If you have seen Central Districts play this year, you will know that Ian Callinan is a GUN. Has some speed and is awesome around goals.

His class was once again on display in the SANFL Grand Final.

He would be a perfect fit for the Crows. Is similar in height to Matthew Bode and would play a similar role - and be better at it!

Please draft him!!

No thanks, pretty sure he is 24. Would be the smallest player in the league if we did, plus would get found out by pace. Bode is a better player than him.

At a guess, 21 or 22. Not that old and only needs an opportunity to show he is up to it.

Given the odds of drafting dud 18 year olds, i am not against drafting guys of that age who are proven at the 2nd best level AS LONG AS the club is also willing to ditch those 25+ year olds who are nothing more than average (while of course going for the best 18yo players with first couple picks of course). This principle is even more appealing when dealing with talls. So many 18yo end up as duds so dont waste high picks on them unless a very high chance of success (hopefully Sellar in this category). Otherwise, use a later pick or even better wait a year or two and pick up a more proven tall which other clubs may overlook cos they are not 18 anymore.

If Callinan 21ish and no other small forwards who are very likely to 'make it' when our 2nd+ picks come up then go for it! My only other question on him is his speed...what is the consensus. I wonder whether his footy brain hides any lack of pace? That's all good, except when chasing the rebounding defenders.

Does anyone else want to add another good older SANFL player to the list of players we should draft

Here's a thought..... draft a good kid that after some development turns into a gun. I know it's a bit out there but who knows you might actually be able to get a goodun that turns into a 200+ gamer.

OK, 24 is still young enough to get plenty of good footy from him.

Nick Gill is the same age and Callinan will work nicely with him in the forward lines. At least you could count one of them to kick the ball through the middle of the goals!

He just needs an opportunity.

he's also a midfielder who knows where the goals are. could do a lot worse.;

Was amazed he was never rookied by an AFL club or drafted in 2000 as he has so much class but his size was always the problem.

However he is now 24, his time has passed. He will be remembered as a great State footballer.

Reminds me a bit of how Josh Mahoney has played over the past few years. Bit slow but good mark, good goal sense and wins the hard ball.

I think hes one of those players though that is a genuine footballer rather than an athlete and therefore wont get a chance/may not succeed in the ultra athletic AFL world. Same as Jeremy Clayton, Scott Borlace, James Allan to name three.

Better player than Mahoney, this bloke is too good for the SANFL. Don't tell me that blokes like Jericho and Hinge and Doughty are better players because they aren't. I'd draft him in a heartbeat with a late pick, or use him on the mature age rookie. Very good player, smart arond goals, strong overhead, goalkicking midfielder, strong body despite lack of height. Half the Centrals side could play AFL.

Mature age rookie sounds reasonable depending on what else is out there.

As long as the club begins to turnover mid 20+ average players with a little more severity (i.e. Doughty!), there will be space on the list for possibly better, 20-24yo blokes (i.e. Gill, ?Campbell, ?Callinan) who could still play for 6+ more years without ending up with a list of 30+ year olds.

As long as it's a very low pick or rookie pick then great. I believe that being that old they do not have to have a 2 year contract. Therefore what is there to lose? I mean, another thread has shown that even 2nd round picks are useless more often than not, so why not use a 4th/5th pick (much like we did for Gill, Campbell) on a Callinan type. It shouldn't take as long to assess whether they are gonna make the jump in standard. Benefit > Risk if the right player is available.

Looked composed in the Grand Final and he seems like a fairly reliable kick for goal (something that the Crows could definitely use). Surely worth a spot over some of the 26-29y.o. players. Perhaps worth a PSD pick.

I'd say he'd be worth a late draft pick if he nominated.

Another thing against Callinan though is he plays for Centrals, and Adelaide have always been reluctant to recruit Centrals players for some reason.

Yeah why is that?

I am biased as I am a Dogs man, but I would've thought they would be seen as a proven club for developing young talent and teaching them how to be ruthless about their footy.

Callinan is hard, skillfull and quite deadly infront of the sticks...worth some serious thought IMO.
