Rookie Me Central 2025 Draft Guide

Matthew Clarke on Gettable 17/11

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft

There was a report maybe a month ago that WC had put a fair bit of work into Pickett, not sure of the source and dont quote me but I think it was Cavanagh from Code sports.
Then again recently SMH Mark McGowan suggested WC are very keen on Pickett, don't know the intel but someone put up the SMH article a few days ago that did a phantom draft and if I rememeber correctly and WC were agian linked to WC with 1 of their picks.
There was also a SA article I read recently that mentioned the Pickett WC link.
I would say there is smoke but not sure if it's fire??

There's definitely vibes here and there that he seems poised to be picked up a lot earlier than collective expectation has had it.

Probably a function of limited accessibility to SANFL matches, so not much exposure except to recruiters.

The draft cost is fine but what about the opportunity cost of missing out on one of Evan’s or banfield? That’s my issue.

The poster I replied to was specifically talking about if he was bid on in the 1st round. Was pointing out the cost is still 34 (and/or 41) to us so where it comes doesn't really matter if we want him

Missing out on one of the other 2 because of lack of list spots is a completely different issue that could've been avoided pretty easily as has been pointed out over and over in here

We obviously dont rate one of the 3 (at least) good enough for a main list spot

I think Macrae would be good competition for Hutchinson as well, and may even be able to play on the opposite flank if we do have issues with our forwards.

Macrae 1.88m.

Thats Harley hieght. Didnt think he was that tall.

Plus Dev. Hopefully Yeo. Graham stays fit.

We got some support for the kids finally.

The question is what are Essendon willing to offer for CDT, or Robey. F1 will not get that done. Nowhere near it.

We have all the cards. Its up to Essendon to pay well overs if they want pick 2.
This is exactly why it’s rare that early trade swaps occur. Both sides rarely find a fare compromise. WC hold the whip hand but 5 or 6 plus an F1 is a price I don’t think any club would pay. Time will tell.

Does Cals phantom draft get released tomorrow on Gettable?
From my memory, it was around this time last year it came out.

You’re advocating CDT aren’t you? So the more apt comparisons are to the forward/ruck types taken very early rather than to Bont, Buddy or Dusty. And there have been plenty of drafting disasters in that regard…

Tom Boyd as pick one in 2013.
Jonathan Patton at pick one in 2011.
Peter Wright at pick 8 in 2014.
Josh Schache at pick 2 in 2015.
Kepler Bradley at pick 6 in 2003.

Some of these guys were more forward than ruck, some were entirely forwards and Bradley ended up more as a defender. But CDT had only moderate impact as a ruck in the under 18 championships, and he’s undersized as a ruck. So there’s a real chance he needs to make it as a KPP, a position in which he’s entirely unproven.
Not true CDT has played CHB as a Underager, also forward effectively. Hes not a first ruck at this stage but has very special points of difference. Amazing pace, brilliant ball handling and great footy smarts. He’s not unlike Buddy with his movement but is a better mark than Franklin. I’m not suggesting he’s a Buddy in the making but probably has the highest Ceiling in this draft. It’s your dilemma. Rucks are not usually sought after this early but there is no denying he’s not your typical developing ruck who lingers in the twos. He can be played in almost any position and I think this is what will see him develop far quicker than other ruck types.

Anyone else a little bamboozled by the talk of tylah williams as late first round - second round prospect .

In 8 colt games he kicked 4 goals (as a 17 year old he average a goal a game)
1 in 2 league appearances
And 3 at u18 champs

To me he screams rookie prospect.

I wouldn’t match a ND bid with the prospect of missing out on Evans or Banfield. They are better prospects imo.
Maybe this is why we only have 5 list spots - mgmt thinking its likely he'll get a bid before we'd be willing to match

Couple of weeks on, I'm still Duursma and Robey at 1 and 2. Couldn't be more obvious to me! then another mid at 13 or after trading up to 9 Grjl would be ideal but Hibbons-Hargrave could be a good back up option.
I'm also for duursma & robey but wouldn't be taking another mid after that

I think mid stocks of Harley, duursma, robey, hewett, allan, gross should keep us going for a while. Plus Banfield, Evans, possibly Chad in 2028

I read into this statement a few things.

1. Carlton are on notice we might bid for Dean at 2

2. The likelihood of moving 13 up is not high and Blues might be playing hard to get with our bluff. Damn well bid on Dean after Uwland but before Patterson.

3. Suns - we will be bidding early. We want your players and if they are not available, then our picks 34+41 will come in fast.

