I know the season hasn't even started yet, but going through our list I can't help but wonder if come the next draft, would it be better for our club to draft the next best player or the next best Backman. As good as Gibbsy will be, would having a ready made CHB in Hansen be better for our club.

It seems that the talen from about pick 20 onwards won't differ too much from pick to pick so i think that is when you start to see teams go for players more suited to their needs.
With the first few picks i think that you should always go for the best player.

I honestly believe the club will go after a forward with their first pick. Definately need a strong tall CHF now that Kennedy has been traded away.

Waite, Jamison, Setanta, and T-bird will be very solid for us this year.

But in answering your thread, i think it depends. We were right in drafting Gibbs, as at the time we were lacking quality players altogether.

I think next year would be a perfect time to look at drafting for need with our draft picks.

You always have to go for talent first. I liken it to adding to your share portfolio. If you are in a position to acquire quality blue chip shares over more risky investments, then its a no-brainer. But when those blue chip shares start drying up, you can start to look at other more risky options that help to even out your portfolio. There are no doubts some of those more risky shares can produce massive dividends - although it is rare. But you always seem to hear about these ones! I liken it to some of my gambling addict mates. They tell me how much $ they won last Wed. night at the Casino. But they never tell me about what happened Tues., Fri. and Sat. You'd think they only ever won!? Like they have cracked some code or something??

Anyway, my point is, think of players as an investment in your club. When you take this (less emotional) view you'll start to realise that grabbing talent first must be your first priority.

Did I miss something?

Hansen has done what exactly?

I see the debate over whether we should have taken Gumbleton has died in the arse.........;)

Having said that, next draft I would like to see us take the best available KPP, pref a CHB.:thumbsu:

I rated Hansen before he was drafted and I still rate Hansen now. I wanted us to draft him ahead of Gibbs at the time I'll admit, but I don't see how anything Hansen has done since being drafted has indicated that he's a long term CHB or FB, or make him ny better in that role than Jamison, Setanta, Austin or Bower who are all our long term options for that position.

Dangers of listening to Mojo31 :p;)

Gibbs is a Rolls Royce :thumbsu:

A little bit of that but also me being impressed with his workrate, his marking and athletism. Also I believed that we needed a superstar defender more than a midfielder (at the time). Funny how 12 months later I was saying the exact opposite :)

Best available is what you should be drafting. Isnt one of the reasons we drafted Livingston as we had just lost Hamill to the Saints and looked to him as being a replacement key forward even though after he was drafted they only used him in the back half?

How did you rate Hansen? I sure didn't. This is the perfect example on why you shouldn't listen to the news or read the papers and get out there and make your own judgement. Hansen looked like a spud during the carnival and from the 2 TAC cup games I seen he wasn't all that flash.

What I struggle to comprehend is that how can someone get AA U18s selection having got 13 possies in the 1st game, and did some ok things, 2nd game get knocked out in the 1st quarter, and the 3rd game which was a hell of a wet day, barely get a touch of the pill?

When we hear news we should always wait for the sacrament of confirmation. Gibbs was miles ahead everybody else during the carnival, he just needs to back himself and believe in his own true ability.

Nice work.

I once watched Hansen win a marking contest at CHB, kicked it to a teammate, and then sprinted 50+ metres up the ground to CHF where he offered the same teammate a target and took a second contested mark. The kid has a freakish workrate.

I saw Hansen play quite a few TAC matches back in the day and he was always excellent and probably the most consistent performer for the Power. Exceptional set of hands, strong workrate. Played forward or back with ease. Definitely think he'll be a player within a few years and always rated him highly going into that draft. If we had pick 2 that year i'd have wanted him for sure.
