Early Axing Predictions!

D. Johnson is a cert to get the chop. Byrnes will go close, especially if Varcoe and Primall have good years.
Hogan is another one.
Tenace will still struggle for matches and will probably get picked up by another club.
N.Ablett won't come back.

why is every one wanting hogan axed his play on our list for one year his a devoloping player for god sakes with a light frame.

Brynes, has he really ever impressed anybody lol?

You would think he would be alright with the speed he has but he has a terrible football brain, well not terrible but he nearly always never performs he is a good VFL player but thats about it. But saying all that lets see what he can deliver this year

Probably the most impressive at the 2006 draft camp overall. Was basically drafted as a heavy jockey so as long as he shows signs of improvement then he'll have another few years of developing on the list. Even Owen (delisted this year) may've been offered another contract had he not injurred his knee. The club has been patient with it's playing list and we saw the results last September.

Assuming we could be in the hunt for some quality key position players, here's my trade list, and reasons why (remembering this is purely hypothetical):

Josh Hunt - made one too many mistakes in 08, and is offloaded as "100 game + Premiership defender."

Joel Corey - with Davenport and Selwood coming on so nicely in 08, Geelong bite the bullet and trade Corey to Fremantle or WCE for top 10 draft pick.

Tom Lonergan - doesn't cut the grade and is offered for trade, not picked up, and disappears. His departure made easier by the return of the hungrier prodigal son, Nathan A.

Mark Blake - never recovers from disappointment of being dropped for 07 grand final, while Trent West and newie, Dawson Simpson, leap frog Blake as 2nd & 3rd ruck choices - Cats trade Blake to St Kilda (Steven King plays 6 games in 08, is injured and gracefully retires) for Matt Maguire + 2nd round draft pick.

I agree with your opinion on Lonergan to go. Not neccessarily because of his ability, but to protect him from himself! He is lucky to be alive and I dont think it's wise to play a competition sport after already having a kidney removed!

well if he got dropped from the AFL he'd only go play in some bush league somewhere, play with the same determination, get badly hurt and probably die from the inferior medical support/facilities on hand. Better to keep him around technology.

Delistings

I was just looking at our player list and I know it's a long way off, but the selectors are going to have some real headaches at the end of the year trying to work out who to delist. For the sake of discussion, let's assume Nathan Ablett changes his mind and decides to return to the Cats, who would you delist (minimum 3)?

For me, I'm assuming all first and second year players are safe as they haven't had enough time to prove their worth. The players I think are in the gun are Byrnes, Gamble, D. Johnson, Lonergan and Tenace but you can make a reasonable case for each of these to be retained. There are going to be some unlucky players at the end of the year.

Of course there may be a few high profile players who go as a result of salary cap pressure, but let's assume we can keep them all for this thread.

Re: Delistings

Sorry mods, just saw similar thread further down on the forum. Feel free to merge this with it.

I will probably get hounded for this but Byrnes isn't half as bad as you lot make him out to be! Whilst he can't kick, he does provide an option as a lead up small forward/ tackler. If he could kick he would actually be very good.

Is that an oxymoron? (He's "not half as bad as...." then in the very next sentence "whilst he can't kick,..."!!!!!)

My point is that after watching many of the games from this season for the second and third times, you'll be suprised at how many times he wins the hard ball and dishes it out quickly by hand to a runner. And that if his kicking was decent, he'd be in the top 15 at the club (in my opinion). He knows where to run and lead.

Re: Delistings

Since we're talking about 2008 delistings already, why don't we also discuss potential delistings for '09 and'10. Oh and by the way, have ya got you're Chrissie presents sorted out yet?

I think Kane Tenace could be in the big poo, has been around long enough now and still his only asset is his speed. Just makes too many mistakes and his kicking lets him down.

But realisticly due to salary cap burdons, were gonna lose some decent talent, the question is who do we offload that takes a fair chunk of the salary cap, who wants him, and what are they prepared to give up?

Maybe if theres some players who come from interstate , they will put their hands up and say i wanna go home, but then again, who would want to leave a club thats going so well? Someone, and maybe more than one, are gonna have to go.

2008 delistings seems like a perfectly reasonable topic of discussion to me, particularly given the quality of our list this year (and also given it's pre-season when there's not much else to talk about - why, even you are here reading the thread). It's no worse than discussions regarding whether the Cats can pull off a repeat this year. Sure we are yet to see how each player performs this year, but based on last years form it is going to be a particularly difficult decision on delistings this year (no players in the Playfair, Spencer or Gardiner category, although I'm sure some will argue that Byrnes is).

If you don't like the topic, you don't have to read or post.

I dont think salary cap will be as much as a problem as we think. Alot of our players bleed Geelong, and they will almost certainly take a paycut; Ling, Chapman, Mooney, etc etc. Not to mention Milburn, Scarlet and Harley are either eligible for veterany or close enough to it. We'll be fine. might have to unload a couple of players like Hunt, but overall we will be good.
