It's big picture stuff. If we want the game to grow it needs to be truly National. For that to happen, the non traditional state's clubs have to be successful and they need to have local players playing for them. Suck it up for a few years.
Who says I want the game to grow in ****ing west Sydney?

Agree. There should be academies for all or academies for none.

Without thinking about it too deeply, I'm happy for only the northern teams to have their academies (maybe with some tweaks).

Either that or for everyone to have academies - not like an article I read recently that proposed all teams have academies EXCEPT teams from SA/WA - that would be outrageous!

I'm thinking academies could be tweaked such as by making it certain that teams are guaranteed to be able to draft their top 1 (or 1 & 2) academy prospects and all other being just like standard draft-able kids.

Wouldn't want rich clubs being able to attract many talented kids to their academy and benefiting too much.

The northern teams can still get a leg up by having extra players assured for access.

I happen to be of the belief that the integrity of the competition shouldn't be undermined for the sake of growing it in areas that don't have an interest in it. I am all for providing some avenue for local home grown talent to remain in these areas if it helps in the long run but I don't like the idea of handing teams quality players at below their normal draft cost.

If it were only for few years I might be able to accept it. Isnt it about time Sydney, a 30 year old club stopped getting leg ups? Ffs, they finish near the top and still get a pick 3 or 4 player. its a joke.

I'm all for zone selections. It has merit, but not just for 4 clubs. It is corrupting what is supposed to be an equalising system. good for one, good for all imo

Hence why you always draft best available talent.

Forget this notion that club should draft based on a need, that's ludicrous. That's how players like Buddy Franklin, Matthew Pavlich and in this case, Danial Talia get overlooked for a player who should never have been drafted that early.

Clubs should always draft for talent but trade for need.
funny thing was they were deperate for a kpd and talia was also best available.

These areas don't have an interest in the game because they didn't grow up with it. Exposing the kids to our incredible game, giving them a team they can legitimately cheer for and heroes they can aspire to, will mean AFL expands beyond its current confines.

Luckily those running the game aren't as small minded and aren't happy for the game to suffer to protect their petty allegiances.

The only way the AFL will grow is with tangibility. The kids can touch, feel and watch their team play.

AFL in Tasmania won't grow any more until they get their own team. Hawthorn and North Melbourne are only lining their own economic pockets. They don't care about footy in Tasmania. The GWS will grow, breed and create a culture in Western Sydney.

The AFL did the correct think by putting a team in Western Sydney and the Gold Coast.

Yet the prospect of following a competition where your team statistically has a chance of winning once every 20 years isn't a concern compares to having a team in west Sydney where they couldn't give a stuff about afl. Nor will the next generation or generation after that.

We certainly have different definitions of what a successful afl competition looks like. I don't think that makes me closed minded. Also, you're an arseh*le.

The AFL needs the game to grow in NSW and QLD as the two states combined equates to more than 1/2 of Australia's population. The AFL needs to engage fans in these two states to gain their share of the pie, or in this case the $2.5b TV rights deal they signed with Foxtel, Channel 7 and Telstra.

So they will give concessions to the Northern states to keep them strong. I just hope they don't neglect the traditional footy states to a point that they drive away disillusioned fans from these states that live and breathe footy.

Just read on the Draft Board someone mentioned they believe Riley Bonner's foot injury was a condition called "lisfranc foot" which on the write ups on the net looks to be a pretty serious condition to be starting an AFL career with. Can anyone confirm that is his actual foot injury diagnosis?

As one of the very few on the AFC Big Footy page to have actually seen Darcy Tucker play in the flesh a number of times my very strong opinion is that he is very capable of transitioning into the midfield rotations, one thing he most certainly does not lack is aggression.
Wasn't tucker touted as possible number 1 pick this time last year too??

Add Northern Territory to that list. So much talent but they need some players to aspire to and talk to in elite programs so they can stay in the system for longer. They need to add a Tasmanian and NT academy or add more funding to these states. Their getting left behind. I wouldn't mind say a Port Adelaide, Adelaide, West Coast or Fremantle academy for the NT. For Tasmania say North Melbourne, Melbourne or St Kilda.

He was in a full on fist fight with my mate at the game. I had organised an interview with him for after and I had a laugh about it with him. Quality bloke but he will start swinging Hodge style. Love it.

I never would have guessed that my desire to see a fair and even competition for all clubs irrespective of what state they hail from or what financial situation they find themselves in was actually just "small mindedness". But there you go, you learn something new everyday. Shame on me and my petty allegiances.
