who is this brennan mills?

Highly rated as a Claremont kid last year, but suffered a broken leg back in the '04 Championships.

Didn't start his '05 campaign until mid-June due to the leg injury, but went onto play some Colts games (10 I think), albeit without any oustanding form - perhaps unsurprisingly.

Only 179cm, but a good in-and-under type midfielder prepared to get his own ball. Also has handy pace, although its nothing special, but he uses to good effect when he looks to run and carry. In many ways, a genuine footballer - clean, uses the ball well and has some footy smarts to go with the lot.

No sure thing, especially in light of the injury and its effect, but he definitely has something to offer, at the very least, as a rookie.

Somewhat related to the draft, but it looks like our VFL boy, Rowan Bonson, could be headed back down the highway - good stuff.

Kudos to Wayne from CC for the article.

Northern Territory News
Wednesday 26th October 2005

NIGHTCLIFF flyer Rowan Bonson is one of four Indigenous Territorian's invited to a pre season with AFL Club Geelong.

Bonson 20, is the pick of the bunch and is being groomed to make the Cat's Rookie List and has previously attracted attention from rival club's Hawthorn & Essendon.

Bonson, Wayne Runyu, Steven Andrews & Peter Amarant all form the Aboriginal Community of Barunga - 400km South East of Darwin, received letters from Victorian Football League (VFL) Geelong Coach Leigh Tudor.

The Quartet will join about 20 other invited players from around Australia for the start of pre season on November 21st.

Bonson was named as a top up player during a 3 month stint in Geelong earlier this year, but his stay was shortened when he returned home for a funeral and did not return.

The 'Burunga Program' which included a group of 10 Territorians, made an impression on the football mad Victorian community when they arrived at feeder club Bell Park in March for a 6 month stay.

The Geelong Football League (GFL) club's operations manager Peter Burke said the invitation with an indefinite stay was given because Geelong believed in their ability and was keen to offer them an oppertunity.

"Rowan Bonson is a very talented player", Burke said, "He could be anything and if he commits himself he has a future at Geelong. Certainly if he is interested, Geelong wants him on the training suqad. Geelong & Bell Park are excited and keen to support him."

Runyu, 25, was the leader of the group and his hard work and commitment paid off with a debut game in the VFL in August.

"All of us proved ourselves down there with our hardness and skill's", Runyu said. "It was realy good, now we are looking forward to going down there again and hopefully we all break into the team."

Andrews, 18 in December and Amarant, 18, were 2 of six Territorian's in the GFL under 18 Grand Final win for Bell Park. "They are terrific young men", Burke said, "these guys can be anything they want."

A large group of footballer's from Burunga, accompanied by Sport and Recreation Officer Paul Amarant, regularly make the 4hr drive north to play with NTFL Club Nightcliff Tigers.

According to GFC, Andrew Siegert is training at Geelong after being flicked by the purple people. He fits the type we have gone after on occasions -
ex local ex Falcon etc.

In his early 20's , at 188 he might be a usefull type, similar to Koola in respect that he gives us another seasoned body to fill in if injuries strike. Worth P47?

Depending on the quality of the kids left over I suppose.

He goes alright for a depth player. Your typical team-first sort of guy, which is always handy I guess.

Problem is though, I'd be much more inclined to give a kid with alot more scope a chance before him. There could be a few kids who drop through and present high-risk high-reward sort of prospects, which could turn out to help the club in the future moreso than a guy like Siegert, whom I can't see being much more than a depth player.

he is on bigfooty draft but has no stats or info on him

Awesome player who broke his leg in the 18s championships in 04
captained the australian team against ireland in one game ahead of the likes of deledio,Franklin,Morton,Roughhead etc.
Nicknamed by recruiters as the rolls royce as he is so classy, hes the toughest player ive played with, quick and an awesome footballer.
Leg is pretty much at full strength had a few problems in screening with the leg in terms of jumping, still managed to be in the best on numerous occasions playing with the colts this year after not running for close on a year. Would of captained the 18s this year if not injured.

