The bolded are not true HBF's. I would also argue that Wigg is best played as a back pocket rather than a HBF/wingman. Seedsman is no guarantee to succeed with us, either.

I tend to look at needs by skill rather than by position, anyway. Tucker has speed, agility and an accurate kick... do we not need that?
I'll take any money anyone wants to put up .....we will not take Tucker !

Francis = Goddard

Goddard is not structural .....and is not a game winner like a Hird

So the question is can Francis become a Hird type player ?

BTW i believe Goddard was mis - coached most of his career being allowed to play loose man type roles to bring into play his elite kicking / decision making

For about 4 games Goddard played FF for St Kilda & was superb .....then they put him back as the quarter back
Wait and see, I guess. Ftr Francis seems to play in the same style as Goddard, but I'm not sure they are the exact same player just yet...

Weid won't slide. KPF's are becoming more and more like gold in these drafts.
I agree .....but been injured a lot .....has poor endurance ....but a great contested mark in his family tradition

Just expect him to slide IMO

Oliver is a gun. Definitely wouldn't be surprised to see him go inside the top 10. Essendon and Carlton are the big chances to take him, IMO.

Looking more and more likely that Francis will fall...
Depends if we show much interest in Oliver at 9. If Carlton know we won't take Olivef at 9 they can take him at 11 and take McKay or Francis at 8 .

You'd think we would, unless we have a Neale-type in our sights next year, which I doubt.

Then why did we interview him twice?
Means nothing ......we've taken players b4 we've hardly spoken to .....we keep our cards very close to our chest and could be sending out smoke signals

It's a possibility. Just my opinion really, wouldn't rule out Tucker at all yet. We are no guarantee to take a structural player if we're keeping our cards close to our chest...

Not even in the same stratosphere as Bont ......Milera if anything is the most hyped player in the last 4 weeks .....

It depends of course on availability of players at our picks .....but i still believe we need the contested inside mid and the KPF

Milera is not the right fit unfortunately .......but it depends on how the cards fall on the day

For me if a choice and the guy is 100% fit .....Burton over Milera on the basis that Burton is an excellent mark
You keep saying this but I couldn't disagree more. He can play forward, wing, half back and can play all 3 roles with damaging effect. He has elite disposal, decision making, pace, evasiveness and also has xfactor.

He has performed at every level and in fact is getting better. He probably played better in the SANFL than he did the champs.

Now I'd probably take Francis ahead of him for us but Milera will be a gun IMO.

It truly was an unbelievable defense.

Add in Johncock as the elite small defender who would also attack and McLeod & Goodwin as elite half backs.

They were all pretty much all-Australian quality playing in the back 6 at once.

We had a very good midfield too. If only we had a top 8 quality forward line. If we weren't against trading in that era (which admittedly wasn't a big thing across the afl), we could have addressed our forward line and maybe snagged a flag.

We were good enough.
McLeod and Goodwin well and truly playing midfield by the time Bock and Rutten came along but yeah, great defence.

Understand Tucker has some good attributes .....but honestly looking at our list makeup, where is our need for his type of player? .....where?

We're losing Dangerfield this year, Thompson next year .......so you want another outside player in preference to replacing these two?

We have STILL a thinness in KPF ......given 3 years development, you want to overlook for another outside player?

We've been criticized for being too inside .....this has been corrected ...but you really have to be careful of having too many outside players on your list .....high failure rate in drafts and high failure rate in finals

It always bemuses me how, despite the recruiting staff having watched these blokes actually play real football all season, that at the end of the season some players rocket up the rankings due to their Combine testing.
Oliver shooting up the rankings is on the back of his Morrish medal win after not making the Vic Country side, not Combine results. Looks pretty handy but don't think he's the guy for us.

Pundits have him everywhere from 5 to 20s.

The rankings aren't done by the recruiters though, players shooting up the rankings is more due to journalists finding out who recruiters are keen on. They find out recruiter from 'team with a top 10 pick' is keen on Pdub so suddenly Pdub is shooting into the top 10, when recruiters have considered Pdub a top 10 pick for 18months.

Not arguing he won't .......don't confuse what i think we'll take as meaning others are not going to be good players

You've said yourself you'd take Francis over Milera ......it's all about preference of one player over another in the context of list management / needs / Availability

Players with injuries slide from the phantom drafts, I think Wiederman and Burton will both slide, we will end up with one of them. Will be interesting if both Wiederman and Francis are available at 9.

I think if we walk away with collins and tucker it will be very underwhelming. Meltdown. Im starting to believe we have a genuine chance at grabbing francis! Apart from weitering, schache, parish, weideman and curnow who will most probably be gone id rank the next top 10 in preference:
Francis
Milera
Burton
Oliver
Mckay
Balic
Bonner
Tucker
Collins
Ah chee
How about Mathieson? Kicking not great but absolute ball magnet in close. Probably a Matt crouch clone though - don't need two of him.

Thing is I don't think they do rocket up the rankings. They rocket up the rankings of amatuer draft watchers and the media, but such testing would hold minimal value for recruiters. Regularly you'll see a guy rocket up the "pre draft" rankings thanks to a draft combine, only to slip on draft day.

Probably the most important part of the combine for clubs are the interviews, the rest will just give the clubs up to date raw values on all players, to confirm/deny certain questions they may have.

At the end of the day, combine may push or drop players 1-2 spots on a list, but no way players shoot up/down the rankings as the media would have you believe.

I reckon 13 will be used on either Mathieson or burton depending on whether we want to risk it with the latter.

Surely that's his strength? Versatility.
Can be a strength ....can be a weakness

If you're talking James Hird ......take him now!!!!!

If You're talking Goddard .....you'd have to think about it over other options

These are the discussions AFL recruiters are discussing with Francis

We have Sloane and Brad Crouch as our two main inside players, at the moment. For the purposes of this, I'm saying that BCrouch has no further injury issues. There, we have two elite players. We also have MCrouch, CEY and Gore (who I think could surprise many) coming through the ranks, not to mention Grigg and Lyons (albeit I don't think they will make it). We have Smithers as our sole great outside player. We have Knight, Hampton and Rat coming through the ranks. That means we have much less outside midfield depth than inside, 7 inside players to 4 outside - five if you count Seed, who I see as a half-back. I don't think adding a Tucker type is going to hurt that much?
