List Mgmt. Draft Watch 2015

Can't help but feel that Cam has gone the old "will pick SA players" approach with us. Milera makes sense and he rightly point out that overlooking Curnow will take some balls.

I have voiced my concerns on Burton a number of times. He scares the shit out of me and I wouldn't have the guts to pick him. Talent wise be is a steal at 9 let alone 13 but that knee worries me in a major way and we simply cannot afford to get this draft wrong. We simply MUST pick 2 stars and 200 game players.

If we draft Burton I will trust the rectuiting guys but it doesn't mean that I won't have heart in my mouth every time he flies up for a mark or gets tackled. But if it pays off **** ME.....JACKPOT!

The fact that Burton's medical has not made any waves is good. Geez if Francis, Milera and H. McKay gone he would have to be under strong consideration to be our pick @9. If we passed and he was still there @13, he has to be the pick IMO. However, if we take H. McKay I want his twin for the 2nd pick.

Just re watched all of Mileras highlights - yes please.

Highlights make him look like a pretty ordinary kick. Plenty of good work with his hands in the package I saw, but he couldn't hit a target by foot to save himself, his kicks to lead up targets were all too high and long, or half volleys.

It's pretty obvious why; football ability is only half the story.

Clubs take sometimes 4 recruiters and even a pyschologist to interview players. They interview their parents as well to evaluate their upbringing. Everything matters.

I wouldn't be touching Curnow with a first round pick regardless of his talent. Guy must be a certified douchebag and/or dumbass.
Serious question! Did you ever do anything stupid at 18?!

I sure the **** did but I would hate it if that was held against me now and I certainly wouldn't do it now.

Fact is he is young, stupid, and obviously panicked when he got pulled over. It's hardly a hanging offence and I bet that this incident makes him much stronger a better, more mature kid. Sure as a responsible adult it's a huge NO NO as we thing of the consequences that his actions could have led to but I am willing to bet that a large percentage of 18 year olds got on the piss and got behind the wheel but never got caught. He did and all of a sudden he is bigger trouble than he was 3 days ago!

Please!

Oh cmon ....you saying you're an Angel ? ......never made a mistake ?

If that's the worst thing he does .....draft him tomorrow IMO

Like me at 20 after a few Tequila shots down the bay .....being responsible, I parked the car 500mtrs from Keswick barricks to have a rest ......trouble was i parked middle lane of Anzac Highway

That's the story i can tell .....also let me tell you it had no impact on my Business life

So he'd be the best kick in our midfield then?

Are you talking about refusing a breath test the week before the draft?
No, but i spent the night in the same accommodation .....does that count

Sorry I but I don't want us wasting one of our earliest picks in recent times on a kid who can't even keep it together for his draft week.
Oh you do-gooder ......you know that approach would wipe out half this draft class

And did you want Harley Benell ? .......i think you did

So if we got Curnow could we get Macca and Betts to mentor him?
No ....he'll have a personal escort for his entire career off grounds

What utter stupidity ......what makes some views even more ridiculous is if Sloane did it, we'd all, and i mean all, would find an excuse for him .....but not a potential draftee

At the risk of copping abuse from those with different views, here are my thoughts on our current list and our greatest needs in the draft.

I am not keen to draft a one paced, inside midfielder. I can't see any Judds or Dangerfields in the draft with the capacity to win lots of stoppages but also have explosive pace. Last year our preferred inside mids in order were Thommo, Dangerfield, Dougie, Sloaney, Matty Crouch and CEY. As others have pointed out, winning the stoppages was not a good indicator of our success winning the match.

IMHO our 2 greatest weaknesses in 2015 were outside midfielders and rebounding defenders. Once Matty Jaensch did his knee, we were forced to used Brodie Smith and/or Hendo in the back six. Luke Brown is a lockdown defender and Rory Laird was excellent as the extra man in defence. Perhaps we drafted Hampson, Seedsman and Menzel because we intend to use Smith or Laird in the midfield. (Just quietly, I think Rory Laird could be a superb inside mid).

My priority of needs is
1) Speedy ball carrier with good disposal skills who can play as rebounding defenders or outside midfielders (Parish, Francis, Milera, Bonner, Tucker, Hibberd)
2) Marking Forwards (Schache, Weideman, H McKay, Curnow, Burton)
3) Key Defenders (Weitering, Collins, B McKay)

IMHO we don't need
1) Extra inside mids unless they have other strings to their bow
2) Small Forwards
3) Small defenders

I'd like Francis and Milera but we are unlikely to get Parish or Francis and I am not convinced Milera will be available at pick 9.
So.... I think the most likely outcome is McKay or Curnow at pick 9 and Tucker, Hibberd or Bonner (my choice) at pick 13.

But I'd love to be wrong and get Milera at pick 9.

Of course, the reason they wore the green vest so often is because the gulf in talent between them is as wide as the Pacific Ocean.
Perhaps if you read the article by Hamish Ogilvie put up a couple of days ago on the AFC website you might understand why I and quite a few others think your judgement of Matt Crouch going forward is premature especially given this will be the first time he has EVER done a full and proper pre-season..... all going well.

We've all done these things but we aren't modern AFL footballers. AFL clubs want "elite" attitudes and work ethic, particularly ours.

I sure as hell did many stupid things when I was younger but the timing in this case is what makes it worse. 4 days before he becomes an AFL player he's drink driving...

It will absolutely affect his draft position which will vindicate my argument.

Not really. His draft position won't effect his career. If he goes on to have the career he's capable of, then his draft position won't matter. Except to the clubs who overlook him.

given some of the stupid stuff you post you're pretty harsh on other types of stupid :p :D

The thing that has me a bit reluctant about Milera is he doesn't actually look that quick. Pace looks average at best to me and maybe not quite that quick.

Elusive and hard to tackle, but our midfield needs genuine pace and I'm not sure Milera (or anyone else who's likely to be available at 9) has it.

Am I wrong? brucetiki you would've seen more of him than anyone else here. What do you think?

Oh good, you missed my point.

I meant when Curnow doesn't go top 5 it shows that other recruiters have been put off which matches my concerns about him. I'm not saying he won't be a superstar, I'm saying he's now a risk.

Also, I love how you follow your insults with a selection of smiley faces. You are the coolest... ;)

Are you kidding?

He had a disposal efficiency of 84% in the champs and then looked just as effective (or more so) at senior level. I reckon it even shows in the highlights.

You seem to be incredibly negative towards anyone under 25 yrs of age.

He would clearly be one of the best kickers in the draft.

Evasiveness and agility along with decent/above average pace is way more important than genuine straight line pace imo.

Look at Robbie Gray, he isn't quick at all, but he is so evasive and hard to catch. Milera would definitely have quicker straight line speed than Gray too.

Straight line speed can be a touch overrated unless they actually play fast. ie Brodie Smith didn't actually test that well in the 20m sprint but he plays fast because he takes off and has the willingness to take the game on. Where as someone like Hendo tests really quick, but he doesn't play quick so you rarely see it or benefit from it.