Fair points, Ill trust the Welles group to make the call.

How fast?.Any sub 180 player better not be speed restricted.
RollsRoyce is fine but we need a roller with V8supercar mojo.

can any one tell me any more about this rowan bonson ?
he sounds good and exactly what the cats need a fast, flashy, unprodictable aboriginal and now thurley has left we have a lower pick in the draft we can use for a smokie like we did with egan last year and how good did he turn out :thumbsu:

Has handy pace, but it's nothing special. Important thing is, he knows how to utilize it and run and carry to the right spots.

If we wanted locals these guys could be considered

Daniel Stanley VIC Geelong 186.2 89.5 18-Feb-88 Medium Def

Medium defender who plays with a real physical presence and is strong overhead. Victoria Country U18 representative and AIS/AFL Academy in 2005. Lovely long kick and excels in the one on one situations. Showed good agility and vertical leap at the NAB AFL Draft Camp with 8.34sec for Agility run (Top 30%) and 80cm Running Vertical Jump (Top 2%). From Ocean Grove FC.

Shaun Higgins VIC Geelong 183.5 78.8 04-Mar-88 Medium Mid

Medium midfielder who uses the ball well with hand and foot and is a high possession winner. Victoria Country U18 representative and TAC Cup Team of the Year in 2005. A courageous player with clean hands who wins the ball in traffic. He rarely goes to ground and works extremely hard on his game. From Newtown FC.

Remember this name , Caydn Beetham. In todays Age that he has nominated. Was a top 10 pick in the draft that gave us Corey and Linger. At 23 still has plenty to offer. Please consider !!!

Unless he's changed dramatically, I recall him being a mediocre kick. Explosive speed and strength around the contest are great attributes to have in a midfielder, but there's little point to it all when you can't finish off your hard work.

Doesn't seem to be a very secure young man either from most reports. When the going got tough, he quit. Something to take into consideration more than anything I suppose.

Being a former top 10 pick in a great draft sure has a nice ring to it, but I'd be a little more wary about his status now - both on the field and off it.

Higgins at 15 and Stanley at 31 would be unbelievable

Both bottom age mids that are tough as nails and skillful. Plus their locals.

Keep your fingers crossed. I know I am

The article today in the age talks about "The midfielder with explosive pace and a penetrating kick" so he must have reasonable feet. You might have a better memory of him than me, I seem to remeber him shaking tackles like Harvey, with a bit of a hip shake away he went.
As to whether he is a secure young man or not, Id say some body who walked away from it and then over a period reignited the passion enough to come back may just be more passinate than a the average pick.
Anyway , just pick up that could cost us little deep in the draft. Dont foget another player who had a go went away and came back to the big time , with us. Handy player that man.

Being able to apply 'penetration' to your kick does not necessarily equate to accuracy in execution of the skill. He can bomb the ball forward every oppurtunity he wants, but if he's not hitting a target, what good is that?

We've got enough guys on our list lacking in the footskills department without needing to add another.

I don't know about most others here, but I'd be looking at the skills of our potential draftees rather heavily. Some speed, flash, and class is all good, but it's almost bound to fall apart if you haven't got the skills. Footballer over athlete.

What im hoping on
15-Richard Douglas/Travis Varcoe/Darren Pfeiffer/Beau Dowler (definitley if around)
31-Ben Mckinley/Danny Stanley/Matthew Seal
35-Rob Warnock/Trent West
Last Pick-BRENNAN MILLS (if not already gone) Matt Riggio
pretty happy with our draft this year

I would have loved McKinley to have slipped to 31 and then we take West at 35, but unfortunately that wasn't the case. Owen sounds like he's going to take at least a couple of years, but hopefully Wells has seen something in him. I did like the Gamble pick though, he missed the Draft Camp, and hopefully we did our homework on him and he could be a good sleeper.
