Not sure why so many people are worried about whether our picks are pushed back or not, whether they are nominally at 9 & 13 or 13 & 17 on the night is irrelevant, because we never really had access to the players that will push out those picks anyway.

The only pick that matters from our end is GWS at #10 - we just have to ensure they burn that pick on an academy player, but given the wraps on Hopper & Kennedy in all likelihood that will have been sorted out for us by clubs with picks 1-8.

1. Weitering - carlton
2. Schache - brisbane
3. Mills* - sydney
4. Parish - melbourne
5. Hopper* - gws
6. Curnow - essendon
7. Mathieson - essendon
8. Kennedy* - gws
9. Francis - gold coast
10. Weideman - melbourne
11. Hipwood* - brisbane
12. Mckay - carlton
13. Milera - adelaide
14. Oliver - carlton
15. Balic - richmond
16. Keays* - brisbane
17. Burton/Collins? - adelaide

Just read the report on Burton on afl.com.au. Sounds like a massive risk at that stage of the draft.

Ive seen him play previously and he is a real talent, but wow, he could still be a long way from getting even close to playing.

If we had a pick in the 20's I would take the punt on his talent, but at picks 9 & 13 I think the risk is far too great. There are highly talented almost can't miss players available there, so taking a huge risk like this seems unnecessary.

It was more the trade period that 'screwed' us with this. GWS traded out their picks 7 & 8 meaning two extra teams came in ahead of us to trade players with picks GWS would have otherwise being using to secure their academy players.

So they played the system as well as one could have but as a result, we've become a bit of a loser from it as our picks have really moved down a couple of positions as a result of that.

13 will end up at about 18. So he's worth the punt there. No one else with that much Talent will be that far down the order

Francis and Burton please. Draft a couple of KPP in the rookie draft and go for a star mid next year.

I'd prefer a star mid this year to go along with one of those.

In reality we won't get Francis though and I don't think we should go Burton due to injury concerns.

Fingers crossed everyone else reckons he's a flight risk.

That said, I'm glad i'm not the only one that's not overly keen on selecting Burton due to injury.

It would be nice to be able to trade our later picks in for a top pick of our choosing every year wouldn't it!

This academy shit is a nonsense. Why don't everyone get to pluck the best talent in our states for a bunch of peanuts?

Sick to death of the leg ups! Have a draft, a salary cap and NO bullshit exceptions FFS!

It's a joke and I think trading basketball cards was done better back in the early years of high school.
These posts are back-to-front ...

The teams using the academies have to use up their top picks for points. They don't get to keep their round one pick for the draft and use all of the old picks to get the academy players.

They have to use their lowest, then their second lowest etc...

These teams trade out their low picks for later picks because they won't be drafting anyone with the early picks they will just be using them for points.

This new system is much much better. Of course we never get the benefit of the old system where you could pick up a gun for nothing ... but if we had an academy with a couple of good prospects - we would be trading pick 9 and 13 for some other club's later picks to use for points. We would not be getting an advantage like some seem to think.

Burton's knee scares the shit out of me! The way Liptak described it as putting it back together as jigsaw puzzle is not a good sign. I would pass. Too great a risk at 9 and 13 IMHO. If he turns into a superstar, I am happy to relieve the club of copping abuse because the risk it far too great in the top 15. If he had a pick in the 20s I would take the punt but at 9 and 13, the risk is too great.

Given where we are at as a list and missing out on early picks for 2 years because of sanctions, we simply cannot afford to stuff up any of our 2 picks this year. It's just not an option at all for us.

It is now healed, surely the medical department would be able to do scans and find out how well it healed, they would know if he is likely to have persisting issues or has made a full recovery with a fair amount of confidence. The risk would be if he had just done the injury and not knowing how it will heal, but it has now healed.

I agree. I think we want to ensure we get great value with these picks. I think I would rather get someone like Mathieson with 12 than Burton.

Plus he sounds like a bit of a tool in his video. Changing teams to Port!! ;-)

I think everybody on here has francis as number 1. Number 2 is pretty much a blanket over burton, milera, oliver, mckay, etc. we couldnt be lucky enough to grab francis and burton surely..

Burton is firming in the draft order at the moment. Was talked about as a second rounder but his good combine has pushed him up. There is an actual chance he is gone before our pick 9.

Happy for that to be the case. Do not want us to take risk on him and if he is gone before 9, it means that someone will slide down to our pick. Double win in my eyes.

I believe those posters who said "the AFC won't get Parker" have missed your point.

That being that if you are drafting with need in mind, then it can no longer be seen in a yearly proposition.
As recruitment of players starts much earlier the AFC has to assess who it has in the trade pipeline and what role they are likely to fill in 12 months time. This will be dependant on how confident they are they will get their man.

For example: Parker, Neale or someone else, if they are confident they will fill that spot there is no need to pick Oliver (for example sake) at the expense of a kpp or other talented player they want.

On the flipside, if you believe in only drafting for best available talent this argument is superfluous and not for you.

Anyway Dayton shows your thinking about the long game, very thoughtful.
Dont let reality impact anything. I guess when we pick up Hogan and Omera next year we will be a top 4 lock.

Can people stop saying Pick 9 and 13. We will end up with 13 and 18 by the look.
Maybe there are 8 players that would be taken ahead of Francis. There isnt 12.
Likewise Burton. Pick 13 maybe a risk. 18 all day everyday.
