Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

Hey Ant. Just wondering, Is Brad Ebert a F/S possibility for Port?

No he isnt. Not sure if he could have been under the olds rules but currently he will go into the draft.

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

What are the odds that we pick another tall first in Lachie Henderson? I keep hearing rave reviews on that athletic youngster, if he's the best available surely we pick him.

To be honest after Kreuzer i think the next 5 or 6 best players in the draft are midfielders.
No one really knows if Henderson has come on from last year simply becasue he hasnt played much footy this year. From what i saw of him last year he was a very similar player to Gumbleton with a little more upper body size.

If we finish behind the Bulldogs, I think there's no chance of him slipping. Carlton or Richmond might also have interest in him. He's easily the second best tall in the draft, but there will be midfielders still available when we come into the draft that will give us more than Henderson in my opinion.

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

The fact both guys were outside mids is why I thought they were more suitable for us. We only have Houli and maybe Stanton in that department ATM. With Watson, Hislop, Monfries, Slattery, McVeigh and the older guys we have plenty of grunt in the middle, what we miss is the dash and flash players currently which I thought these 2 guys were.

Ant sums up my thoughts.

I think you have completly missed on what our problem is. When we lose we get smashed in the clearances. Plain and simple. With Hird out and JJ past his best we only have Watson who can regualry get his hands on the footy first.
You can have all the outside men you want but if you have not got anyone to get them the footy then they are not going to get a kick.
As far as you saying we have only got Houli and Stanton as outside men well what about Davey and Lovett (yes i know he is a showboat) or Nash or Jetta or Reimers . McVeigh goes hard but he isnt a genuine clearance man and his kicking skills are better suited to him being the handball reviever rather than the handball giver. Slatts is more of a tagger than a clearance king. So we really only have Hislop and Monfries as in and under clearance players and i dont think Gus reads it well enough to be a genuine clearing rover anyway.
Yes it would be good to have an another nice classy finisher but we need someone to get the footy to them first.

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

I only saw one game (on T.V.) (WA vs Vic. Metro) in which Vic got smashed, however Addam Maric was really good up forward and reminded me a bit of brett ebert and is a brilliant kick. However, as Ant says there are probably doubts as to whether he can play in the midfield. If he is available with our second pick (which is unlikely) we should seriously consider him.

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

Brad Ebert is our man in my opinion.

I rate this guy the highest of all midfielders in the draft, and I believe his class above the rest will show from the very beginning, whether he be at Essendon or not.

Ebert has it all. He's great at winning the contested ball and you can trust on him never taking a backward step from a contest, he's quick which makes him equally damaging as a receiver, he has reliable disposal, he's got excellent aerial skills, he's a pure midfielder, he's ready to step straight into an AFL side and he's a natural leader to boot. He ticks all boxes for what we need.

On the flip side all the others seem to have doubts over them in one area or an other.

Trent Cotchin has struggled when receiving extra attention and there's doubts over his midfield qualities, some believe he's more of a half-forward flanker.

Chris Masten lacks explosiveness in his game and there's some doubt as to whether his junior efforts will be able to pass on into the seniors.

Rhys Palmer's taken a long time to show he's a top 5/10 pick and needs to be fed at times.

Cale Morton doesn't have the qualities of an inside midfielder and lacks accountability.

In saying the above, I know I could be wrong, but no matter what pick we end up with, Brad Ebert is my first choice.

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

would like to see us take a midfielder first up.... Palmer or Masten ... I'm a bias sandgroper however..

GREAT WORK ANT

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

Who gave Palmer all his kicks? Masten...

Totally agree that Chris can bring others into the game has a solid engine too ... PUt Rhys can win the footy don't worry about that:)

If we end up with either i would be happy;)

Re: 2007 draft - midfielders

Have heard that Ebert is likely to be overlooked early on

Exactly the reason why he's our man.

From what I've seen, which I think is a fair bit, Ebert looks the goods. Her may not have dominated the Championships but given the fact that he made All-Australian alone is outstanding considering the state of South Australia this year. Levi Greenwood is probably the only other for SA that could hold his head up high.

Chances are that he will be overlooked for the really early picks because all the talk has been about Palmer, Masten, Cotchin and Morton and, to a lesser extent, Selwood and Grimes.

Ebert's just as good as those guys.

He shapes as the Joel Selwood of the 2007 draft in my opinion. That is, the guy that's just as good as, if not better than, the other fancied guys but isn't the flavour of the month come draft time.

I expect Ebert to surprise a few people next year.

I completely agree, Ebert is the on the dons need. Along with what you've mentioned, he's fairly tall and is quite decent overhead.... Just what we need.

For those that have not seen these kids yet, here is a brief look at some of them.

This was the only thing i could find atm, but will try to find some more.

Depends on your thoughts of a inside player vs. an outside player. I think of inside mids of the genuine tough crash and bash players regardless of foot or handskills. As you've already agreed Hislop, Watson and Monfries are all inside players. Regardless of his kicking ability McVeighs toughness and pressure play make him an inside man along with Nash. Slatts as a tagger is automatically an inside man. Davey is a inside flanker/pocket player with his chasedowns and willingness to throw his body on the line and to valuable as a forward to play alot of midfeild. Lovett is also better suited forward than in the middle but is an outside player. Winders plays like an inside man. So we only have Jetta,Reimers, Houli and Stanton as outsiders IMO. Stanton is obviously a gun. Houli has showed potential but has a bit to learn. Haven't seen enough of Reimers to judge. Jetta is lacking in so many fundamentals i'm beginning to wonder if he's worth it. he's to short, to lightly built, has off-field problems and didn't show alot when he had his opportunities.

McPhee should take over Hirdy's role next year if we are to persevere with Ryder down back which would add another inside player to the mix.
