Well I suppose if three academy players go before pick 9, we get to pick the 12th and 16th best rated players.
I guess one way of looking is that the academy players have never been in the live draft pool ....makes you feel better

How is it that we are getting better draft players from interstate than Victoria ?

Victoria IMO is in a bit of trouble .....not producing quality in Metro area

Speaking from experience, some doctors are more incompetent than you give them credit for. Although, I believe Liptak did Burton's surgery. He is pretty with-it.
So does anyone know or reported what Burtons chances of a 100% recovery is like?

At least he was doing "some" testing at the combine ....good sign

Surely worth a punt then at 13
He has to be firmly on our radar, and with Adelaide being very well situated to monitor his recovery and progress from his badly broken leg we may be in the box seat with Ryan I feel.

Something that hasn't been mentioned to my knowledge, there is a strong link to the AFC already.....Ryan is the son of former North Adelaide gun Craig Burton who has worked for the AFC and was our runner for a while too.

North Adelaide Premiership Player in 1987 and 1991, Craig commenced his employment with the Adelaide Foothall Club in 2005, assuming the position of Manager - Innovations, Systems and Projects. Coming from Coopers Brewery, one of Craig's main duties with the club is to oversee the Crows Foundation. Craig is currently studying a Master of Sports Administration having already completed a Bachelor of Management - Marketing. His vast sporting achievements include two years as Under 19 Coach for the Glenelg Football Club, former runner for the Crows and a life member of the Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club.

No bruise Burton  .....as a Westie supporter he made us so angry

That said ....if 100% would be very happy with Burton

Burton over Milera IMO ......if 100%

So if we take Burton, who would he replace in the team? Lynch?
We're taking best available .....if we had Gunston now do you reckon we could squeeze him in?

So if we take Burton, who would he replace in the team? Lynch?
I'm thinking either of these could be our 2017/18 lineup if both 9 and 13 are developed well. I'm assuming we take one of Burton/Francis (if available) and one of Hibberd/Tucker. If we take Burton, I believe we'll plan to develop Menzel into a wingman.

With Burton:

B: Laird, Talia, Brown
HB: Smith, Lever, Hibberd/Tucker
C: Menzel, Sloane, Knight
HF: Burton, Walker, Lynch
F: Betts, Jenkins, Cameron
R: Jacobs, MCrouch, BCrouch
I/C: Hampton, CEY, O'Brien, Gore

With Francis:

B: Laird, Talia, Brown
HB: Francis, Lever, Hibberd/Tucker
C: Smith, Sloane, Knight
HF: Menzel, Walker, Lynch
F: Betts, Jenkins, Cameron
R: Jacobs, MCrouch, BCrouch
I/C: Hampton, CEY, O'Brien, Gore

Certainly like the balance of the 2nd team more.

So although we have Pick 9 due to the Academy picks our "top 10" pick still won't be up on the stage getting presented with their Guernsey by our coach?? :(

Speaking from experience, some doctors are more incompetent than you give them credit for. Although, I believe Liptak did Burton's surgery. He is pretty with-it.

I go the the same clinic that Liptak works for, first time went with one doctor there and he (not Liptak) was a stuck up idiot that did a bad job, 4 years later going to get my knees repaired again with a different doctor at the same clinic and he is great (so far lol).
So it's random what specialist you get and how good they are, even in the same clinic lol. But I here very good thingss about Liptak though...

So if we take Burton, who would he replace in the team? Lynch?

Have McGovern there too who if he gets his body right could easily push for selection in 2016. Question is where, especially with the addition of Menzel as well. Maybe Gov might get a gig in the backline as an intercept marking utility of some sort similar to his brother? Frees up the likes of Smith and Seedsman even more... and McGovern would certainly be the better defender of the lot with his aerial prowess.

Burton and Francis are fantastic prospects, don't get me wrong. Undoubted natural talents, and if you're going down the best available route then you sure as hell snap them up.

