Ideal draft:

Pick 1: Duursma
Pick 2: Robey
Pick 13: Dovaston

Banfield, Williams, Evans and Curtain with later picks/rookie spots.

Cumming looks good too, not sold on Sharp.
I'd go Greeves over Dova, The Robey/Greeves synergy is pretty good! possibly sharp over Robey...

On Sharp (and whether or not we can trade down and still get him, or whether Mini is certain these types of players won't fit our gamestyle, I won't comment on).

But I truly do believe those types of players are crucial to success.

Dunkley was BnF in Brisbane's win this year - an accolade I do agree with Buckley (ew) is perhaps the highest honour a player can get. He's played in 5 Grand Finals for 3 wins, the best record of any current player. He now also holds the record for tackles in a final.

Top 5 picks always seem to be rated on "will they be Chris Judd or not". Which is fair, you always hope for a Brownlow type player when you're shit and have some early picks. But I dunno, we've got Reid, we've got Hewett who could be anything, we've maybe got an opportunity to trade up to a third pick above where Cripps (13), Neale (58 obviously), Fyfe (20) or even possibly Dangerfield (10) was picked, as well as Wanganeen-Milera (11) or obviously Warner (39).

For all the excitement around those types of players I do think you also need players who aren't going to win a Brownlow but are elite at the contested mid position. Given we already have Reid, I'd honestly be happy to pay pick 2 for a player with the existing/projected career of Dunkley or Tom Green. They're vital to a side and it's no surprise the best teams have one of those types contributing to premiership success. Sometimes they're universally acknowledged (Dunkley, Cotchin) but often underrated and/or managed to perform the role at a peak time (Atkins, Viney, Libba, Redden). For all the admittedly enjoyable chat of a "Redden replacement" I actually think the role goes underacknowledged and assumed you can fill without someone elite at it - Adelaide this year filled that role with a bunch of B graders and it showed IMO.

Will Sharp be a 5 time Brownlow medallist? From the sounds of draft ratings definitely not and he'd be well down the list on that kind of potential. But will he be a vital, elite cog in a premiership side? Not that I've watched him like the draft watchers on here but I dunno, I'd like to see us invest in that kind of player.

For reference, the 'query' on Josh Dunkley in his draft year was apparently: "He's not an especially classy user of the ball, which is something he'll need to lift at the next level and something he has worked tirelessly towards. Dunkley isn't overly quick, but he can think through situations well enough to get around that."

That kinda sounds like Sharp's weaknesses. He's not super slow but sounds like some are writing him off as a top prospect cause he's not quick - I'd disagree with that vibe.

Pick 1. Duursma.
Pick 2. Sharp
Pick 13. Cummings, Dovaston or NHH.
Pick 34. Williams Bid Match
Pick 53. Banfield

Evans CatB
Pick 1 RD: Blake Kelly

Big cohort of runners and ball winners. No talls.
Common sense prevails. Mids and runners amen.

Can't see cumming dovaston being there at 13 tho.

Like the Kelly thought too

100% agree, baffling doesn't even begin to describe it.
Really? The concept of picking best available at picks 1 & 2 is baffling?

You may disagree with the assessment of best available at 1 and 2 or you may not think that should be the strategy given our list needs but I'd hardly call it baffling. Seems almost the universal philosophy of clubs with top 5 draft picks.

Dyson Sharp
State: South Australia
State League Club: Central District
Community Club: Barossa District
Date of Birth: 23/05/2007
Height: 188cm

A strong-bodied midfielder, Sharp knows how to dominate clearances, using his strength, power and footy nous to win contests. A competitive beast, he was the star player of the National Championships, averaging 27 disposals at 76.6 percent efficiency, along with 11 contested possessions, five tackles and six clearances to lead South Australia to the title. Won his team’s MVP, as well as the Larke Medal for the best and fairest player overall at the Championships. Already a dual All Australian at under 16s level, he was named captain of the under 18s All Australian Team to complete a remarkable underage career, having represented his state with great distinction. Did not test at the Draft Combine due to illness. Another graduate of the Marsh AFL National Academy.

Pick 2 come on down Dyson.

Considering most seem to have CDT ranked 2 and Sharp ranked 3. It's not like there's a big difference in who might be best available.