4. 34+41 could be bundled and traded for something like the Suns 28

5. There are targets at 13 we like

Some things on this

1. It depends on what Carlton do with picks 9 and 11, but almost certainly one of those picks will be lost matching a bid on Dean and the other will be traded to either Adelaide, St Kilda or us. Means we will be getting, at worst, the 12th pick in the open pool. Duursma, CDT, Robey, X Taylor and Cumming all seem very unlikely to make it past Melbourne’s picks.

Leaves a group of six we’d be looking to pick from -
• Sharp
• Grlj
• Schubert
• Farrow
• Lindsay
• Dovaston

If we can trade up for pick 9, at least 3 of that group would be available, however, if we can’t they could all be gone unless one or more of the next group are taken by Hawthorn (pick 10), Adelaide/St Kilda (pick 11) or GWS (pick 12)
• Phillipou (Saints if they get pick 11)
• Marsh (Adelaide if they get pick 11)
• O Taylor (linked to GWS)
• Hibbins-Hargreaves
• Barker

Us bidding on Dean would be very detrimental to Carlton’s plans so them trading pick 9 to us for 13 and 34 would be mutually beneficial. We could even slide back from 41 to 43 to give them an extra 36 points without really hurting ourselves

2. If we can’t get a trade done with Carlton, then there’s merit in using 34,41 to trade up with the target being pick 24 held by Gold Coast. Can’t chase pick 23 held by Brisbane since we traded it to them.

Consider the draft order from our pick 13, which will drift to 16 due to bids on the three northern academy kids

I’ve assumed the proposed trade of picks 15,52 from Gold Coast to Essendon for picks 21 and 27 goes ahead before the draft starts - makes sense for both clubs as Gold Coast get an extra 239 points and Essendon move their 3rd pick up 6 spots whilst having two later picks for bid matching

The bolded picks will be lost to match bids whilst the picks in italics are held by clubs with NGA/Academy kids that might receive bids prior to their pick

17. Western Bulldogs
18. Essendon - traded from Gold Coast
19. Adelaide
20. Brisbane
21. Gold Coast

20. Geelong
21. Fremantle
24. Gold Coast - traded from Essendon
22. Hawthorn
26. Brisbane
* End R1 *
27. Gold Coast

23. North Melbourne
24. North Melbourne
30. Gold Coast - traded from Essendon
31. Gold Coast
32. Gold Coast

25. Essendon
26. Sydney
27. Sydney

28. Western Bulldogs
29. West Coast
30. GWS
31. Gold Coast
32. Melbourne
33. Richmond
34. Collingwood
35. Geelong
36. West Coast
37. Sydney
* End R2 *

Trading 34 and 41 to Gold Coast for 24 prior to bids means West Coast jump ahead of North (2 picks), Essendon, Sydney (2 picks) and the Bulldogs. That pick, which would be the first pick on night two, has only 6 live picks from our pick 13 to when we get to pick again.

The names I listed previously would probably already be gone, however all but 2 of the following would be available:
• Greeves
• Ludowyke
• Emmett
• Nairn
• Thredgold
• Pickett

Thredgold would be my preference, followed by Pickett. I also think it’d be unlikely there’s a bid on Williams before that pick, given the other options available to clubs selecting prior to that pick. Some of those players might still be there with our 4th pick even if we don’t trade up unless we decide to match a possible Williams bid by then

There’s also a stack of NGA/Academy players that might attract bids in late R1/early R2:
• King (Sydney)
• Ison (Carlton)
• Addinsall (Gold Coast)
• Sweid (Essendon)
• McCarthy (Collingwood)
• Kyle (Sydney)
• Murray (Gold Coast)
• Carmichael (Sydney)

And our own Tylah Williams

Also noteworthy, is in that range only Geelong, Fremantle, Hawthorn, North (x2) and the Bulldogs have live picks which they could use to lodge bids - so the early part of night two could get really interesting to see who attracts bids and who slides through

And if we don’t trade up using 41 players like Rodriguez, Swadling, Curtin, Oodshould-Bennier, LeRay, Dalton etc are potentially still on the board if we want to take a 5th pick and chance both Evans and Banfield getting through without a bid

A week to go before we see how it all plays out

Good analysis.

1 slight variable. Don’t discount that 9 and 11 could be Crows and St Kilda. Saints give away a F1 to get Phillipou MkII at 11 and Crows to move up from 16 to 9. Somehow Blues would have 16 plus other points to match Dean and Ison.

The noise on us and CDT is getting louder outside of this board so I am resigned to us taking him. I’ve been scratching my brain as to where to start him and it may be CHB. 1 year in the WAFL learning the position then next year bring him in. If that is the case, I like Thredgold but I’d prioritise a pure mid.

I’d be OK staying at 13 and getting BOB or Baker. I hear there are recruiters that think similar to me on this line and believe both will go off the board before Greeves (unless BODE get all romantic re his grandpa)