As to where they fit into the team in the near future is a very good question and should imo be a bigger topic of discussion. I sort of look at it as who the potential draftee could replace in the next 2-3 years in the team. Francis could very easily push into the midfield and play a Pendlebury/Mundy role meaning that the next midfielder moves down he chain 1 spot. We have always lacked that 1 tall midfielder and I think he is more than capable of playing this role. Douglas is the one that pops into my mind here, obviously being the next oldest midfielder in our side behind Thommo. Francis moves into the midfield potentially freeing up a Sloane or Crouch (just as example) to a more outside role.

As for Burton if we drafted him, he would most likely play as a 3rd tall ala Gunston, but where does that leave Lynch and Menzel to a degree? I guess Eddie is the other big one here who is getting on. Maybe Burton plays as our utility forward alongside the 3 talls and Menzel rolls over to a small forward role alongside Cameron?

The fact that all of Seedsman, Hampton and Menzel are 186+cm makes it quite interesting as to where these utility types, who are just a tad too small to be considered KPP, actually fit into our side.

Pyke loves his versatility in players as we all know. I tell you what if we did select Francis at 9 and Burton at 13 purely as an example, then we would have it in spades. Hampton, Menzel, Seedsman, Smith, McGovern and then Francis and Burton.... all very capable of performing multiple roles.

Yes they will .....the Academy players will still be picked in draft order, but the points required to get the player is determined by which club in draft order puts in a bid

GWS first Academy potential pick .....#10
Sydney first Academy potential pick .....#33
Brisbane first Academy potential pick .....#38
Gold Coast first Academy potential pick .....#6

Actual draft order doesn't change .....unless 2nd & 3rd picks are required for points .....in which case those picks are pushed to the back of the draft

The AFL will radically restructure the development of young football talent across Australia with the creation of club-zoned multicultural and Indigenous academies.

In a move that has been viewed as a precursor to the return of club-branded development zones, the competition is expected to allocate a significant portion of the 2017-2022 broadcast rights money in a bid to attract under-represented talented boys into the game.

The new academies, based upon the successful football factories in the northern markets first pioneered by the Sydney Swans, form a major part of Gillon McLachlan's master plan to restructure the game at grass roots and lower levels of the competition.

Actually, discussing this with Scorpus, they may have changed the rules for this year on so that matches will actually slot in where the bid is - so if we bid for Hopper, GWS will match and get pick 9.

Serious .....so Sydney at pick 33 goes on stage if top 10 bid?

That's farcical ......and reeks of Northern states promotion over promoting the game

Anywhere reported?

Love it. Help expose those Indigenous and Multicultural talents is a great idea. Helps boys with preparation for the elite level and probably give some life counselling if needed from other Multicultural/Indigenous talents in the AFL.
Agree ....IMO the U17 selections ...Crouch. Omera, Hogan ....all benefitted from training a year without being allowed to play AFL

Love Academy concept for all clubs ......great for game development, particularly in country areas

Liptak did my knee a few weeks back, much better surgeon than crumber off the pack. Did a year or two as a locum down here and people can't speak highly enough of him

no he will I'm pretty sure, academy kids taken with picks outside the top 10 don't go up there

GWS is probably a better example to use (as based on the AFL's phantom draft guide, GC don't have a very highly rated draft prospect) but the important thing is teams with picks 1 to 9 must have a go at bidding for Hopper rated a pick 5 prospect.

If not, then GWS could use their pick 10 to pick another top prospect - say Burton or some other gun. Then if Carlton use pick 11 to bid for Hopper, GWS can then match that bid with their next picks (to make up the points) and also get Hopper at pick 11. So instead of getting only one top draft prospect, they would get 2! I think they have enough first round picks already FFS.

So in reality we can exclude the highly rated academy kids from our wishlists but we got to make sure GWS (& GC, Brisbane) use their highest picks for their desired draft kids).
That's why we will bid on hopper at 9. Guaranteed.
