13 WEST COAST EAGLES

Charlie Constable

General Defender / Inside Midfielder ( Sandringham Dragons / Vic Metro )

18/05/1999 | 191cm 86.1 kg

Tall midfielder who although not overly quick is a capable inside midfielder and the reason for my Choice at Pick 13 .
Through the TAC Cup 2017 season Constable became known as a good clearance and contested ball winner something that WCE are crying out for and when the |Scribes start comparing him to Patrick Cripps well its easier to draft at Pick 13 then perhaps trading in Patrick Cripps for two first rounder so really we have won already . Constable missed a large chunk of footy in 2016 due to injury but is over those concerns .

PROS
Good Footy Smarts

Good Team player

Pick 15 - Brisbane - Lochie O'Brien
Lochie+O+Brien+TAC+Cup+Rd+18+Gippsland+Power+QK9f28TPfdIl.jpg

Rightly or wrongly I think Brisbane consider themselves to have decent KPP stock, sufficient to use their second pick on another mid. Lochie O'Brien is arguably the next best mid available. O'Brien is versatile and can be thrown on the outside, down back and can also hit the scoreboard. O'Brien is reknown for his precise kicking which, after watching Brisbane a bit this year, this is something they really lack. O'Brien is not going to have too much impact at the contested ball but can wreak havoc on the outside of a stoppage and will compliment Davies-Uniacke really well.

Carbine Chaos you're up again.

Considered a needs based selection but decided that was silly to do so early. So, best available...

Welcome to the Western Bulldogs, HUNTER CLARK.

Hunter+Clark+J-rjD2P6mlSm.jpg

Club: Dandenong Stingrays
Height: 186cm
Weight: 79kg

There is a lot to like about Hunter. He is a hard and tenacious player with a nice burst of pace and a good size. Some question his foot skills but it sounds as though he has always prided himself as somewhat dual sided, so I suppose the proof will be in that pudding when he makes the step up. He can play off a back flank or through the guts and is very much an inside-outside prospect, which makes him all the more enticing.

Pick 19: Gold Coast Suns
Nathan Murphy - Medium Utility (Brighton Grammar/Sandringham Dragons)
15/12/1999,188.3cm, 79.9kg
upload_2017-10-23_10-55-7.png
Looking at Nathan Murphy, you could look at him and ask yourself if there was anything he couldn’t do. He is a gifted sportsman: in the Victorian junior cricket squad (along with Will Sutherland), a star at Brighton Grammar with both cricket and football, he has been a stand out for the Sandingham Dragons since completing his BGS responsibilities and is still diligently studying. In addition he is also a keen surfer and very competent golfer. Why would he not enjoy life on the Gold Coast?

Nathan had a different 2017 compared to the other top 20 picks. He has only recently committed to AFL turning his back on Victorian cricket. Murphy spent the first half of the season playing for Brighton Grammar and then made his 2017 debut with the Dragons in the middle of the year. As a result of his cricket, he has been conflicted and never been in a position to undertake a full pre-season. His endurance is pretty decent even without the pre-season work coming 8th in the 2km trial at the Combine.

He is a utility player that started the season in defence and dominating with his intercept marking (he reads the play extremely well and marks very strongly. He moved forward in the later part of the season and really impacted the scoreboard. His improvement saw him included in the All Star game on grand final and he looked at home. He has been labelled as a “natural footballer”.

With a couple of pre-seasons, Murphy should be able to go into the middle and be that big bodied midfielder. He will also bring versatility being able to drop back and play the attacking 3rd tall defender as well as going forward and be a serious threat aerially and hitting the scoreboard.

The Suns will likely only have 3 picks in the main draft and they have an academy ruckman in Crossley. They hold picks 19, 41 (412 pnts), 50 (273 pnts) and 54 (220 pnts). Realistic expectations are that there will be no bids on Crossley inside the top 30 and there are 905 in the next 3 picks to more than cover him. That meant the opportunity to go best available and I chose to go for the what I thought was the highest risk reward pick knowing they are very well placed in so many other areas and their spine is strong.

Over to you ArdentEagle

Still a few kids left on the board that I'm suprised didn't go in the first round !

Big surprise for mine was how far Stephenson slipped. I doubt he passes north's pick 4 next month.

Makes for an interesting 2nd round though!

Bit of a surprise yeh. If Gold Coast had of held 2 I wouldn’t have minded seeing them bite the bullet on him. Would be a real point of difference to there forward line.

A gamble obviously with bankable mids like LDU, Dow and Cerra available and having lost Ablett but it didn’t eventuate that they held pick 2 anyway.

Okay - Now I'm going to pick best available.
I have a couple of people on my list for this pick but I've gone for this player because he's as close to a sure thing that you can get.
Too early for some...Maybe. Not too early for me.

(Will do all my write ups/reasoning over the weekend)

Pick 21 - Tim Kelly
