It was more the trade period that 'screwed' us with this. GWS traded out their picks 7 & 8 meaning two extra teams came in ahead of us to trade players with picks GWS would have otherwise being using to secure their academy players. Not sure why so many people are worried about whether our picks are pushed back or not, whether they are nominally at 9 & 13 or 13 & 17 on the night is irrelevant, because we never really had access to the players that will push out those picks anyway.
Just read the report on Burton on afl.com.au. Sounds like a massive risk at that stage of the draft.
Ive seen him play previously and he is a real talent, but wow, he could still be a long way from getting even close to playing.
If we had a pick in the 20's I would take the punt on his talent, but at picks 9 & 13 I think the risk is far too great. There are highly talented almost can't miss players available there, so taking a huge risk like this seems unnecessary.

Francis and Burton please. Draft a couple of KPP in the rookie draft and go for a star mid next year.
I'd prefer a star mid this year to go along with one of those.
In reality we won't get Francis though and I don't think we should go Burton due to injury concerns.
I agree would be a great result even Milera for either of those, can defn see burton with our 2nd pick.Earlier today I tweeted some of the leading draft journos.
This was Emma's reply
It would be nice to be able to trade our later picks in for a top pick of our choosing every year wouldn't it!
This academy shit is a nonsense. Why don't everyone get to pluck the best talent in our states for a bunch of peanuts?
Sick to death of the leg ups! Have a draft, a salary cap and NO bullshit exceptions FFS!
These posts are back-to-front ...It's a joke and I think trading basketball cards was done better back in the early years of high school.
Possible but I think there'd be a few in front of him. I doubt he'd be a popular choice on here but neither was Talia. I wouldn't be unhappy.does anybody think wel take collins at 13?

Going places (2 part series with Cal Twomey) on Ryan Burton.
Part 2 tomorrow.
Burton's knee scares the shit out of me! The way Liptak described it as putting it back together as jigsaw puzzle is not a good sign. I would pass. Too great a risk at 9 and 13 IMHO. If he turns into a superstar, I am happy to relieve the club of copping abuse because the risk it far too great in the top 15. If he had a pick in the 20s I would take the punt but at 9 and 13, the risk is too great.
Given where we are at as a list and missing out on early picks for 2 years because of sanctions, we simply cannot afford to stuff up any of our 2 picks this year. It's just not an option at all for us.

One thing hed do would be put pressure on hartiganPossible but I think there'd be a few in front of him. I doubt he'd be a popular choice on here but neither was Talia. I wouldn't be unhappy.
I think everybody on here has francis as number 1. Number 2 is pretty much a blanket over burton, milera, oliver, mckay, etc. we couldnt be lucky enough to grab francis and burton surely..Francis and Burton please. Draft a couple of KPP in the rookie draft and go for a star mid next year.
Burton is firming in the draft order at the moment. Was talked about as a second rounder but his good combine has pushed him up. There is an actual chance he is gone before our pick 9.Just read the report on Burton on afl.com.au. Sounds like a massive risk at that stage of the draft.

Happy for that to be the case. Do not want us to take risk on him and if he is gone before 9, it means that someone will slide down to our pick. Dont let reality impact anything. I guess when we pick up Hogan and Omera next year we will be a top 4 lock.I believe those posters who said "the AFC won't get Parker" have missed your point.
That being that if you are drafting with need in mind, then it can no longer be seen in a yearly proposition.
As recruitment of players starts much earlier the AFC has to assess who it has in the trade pipeline and what role they are likely to fill in 12 months time. This will be dependant on how confident they are they will get their man.
For example: Parker, Neale or someone else, if they are confident they will fill that spot there is no need to pick Oliver (for example sake) at the expense of a kpp or other talented player they want.
On the flipside, if you believe in only drafting for best available talent this argument is superfluous and not for you.
Anyway Dayton shows your thinking about the long game, very thoughtful.
