Leading shield scorer dropped for the opening match for his state, so that, apparently, Smith wanted to see what Dan Hughes could do.
Farcical.
Farcical.

Actually, I think this decision would have been made on form. Look at Hughes stats in the recent one day cup 379 runs at 63.16 including two centuries and two half centuries compared to Cowan who only scored 146 runs at 36.50 with two half centuries. Also Hughes did play Sydney first grade on the weekend and scored 203*. So you can't say it wasn't chosen on form, as Hughes is clearly in pretty good form, but still it is a bit harsh that Cowan wasn't able to fit into the side considering he was last years leading run maker.Farcical is the best word to describe it!
Form should be the number 1 factor not potential.
This is the problem with Australian Cricket.
Imagine in any other workplace, sacking an employee who was performing better than anyone else, for someone with "potential"

Yes, fair point but ed Cowan still had the same amount of innings and his average is a lot lower. He had enough of an opportunity to score runs.man imagine if clarke had done this.
one opened and one batted at 5. ridiculous comparison
Its the reality of playing in the NSW side.
Cowan is a top 3 batsmen., and Smith/Warner are 2 of the best in the world in those spots.
Nic maddinson and David Hughes averaged 66 in the JLT. Patterson was in the A side 3 months ago and will play for Australia one day.
who do you drop for him?

Not really said nothing about test selection just said that based on Hughes recent form it was a fair call to give him the spot in a state side above CowanIf we're going on JLT form for first class selection then both Marsh boys have to play the 1st Test

Hughes 100% deserved his selection. Anybody who actually follows domestic cricket would know this.
Plenty of chances? He's played 17 FC games ffs. He’s had plenty of chances to replicate his list a form in shield and hasn’t done it.
If they want to talk about picking a guy in form how can they ignore the leading shield batsman from the most recent season

Test cricket you pick the players most likely to win you the series. Shield cricket you pick the players most likely to play for Australia. So if there were two spots up for grabs in the test side and one player had 17 matches, for an average record, the other was the highest run scorer in autralia’s Previous series and had a strong record, you’d pick the 17 match player?

I have no sympathy for the bloke.
Last year he was going to play a game in our association with another of his ex-Tassie teammates in ................ wait for it ................. D-Grade.
This is a synthetic grade where guys who have very limited ability run around and enjoy themselves playing on postage stamp sized grounds.
What a hero Big Ed is !!
That is the current modus operandi. One that ironically Cowan has been very vocal against.Test cricket you pick the players most likely to win you the series. Shield cricket you pick the players most likely to play for Australia.
It's also why Victoria has struggled to produce any test quality batsmen in forever. My biggest gripe is selecting a spud like Dan Christian who is never going to play test cricket ahead of a young bloke who averaged 50 in the JLT.Thus rendering the competition itself completely pointless, and Australia A tours equally useless.
Why not just make it an under 23s comp and pension the older guys into retirement.
Except in Victoria. Probably should have come here instead haha. That is the current modus operandi. One that ironically Cowan has been very vocal against.
To be honest I have lost interest in the national side for this very reason. I would even go further and suggest that at times players have been selected to play or tour for Australia not because of their current ability but because what they might be in the future.
I have no problem with 'Australia A' and the 20/20 format being used for projects and experiments, but the Australian Test and ODI teams (and squads) and also all State sides need to be selected purely on merit (form and pitch conditions), not for any other reason.
On Dan Hughes, it could be argued that he has been selected on form. I hope he can have a great domestic season in all forms of the game. Cowan has a right to feel aggrieved though. If spots were tight why couldn't NSW wait until Smith and Warner were on International duties before selecting Dan Hughes? Or is Australia that desperate to try and find a player for the Ashes? (Yes. Yes, they are)
