this before I saw the poll.

Funny how this new vbulletin will show the thread before the poll is even up...

Tell me about Wood, Stiffy.

I have spent a few minutes trying to remove the innuendo from that, but I can't, so just make sure you tell me about him in your own words.

Just out of interest, do you rate Wood??????

My one query on Wood is that he is often spoken of, even by the very best of judges, as a 3 to 4 year project player before he becomes an AFL player.

Perhaps unfairly, that marks him down somewhat in my eyes, as history shows that these long term project players don't have a good success rate.

There's little doubt that on paper Wood is the best young ruck prospect around - the doubt is whether he's worth #7, given that a mid-fielder taken at that number has a far greater chance of success.

So it's not really a question of being for or against Wood. It's just the degree of risk we take with such a good draft pick.

I voted for Eckerman, simply because I would assume that Wood would be gone by our pick, even if Monfries is taken before #8 as well.

So, I guess my full answer should be;

Monfries > Wood > Eckerman > Meyer.

I really think that Cameron Wood will go before Fabian Deluca but for sake of argument my pick eight would be :-

John Meesen

I think he will do more around the ground than Wood and as he's from Vic County unlikely to be homesick.

However, I wouldn't be unhappy if we nabbed Wood.

Either of these two ruckmen is just what the doctor ordered for the Crows. :)

Tall beanpole ruckman who has some of the best skills I have seen for a bloke his size. Athletic and already very good at actual ruckwork. He is improving in general field play. His second half of this year (after the Nationals) has been superb. He is getting more of the ball in field play and has even been resting up forward, taking marks and kicking goals.

He does need about 3-4 years in the gym to get his body really developed but as far as skills go he could play AFL in a year or 2.

If both Wood and Monfries are gone before pick 8, I would seriously consider this lad. One big bonus for me is that he is Vic Counrty lad and history would suggest that they don't get homesick that often.

One thing is for certain, we can't afford to stuff up pick 8.

... or our 1st few picks for that matter. We need to make every post a winner.

We really must draft well to get out of this mess as quickly as possible.

Slightly off topic but I found out today that Alan Stewart said that he thinks Bryce Gibbs is that good he could play on the wing at AFL level next year. Thats SCARY considering the kid is only 15.

Pity we can't recruit him until he gets to the minimum draft age though. It's about time we benefited from the F&S rule.

Special considertation can be given in some instances. (2 years early is a bit too much of a stretch but maybe 1?)

Regardless of whether Monfries is available or not, if Wood is there @8 the Crows must take him. If they dont, they are even more stupid than their recent drafting performances suggest. He is the stand out in the category (ruckman) we require desperately. An absolute must.

Wood would be the one to go with IMO.

However, AFC may have a surprise up their sleeve? Whichever way they go, we won't know whether it was the right choice for at least 18 months.

Good point. I think Wood should be taken at pick 8 if he is available. If he takes 3-4 years to physically fill out and be a class AFL ruckman then so be it. Toby Thurstans took 4 years to fill out and he played a pivotal role in the AFL grand final, so Port's patience obviously reaped big dividends. I think we should adopt a similar approach with Wood.

Having said that, I think either Hawthorn or the Bulldogs will take him before us :(

In answer to the question - IMO the priorities for pick 8 should be :

Wood > Monfries > Eckermann > Meyer

I said Eckermann. I know we need a ruckman but we sure as hell need a pacy midfielder too. Eckers is a class act and would be ready for senior footy b4 Wood I would think. Toughie tho....almost said someone else, like Lewis. That kid is a gun player, may not be quick but sure as hell is tough.
