Also mate, you can't hurt me, but these bully boy tactics stop others from joining in. Big footy is an opportunity for Crows supporters across the globe to come together and talk about our beloved club. You're a passionate guy, I get that but bring people with you mate. What you say make sense a lot of the time, you don't have to be a dick to make it better.

Yeah impressive

I love all draft profiles that include the words "Safe pick" ..."Solid" ...."neat" ......."flanker"

Watched him through the U18 championship ....yeah, not for me at all

Quote Jordan Canill
Overall, Balic is a neat prospect who has that fantastic spatial awareness and vision in traffic that very few do. He’s not very quick, but he thinks quickly and because of that awareness, has the ability to move through traffic. An impressive under 18s championships should see Balic selected in the first half of the draft.

I'd take Balic over Oliver, could be a good option at 13 if we get Francis.

Do you want a "Conca" type player ? ......or should we be aiming at game winners/ changers at #13?

could the same have been said for wines though?

Wines never had trouble making the vic country sides and was even in the AIS academy squad. That means he was still an elite footballer when he was the same size as his opponents, growing bigger just made him better. Oliver was an average footballer when he was the same size as his opponents, he just had a stand out 2015 when he was bigger.

Of course YOU would
Not really sure what gives with you. Maybe it's a massive insecurity complex but you don't need to try and constantly prove yourself. You just come off as a bit of a dick.

We've all got strong opinions and have the right to express them but maybe have a go at composing an argument rather than just attack people.

You're quickly alienating most of the people on here.

Can we all dial it down a notch?

I know there was real camaraderie on here when Trigg was CEO as we all had a common enemy. He's gone now so we're all back firing off in different directions. Can lead to friction.

Some spice is fun, too much gives people the shits

Not sold on Oliver, he looks like a kid who matured early giving him an advantage for one season, a lot of his highlights look like a kid out muscling his opponents, that will only translate to AFL if he turns into a Scott Thompson. There's likely a reason he couldn't make the vic country side. He looks like a second round pick to me.

I read where Oliver was injured and that is why he never made the U18 side. He came back and dominated.

Fantastic reasoning to draft a player ......BTW can he play football at all ?

They can all play football otherwise they wouldn't be considered up there in the draft.
But having a 17 year old kid show the professionalism required is a big fat tick in one of the many boxes the club will look at.

I would say that's actually a better reason than picking between two guys on their time trials which are a few seconds apart or their vertical leap being 1cm more.

if we can get two of

Francis
Milera
Weideman
McKay
Burton

I will be pretty happy.

Don't envy the job of the recruiters at all. But given they watch these guys all year and all we see are a few Youtube clips and some advice from other experts I am happy to back in who Sir Ogilvie picks.

Last time I had a melt down about not picking a player was Brad Ebert V Danger. Saw Brad play a lot of his predraft football. Danger was still the better pick. Ebert is a bit of a plodder and he could have ended up at Port anyway. He is Port Adelaide through and through. Was always going to end up there after WCE selected him.

I think team selection has been fine.

The problem with armchair critics complaining about selection is there's no downside for them. We'll never know what would have happened if someone did what they wanted, or if things would have been worse. All we know is our selectors made a choice and we didn't win.

Recruiting, frankly, has been tremendous. Player retention has been terrible and general Trigginess was shocking.

But drafting, trading and development looks excellent.

No team turns over enough of its list to need four or five new players every year - there will always be many draftees who can never make it due to weight of numbers.

Wow if you think team selection has been fine, then you're in the minority here. We're not talking about the retrospectoscope here, we're talking about selections that most thought would go wrong before the game and almost invariably did. Some real howlers. Was selecting Wright for 16 matches justified? His delisting proves it wasn't, and most here knew it at the time even if the selectors didn't.
There is a downside for supporters - we lose matches we could have potentially won.

As for the rest of your post, can't disagree - we've really lifted our game. And we're all armchair critics, thats the definition of a board like this.

A-grade dick posts time after time.
I got a weeks ban for less than this. Time for a mod to show some balls and slap a couple of points his way.

Yeah I get all that and well done (could have got more for danger but) and so they should, that's their job. But we still pull some howlers that any average fan could prospectively see is wrong, especially with team selection policies that have killed us in the last few years. Look I don't think we going to recruit another Meesen or Angwin or Joyce (twice!) coz we've tidied up the recruiting department in recent years, but do I have total faith in all of the club's decision making? - hell no.

There are two ideas that always float around before a draft.
  1. Recruiters are idiots
  2. Recruiters are geniuses
I think both are way way off.

Recruiters are idiots - all recruiting teams make mistakes. They all over-look superstars. They all pick players that don't make it.

Recruiters are geniuses - all recruiting teams pick gems out of the dust. They all find someone that others over-look.

In my mind, the recruiters have one of the least accountable positions in the AFL system. They can't really lose. If they pick a dud, it was the development team's fault (ie Melbourne) - or the player was not up to it (ie Tambling). If they pick a superstar from the bleachers - or sometimes from the first round if you are Geelong - you get held aloft as some god-like figure ... no reference to the player's efforts or the club's development efforts.

How quickly do we dismiss the players that do not make it as being good depth? How quickly do we hold up our successes as being because our recruiters are so clever?

I mean how on earth do you rate a recruiter? What scale do you use, what benchmark? Every team has different picks. Every team has different needs.

More and more the clubs and fans are seeing the draft as a lottery, and trading as the future. You draft potential - but you can trade in players that have some real-life experience in the job. It's like getting the #1 University Business Management graduate cf the guy that has run the local Car Yard successfully for 5 years. One seems like gold and the other ballast ... but in reality, actual proof that you can do the job should count far more than we give it credit.

Hell, you still will make mistakes - because people are complex - but in my mind there is way more risk in the draft (especially outside of the top 5) than people admit.

Ideal scenario would be Milera or Francis with pick 9. Either one would add some much needed polish to the side.

Pick 13 I would use on a high output midfielder. Brad Crouch is the only player capable of getting 35 touches in a game for us while Sloane and Douglas typically get 20-25 per game. Mathieson, Balic, Tucker or Oliver on the off chance he slides would be the best bet.

Cole is one who doesn't have the bigfooty fanfare but I like the look of him. Looks a good all round prospect.