I Reckon this happens with a lot of WA and SA boys. When they go play league they play a role as opposed to being the star. Someone who then plays multiple games if not the majority in seniors it then clouds their dominance against juniors as pundits expect them to dominate.

Not a draft watcher, But I like the sound of the best contested mid suiting up for us.

You could be right. I reckon both options, keeping or trading picks, have their merits.
I was mainly just trying to map out how things might look based on the trade proposal with the Dons that others have been tossing around.

From what’s been said though, it doesn’t sound like Dovatson is any real chance of sliding to our pick at 13. I think you’re probably looking more at players like Farrow, Greeves or NHH in that range and to be honest, none of them really grab me as much.

If we went down this route, I could see our options unfolding something like this:
  1. Duursma (WCE)
  2. Uwland (GC) - West Coast/Essendon bid
  3. Patterson (GC) - Essendon bid
  4. CDT (ESS)
  5. Annable (BRIS) - Richmond bid
  6. Robey (RICH)
  7. Grijl (RICH)
  8. Sharp (WCE)
  9. Dovatson / Cumming / Lindsay / Taylor / Schubert (WCE)
The reason I’ve got us taking Dovatson in this scenario is that with Reid, Hewett, Sharp and Duursma, we’d already have a strong mix of mids who can push forward, so Cumming becomes less of a need. Curtin looks like a great tall option a bit later on, so I wouldn’t go for Schubert here. Meanwhile, Lindsay and Taylor are defensive types, and that’s probably the area we’re already best stocked in with Hough, Starcevich, Ginbey, McCarthy and Kenh (next year) shaping as our future DEF core.

Honestly, if we somehow landed Duursma, Sharp, Dovatson, Curtin, plus Williams and Banfield, that’d be one of our best-ever draft hauls in my opinion.
I agree with most of your points. I'm taking anyone of the others you've listed at 9 ahead of Dovaston personally. In my view the point of the trade is to get Schubert/cumming or Lindsay in place of Greaves/ Dovaston or NHH. If you trade then take the player you could have had at 13 (open pool) there isnt a lot of point really.

Also if taking our NGAs small forward isnt even really a position of need so doesnt make sense to reach for Dovaston really. 20251017_062816.jpg

Don’t actually mind us taking CDT, the draft isn’t really exciting me and at least he some real weapons to work with. My only problem with taking him is surely we are eyeing off A.Walsh.
This.

A top line mid would be great, but there isn’t one in this draft. Take the two best players with 1 and 2.

Draft Picks Pre-Trade Period: 1, 16, 22, 23, 37, 56
Draft Picks Post-Trade Period: 1, 2, 13, 34, 41, 53, 58, 80

The Eagles hit the jackpot by receiving pick 2 as compensation for departing free agent Oscar Allen and now head into next month’s national draft with the first two selections. Early expectations are that they will use those first two picks on Victorian pair Willem Duursma and Cooper Duff-Tytler, who have been both high-level football and basketball opponents over the years. Midfielder-forward Duursma also has a connection with young Eagles star Harley Reid, while ruckman-forward Duff-Tytler would fill a list need. West Coast was also able to shuffle up to add a third top-15 pick, where players like West Australian rebounding defender-midfielder Jacob Farrow, South Australian marking forward Mitch Marsh or Victorian small forward Lachy Dovaston could come into the picture.

With the later picks, the Eagles have access to father-son Charlie Banfield and Next Generation Academy members Tylah Williams and Koby Evans. Small forward Williams has been working part-time in West Coast’s merchandise store this year and performed strongly at the national draft combine earlier this month, while midfielder Banfield (son of Drew) took out the 2km time trial at the WA State Draft Combine last weekend. Another small forward, Wes Walley, is also available through the NGA but shapes as more of a rookie chance. The Eagles plan to use four or five picks in the national draft overall, which means they could try to trade some of those second or third-round selections into next year, depending on where bids come for their linked talent.

Difference is Axel is actually a ruckman. CDT is a tall 'something' that cant ruck. Not convinced we need another Bailey Williams but as you please.

Sometimes the boring answer is the right answer. Give me 250+ games of a Libba clone and I’m good.
