Tell him he's got 2 options:

1. Pay out rest of his contract so he's out of pocket probably a million or more
2. Stay and complete his contract

None of this live in Melbourne crap which will affect the teams performance

You do realise 1. is actually illegal don't you?

And illogical anyway. (He could say fine I'll stay only to knock off early jump on a plane back to Melbourne not show up to work in which case he is fired anyway and avoids any payout).

Unless you have a non compete clause there isn't a lot West Coast can do unfortunately. Not like a player where the Eagles can say we are keeping you on the list and you need to stand out (Cam McCarthy style) or play or say we are not trading you so off to Carlton you go, he is actually an employee. And if he doesn't want to be there you are out of luck. (And West Coast have every right to be pissed but this happens in the workforce).

Actually most workplace contracts will have some sort of compensation for quitting early. He wouldn't be made to repay it all but he could very well be made to give the eagles some form of compensation
Most likely if he doesn't give notice he will lose leave, entitlements, holiday pay etc. There (hopefully) is not a workplace tribunal in the land that tells someone you have to pay your employer for not working for them. In essence they are charging you and providing nothing. Theft in other words. Granted it (maybe, I don't know the circumstances) looks like poor form but what can West Coast do if he wants out?

Well wherever/whatever that job, if it is with another AFL club then I would not have a problem with the Eagles holding him to his contract. They basically extended his career and eased him into coaching - sucks for him to just leave and the Eagles time, effort and money benefits some other club.

Unless there is a non compete clause not much they can do to stop him. Seems strange to just up and leave, especially when they are right in the hunt. Clarko will coach 2 more years anyway then he could take over if that's what he wants. Far better learning in Perth and at a different club then just going back to what he already knows. Plus like Dew/Hardwick/Longmire your credentials go up if you're an assistant and part of a coaching team at a Premiership club. (Especially if you've played in one somewhere different).

Why does he want to leave anyway? Disagreement, scandal or (imo) homesickness/go home factor. Again feel for the Eagles in this point but not much they can do about Perth's location. Just have to suck it up unfortunately and try and get someone better.

many workplace contracts have clauses where the employee has to pay the employer when they leave. This is normally to do with minimum time worked before quitting or minimum notice before leaving. Given mitchell would have signed a contract for a specified working term, i wouldnt be surprised if there is some similar clause. i know because my partner was potentially facing that exact situation.

But then I'm sure AFL says no you can't go to another team because of what you've done you can't be involved with AFL until that contract ends

Surely when someone's on the sort of money Mitchell would be on, and when he's such an integral part of the team strategy, there'd be a non-compete clause.

If there is then, depending on the personal reasons for the move and the level of animosity between the parties, I'd like to see us enforce it. Through the courts if necessary. As Hawthorn did when we tried to sign a couple of their contracted players to our inaugural list.

He could go work in the media for two years and not lose his livelihood.

Get over it eagles fans, he is an assistant coach you can easily replace and you won't be paying him out when he has chosen to leave.

It's not like he has just ditched you mid contract for money, his family want to go home and you do what is best for your family.

Please forward your comments to Bandwagon of Geelong (T Kelly wanna go home factor) - you might be able to sway him with your words of wisdom coming from a fellow Victorian....

So if good assistant coaches are easy to get why do they Carlton do just that?
