that I was right. A lot of people said they liked watching it. What about the Fox footy channel? Not interested or not up yet?

Not up yet, and they'll only have replay rights. Apparently this draft was meant to be Channel Seven's to show, but they dropped it early.
I disagree Roylion. I think if anyone is to be blamed it's the AFL. they are the 'custodians of the game' and the ones responsible for dealing with the TV rights issues. It is their responsibility to ensure telecasts of events like the draft are available for fans.Originally posted by Roylion
The Channel Nine/Ten consortium must telecast the Draft from 2002-2006 under the terms of the Broadcast Agreement.
If anyone is to be blamed it is Channel 7.

Dear Editor,
The 2002 AFL season hasn't started yet and already I, along with many other loyal footy fans, are beginning to question the wisdom of handing the broadcast rights over to the new consortium. First we had a sloppy performance by Channel 9 during the International Rules series. Then we had a fixture determined more by TV ratings than equality for the 16 teams, and now we have the latest decision that means the National Draft will not be telecast by any of the networks.
This decision is a disgrace and flies in the face of the promised greater promotion of the national game. Sure, the AFL draft may not be the most riveting viewing, but none the less it is a crucial part of the season, and many fans tune in every year to see who will be the future champions of their clubs. Even worse, hundreds of nervous young stars will be forced to wait for a phone call or an update on the internet before finding out what their fate is, and whether they will be spending their next two or three years interstate.
It should have been obvious during negotiations that Channel 7 would never show the National Draft, why didn't the AFL include it in the new deal with the other networks? To force so many youngsters to find out their future via an often faulty AFL website is nothing short of pathetic.
Once again the AFL has let money get in the way of the average supporter and the good of the game. Let's hope that things improve before the 2002 season starts.
Yours sincerely,
GOALden Hawk (well I didn't write GH but you know what I mean!)

I see you blame the AFL
How can the AFL MAKE the networks telecast it
they cant - they say they have tried but they can't
Channel 7's right to the draft would have been around for years.
They probably did not make a decision not to telecast it until after the deal was signed with the new consortium
THis is obviously the case
Therefore how could the AFL give the other networks a deal including an event which already belonged to another network.
You should write to Chanel Nine and Ten and not the AFL.
You live in Melbourne - why don't you go to the Tennis Centre for the draft or ask the AFL to allow spectators
Surely it is big enough for at least all the draft camp kids to go if they want to.
