Williams can fill that positional need...If he cant then we shouldnt draft him at all

Not the same player. Don't play a similar role or in a similar way.

If you look at Fremantle, they play Frederick, Bolton, Dudley, and Switkowski together without any issue, and you can do the same with an even more talented cohort like Hawthorn and Brisbane do.

If you want to build layers to your attack and fix our transition game (inside to out and front to back) then both would play 23 games next year without much hassle.

Your position appears to be that the experts know what they are doing.

How then do you explain the last five years?
Haha, I knew that would be the first response and it has merit. Hopefully different experts do better.
I don't think our last 5 years would have been any better if we handed the job over to the meltiest, whiniest self proclaimed expert posters around these parts.

Not to get into the Blicavs/CDT who has more talent argument, but,

CDT ran a 6:21 2km time trial. That's decent by draftee times. Blicavs best was 5:18. That's elite by any standards.
Tbf to CDT, was Blicavs not in middle-distance Olympic 2012 contention at one point?

Prior to being drafted in the rookie at like 21 or 22

Yep, and by the time you put on muscle and adapt to a footy physique and conditioning...those raw numbers are less relevant.

Great athlete regardless, but those numbers are misleading.

The flaw with that logic is that you value Williams or Banfield, who may get bid on late, over the talent that would otherwise be taken at 9.

With 5 list spots, using Twomey's rankings:
Current: Duursma(1), CDT(2), Marsh(13), Wililams(bid), Banfield(bid)
vs
Proposed: Duursma(1), Sharp (5), Farrow (9), Phillipou(11), Banfield* (bid)

I'm taking the proposed option every day of the week.

*Personal assumption that we'd rate Banfield as a f/s a priority over Williams, passing on a Williams bid if it comes before a Banfield bid.
If Williams is bid early I would rather use 34 on Fred Rodriguez

Look at this blokes mock draft simulator. I'm not even focused on any of the picks or trades he's talking about...that program he's using looks absolutely incredible, the pick points, the player comps and stuff...looks clean as hell

In almost all trade options we are looking like Dursma , Cdt , Farrow or
Dursma Sharp Farrow

Plus maybe even Dovaston

Prior to being recruited by Geelong, Blicavs was a middle-distance runner and steeplechaser, who attempted to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

3000m steeple chaser. Almost become 1500m Olympian.

His elite running capacity is unmatched by any AFL player......ever.

His PBs
1500 3.44
for perspective that's 500m short of the 2km time trial at AFL draft combine that 6.20 is consider elite. He does the same distance with a steeplechase thrown in for good measure and still would beat most AFL draftees. He holds the u18 2000m steeplechase record of 6.09.

800 1.53

3000 8.18

Thing is, what if someone then takes Rodriguez at 33?

Then you get neither.

Sometimes it's bird in the hand stuff.

I'm guessing, if the likelihood is high that someone rated by the club well ahead of Williams will be available at 34, then sure, you don't match. But if the likelihood is not that good, then take him, even if a few spots earlier.

I was previously with you on pick 13 but I’ve come round to there being a very desirable player available. I think one of Dovaston, Phillipou, Grlj or Barker will be available at 13 and I’d prioritise them in that order.

There is a reason Adelaide are giving up a F1 and still wanting to keep 16. I guess they are hoping one of Schubert Sharp or Cumming are still there at 9. At 16, Marsh or Barker would be targets.

The top 5 is likely to be Duursma CDT Robey Sharp and Cumming with one of Grlj or XTaylor rounding out 6.

Dees at 7+8 I have taking Schubert and Grlj. They have undersized KPF’s at present so Schubert makes so much sense and they need midfield speed. Taking Lindsay last year makes me think they pass on Farrow

I can see the Crows being disappointed at 9. That is assuming they target SA talent. Farrow would be an option but I wouldn’t discount Marsh or Phillipou.

Hawks expected to take Greeves at 10

Is 11 swallowed up by Dean or do the Blues trade back?

GWS being linked to Oscar Taylor for tsunami surges, but they might just go another small forward in Dovaston as that is what they do and he would be mentored by Toby.

1. Duursma (West Coast)
2. Duff-Tytler (West Coast)
3. Robey (Richmond)
4. X Taylor (Richmond)
5. Cumming (Essendon)
6. Sharp (Essendon)
7. Grlj (Melbourne)
8. Schubert (Melbourne)

Carlton probably lose at least one of 9 or 11 matching a bid for Dean. Best case for us is they actually hold both picks and take the slide back to just after our pick (needs a Richmond bid or Essendon with their first pick).

Assuming they trade one/keep one then between Melbourne’s pick and ours there’ll be picks by Hawthorn, GWS and someone else - Adelaide the most likely

Hawthorn - Greeves
GWS - O Taylor

would be good for us, especially if Adelaide were to take Marsh

Any of Dovaston, Farrow or Lindsay I’d be okay with in that instance

Give them the same speed and CDT still has more natural footballing ability than Blicavs.

This shouldn’t even be a debate, blokes in here seem to think he’s a consensus pick 2 for no reason.
I'm actually happy to take him at #2, but not at all confident. I wouldn't be surprised to see a maligned start to his career. All his strengths seem to be square peg-round hole instances.

How come saints are allowed to draft a 17 year old gaelic footballer but the local loads have to be 18?

Not the first time the Saints have targeted underage teenagers...

I hope the Eagles are looking overseas to find talent.

With the NGA talent coming through next few years, Cat B rookie spots might be tight

With the departure of Livingston and Jamieson we are now a bit light on for true rucks. There’s Flynn, Bailey Williams and Barnett as pure rucks, then Jack Williams and Archer Reid who appear to be seen more as KPF/ruck options.

Flynn is injury prone. Barnett has struggled to compete at WAFL level but presumably will be asked to lead the ruck there. Flynn and Bailey Williams are generally uncompetitive at AFL level such that their opponent is often best on ground.

Maybe all this points to CDT at 2, despite the misgivings as to whether’s he’s truly a ruck. Or maybe the club intends to pick up another rookie in one of the drafts.
