I guess whe'll have to rely on the AFL's wonderful internet news service.

The people i feel for are the kids that aren't invited to the draft, they have to sit back and wait and hope for the phonecall.

THe AFL should hang their head in shame for not including the draft in the TV rights deal.

Cheers

how are we supposed to find out the details? Will bigfooty or any other sites have the information straight away? Is it definetly not on? :(

I think they're still debating this on my thread in the Aussie Rules Forum.

Gee I'm sorry that I was right. A lot of people said they liked watching it. What about the Fox footy channel? Not interested or not up yet?

Oh well.

They better bloody have live radio coverage! I wouldn't trust their internet site for quids!

You don't really need to see it I suppose, but it would be much more interesting than staring at the ceiling!!!

They said budget restrictions and other agreements prevented nine or ten from screening it.They are negotiating something with the radio I think but it just wont be the same.No highlights of the players no Kevin Sheehan crapping on endlessly:(

Not up yet, and they'll only have replay rights. Apparently this draft was meant to be Channel Seven's to show, but they dropped it early.

After 45 years of work then YANK!..I guess they see no reason to promote it.

If anyone is to be blamed it is Channel 7.
I disagree Roylion. I think if anyone is to be blamed it's the AFL. they are the 'custodians of the game' and the ones responsible for dealing with the TV rights issues. It is their responsibility to ensure telecasts of events like the draft are available for fans.

The AFL is the one to blame for not including the 2001 draft in the broadcast deal....Blind Freddy could see that 7 wouldn't bother showing it...what's in it for them?

As phatandphreaky said...what about the poor kids who have to sit around waiting to see if they will be drafted or not. Plus none of us will actually get to see footage or pictures of the players who are so important to the club's future progress.

UP YOURS AFL!

I think as many of us as possible should bombard the sports and TV journos to show our disgust at this decision.

Makes me glad I've still got my tape of the TAC Cup Grand Final...

Here is a letter I just sent to a few of the sports journos.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Editor,

The 2002 AFL season hasn't started yet and already I, along with many other loyal footy fans, are beginning to question the wisdom of handing the broadcast rights over to the new consortium. First we had a sloppy performance by Channel 9 during the International Rules series. Then we had a fixture determined more by TV ratings than equality for the 16 teams, and now we have the latest decision that means the National Draft will not be telecast by any of the networks.

This decision is a disgrace and flies in the face of the promised greater promotion of the national game. Sure, the AFL draft may not be the most riveting viewing, but none the less it is a crucial part of the season, and many fans tune in every year to see who will be the future champions of their clubs. Even worse, hundreds of nervous young stars will be forced to wait for a phone call or an update on the internet before finding out what their fate is, and whether they will be spending their next two or three years interstate.

It should have been obvious during negotiations that Channel 7 would never show the National Draft, why didn't the AFL include it in the new deal with the other networks? To force so many youngsters to find out their future via an often faulty AFL website is nothing short of pathetic.

Once again the AFL has let money get in the way of the average supporter and the good of the game. Let's hope that things improve before the 2002 season starts.

Yours sincerely,

GOALden Hawk (well I didn't write GH but you know what I mean!)

Well said- not nearly enough vulgarity for my liking, but very well written all the same :)

I see you blame the AFL

How can the AFL MAKE the networks telecast it

they cant - they say they have tried but they can't

Channel 7's right to the draft would have been around for years.

They probably did not make a decision not to telecast it until after the deal was signed with the new consortium

THis is obviously the case

Therefore how could the AFL give the other networks a deal including an event which already belonged to another network.

You should write to Chanel Nine and Ten and not the AFL.

You live in Melbourne - why don't you go to the Tennis Centre for the draft or ask the AFL to allow spectators

Surely it is big enough for at least all the draft camp kids to go if they want to.

I, too, am mad and disgusted that the Draft won't be on TV. Goalden Hawke, can you forward your letter to 5AA here in Adelaide - the email address is: onair@fiveaa.com.au

We should also email the AFL - I have already done so. P'raps they don't realise how many people are interested.

What do you seriously reckon the ratings for the draft are?

Very few people watch it. Only footy die hards like ourselves.

There are more things to get angry about.

Cricket will be on anyway.

The AFL knew months in advance that this was going to happen, why didn't they do something about it sooner? If Channel 9 and 10 don't own the TV rights how can I blame them - the rights are held by Channel 7 according to the official media release on the AFL website.

I have written to all 3 networks and Foxtel appealing to them to televise it, if I get any responses I will tell you. But the AFL must have negotiated some deal to get 9 to televise the International Rules series, why didn't they do the same for the National Draft?

That's a good point on spectators...might ask the AFL if that will be allowed...but knowing them I doubt it.
