Eagles tackling has been a part of our game that really needs some attention for some time now. I think only once this year we have won that statistic......
Sat nite, Hawks 79 tackles, WCE 52 tackles.
Priddis = 10 tackles. 20 f'ing % of the WC tackle tally.
I did not watch the game on Saturday nite, but can someone reassure me that the Eagles really are not THAT bad at putting pressure on the opposition ball carriers plaeas....
What are other peoples thoughts please.
regards.

we've never been a great tackling side, i reckon the injection of players like scott selwood and luke shuey in years to come will help with that.

for the time being, the only real tacklers we have are stinga and priddis. im fairly sure i saw a stat that said LeCras has only laid 2 tackles this year...now i know it might not be his main job to lay shitloads of tackles, but 2 tackles in 5 games is pretty piss poor.

our forward line pressure is my main concern, aaron davey would slot in nicely.

I actually had a look at that stat a couple of days ago as well. We are 16th in the league for tackles.:o

We dont seem to be as bad as that, I think we are putting pressure on the ball carrier without actually laying the tackle if that makes sense. Crowding the opposition and not giving them space, maybe that goes with the zoning game we have been playing this year?

Sorry but we are, we need to do a training session with the Western Force

I think that applies to what Anti was saying about LeCras' low tackle count; I actually think his defensive pressure up forward is very good, and I see him at least attempting to lay many more tackles than his stats this year would have you believe.

I don't think it has anything to do with our ability to lay a good tackle. It's our attitude towards putting in the effort of running and chasing and doing the hard work. Our boys are just lazier than the rest in this regard IMO.

IMO there is a problem with technique in the tackle. Too often we're getting fended off or falling off players.

My thoughts exactly. In general, I don't think we're too bad at getting to the player and getting our hands on them, but too often, its completely ineffective as players just fall off their target and/or are easily brushed off. Its bloody frustrating to watch!

Perhaps we do have a problem there that needs fixing with regards to tackling technique. But to be coming 16th in the tackle category suggests a broader problem.
If we're last in the competition for tackles, I doubt that technique is the problem more so than effort and attitude. The problem with missed tackles hasn't really stood out thus far.

That is so true, I can't think of anyone else. From, what I have seen Masten tries but thats about it.

then maybe we should get some blokes in that DO tackle...davis 11 tackles on the weekend and mcnamara the same. cmon woosha!

agree with some of those names, davis provides dash and a strong tackle.

we do have some younger blokes like cockie, naitanui, shuey, selwood, masten and jmac who are all hard at it tacklers, 1 or 2 of them should come into the side later in the year to provide pressure on opposition ball carriers.

i also forgot adam selwood in my 1st post, i'd rate him as a decent tackler.

what dissapoints me most is that every team has one player who usually runs someone down from behind at least once a game which delivers major momentum shifts. (rioli, daveys, thomas/campbell, hahn, davis and hooper etc) yet we have no one. we need that perceived pressure. naitanui will offer us that, big time.

i expect to see many a run-down at subiaco oval for years to come.

It pisses me off so much when players miss tackles. So often I see opposition players running around Eagles player because they can't tackle them. How hard is it to just attack their hips and stop getting fooled by their upper body!!!!!

We have allowed our players to think it is ok to simply corrale the ball carrier. So often I see an eagles player herd up an opposition player on the boundary line.

I know through my experiences on a footy field I'd rather have a player corrale me then steam into my hips.

Bizzare to see last so long.

It is more about our gameplan.

We do exert a fair amount of defensive pressure with the zone, by blocking space and corralling players. This in turn allows us to force turn overs.

LeCras chases the ball carrier alot, but the reality is that using a midfield zone forces our players into certain formations and positions and to not man up.

We use this instead of a man on man method where we would use a high amount of tackles to force turnovers and gain control of the ball.

As the players build match fitness and become used to the gameplan, I am sure we will see the team physically impose itself more.

For the moment we are doing ok, where the focus on workrate should be running out games and players getting back into position fast enough.

last in tackles. that's not a good stat unless your geelong and it's because you've had so much of the fricken ball every game that you don't have the opportunities to lay tackles.

i've seen rounds 1, 2 and 4 and watcching 5 on the replay today but i thought our tackling this year had improved a lot but obviously my impressions were a bit off there.

Yeah, i am not a real fan of LeCras defensive pressure...Lynch is good to lay pressure but he isnt as quick to put it on well. Remember when Phil Matera was our crummer? He was awesome at putting forward tackles on. I think LeCras needs to work on his D a bit more.
