I really don't understand the obsession with a mature player this year. They fail just as often and as hard as younger recruits. Often there is a good reason why they weren't picked up in the first place. And whilst we can get excited about prospects like Pods, Barlow & Palmer they are exceptions to the rule. In many cases they are often over-rated as well, simply because they make an immediate impact. I remember the excitement around Jake King a couple years back. Pods faded hard this year. And need I raise the names Nick Gill & Bryce Campbell?
You can add Adam Richardson and Brodie Atkinson to that pair.

I doubt Adelaide will be drafting any ruckmen in 2010, certainly not in the ND and almost certainly not in the RD.

We just traded for Jacobs. We also have Maric, Moran, McKernan, Sellar, Craig and Tippett who can all ruck (though Tippett's preferred position is at FF). We have no need for another ruckman at all.

That said, there are plenty of clubs out there who do need one...

Hmmm - I'd be fine with rookie listing someone. There's no home runs in that list ...

Actually, I'd be more than happy for us to rookie a ruckman, especially a raw, but athletic one. We've got plenty of rookie selections available, after all. We've got a bunch of ruckman that are either ready to go now or should be in the next year or two, but you can never start project ruckmen too early. They can take several years to even reach AFL level. If they've already got athletic capabilities, all the better. And if worse comes to worse, they have decent currency for trading if they show any potential, even without much AFL exposure.

Of course, it would be nice if he was 200cm and not 198cm. I'm generally of the opinion that 198cm is perfectly fine for a ruckman though, I think the line between undersized and sufficiently big needn't be at exactly 200cm.

I heard Jordy Mcmahon talking on 5AA earlier in the week, and he stated that he'd moved back here. Is hoping to get drafted by one of the SA clubs, any interest for a rookie list spot?

You really need to punish yourself for even suggesting this!

Go away and think about what you have done.:D

There is nothing wrong with picking up a mature age player.(Puopolo would be nice)Some work some do not,but players like Campbell and Gill suffered continually from the injury curse,so it is a bit harsh to say they were failures.
For all Gills flaws he was at his best a very athletic player with a good grab and he did play some good games for us.
Adam Richardson was a one trick pony who was stuffed once the ball hit the deck,so the crows definately made a boo boo there.
I dont think people are getting carried away with the success of some of the mature age players who are making a good go of it.
Its just highlighting the blinkered nature of some AFL recruiters!
The future of a club is in its youth,"but" there are players outside of the AFL system over the age of twenty who are worth looking at!
They dont all develop at the same rate!

Yeah all fair points. The blinkers have been on. But saying, "We should recruit a mature age player at 61" seems foolish to me, when best available should be the guiding principle.

The mature age player could be the best available at 61. Atleast with a player like that, you know what you'll get, with some potential upside. With a kid, it is all an unknown.

Matty R has said on AA that he has someone in mind for 61...might have just been to throw everyone off the scent...guess it depends who is still on his list. Big chance for a couple of mature rookies.

Maybe. Maybe not.

Rendell has also said that they would take 2 kids with 14 and 61, and the more mature age players as rookies..

Rendell says a lot of contradictory things before a draft so as to confuse everybody IMO.

Seems to work ok!! :)

Jay Nash a chance for mature rookie? I remember we were after a trade for him a couple of years back..Didn't do much wrong at port this year, unlucky to be delisted IMO

everybody is pionting to brodie smith as our pick at 14,now he may be great i really dont know the lad but after reading a write up on jayden pitt from the geelong falcons he sounds just what neil craig likes, any thoughts.

In time he could become a very good play, reminds me a bit of JMP.

Had an final champs game and is exceptionally thin but has one of the best kicks in the draft pool. He'll be taken. But I don't think he's worth 14 at this stage. There are better options avaliable.
