This is true.

But how many other blokes under the age of 30 have 6 shield tons at that average?

Shaun Marsh might be the only one.

Well, he has 5 FC centuries. But he averages 41. Not to say he should be in the side, but it's just funny that there's a crowd on this board who thinks the Steve Smith selection was the worst of all time, but will turn around and recommend someone like Ferguson. Not saying you did that.

Look, I just wanted an excuse to make that joke, okay?

Usually a Cowan supporter but that runout in the first dig looked ordinary, along with the run out when he made his ton. A seasoned campaigner should ber able to do those things well. Didn't see much of his knock today but 30-odd off 80-odd in a difficult little chase is a decent effort?

Will be in the first choice opening pair in India, but better not keep letting test chances go by without cashing in.

I didn't see a lot of him bat today, but Cowan's looked shaky playing the spinners.

His whole wide stance, like he's straddling a freakin' log, the bat waving high. It just didn't look balanced, nor did he look like he could play a variety of shots easily.

He looked downright awkward.

I didn't see the Aussie innings either but had it on the radio in the car. Herath and Dilshan seemed to be keeping some of our top order honest, especially as the pitch was wearing. Kerry 'O Keefe cheekily said that "a few Indian curators will be watching this with interest". I'm not sure if it was with specific reference to Cowan but your post made me wonder.. With Clarke our only accomplished player against spin, the Indian series could be a struggle if they get their act together

I only caught a few overs, to be honest. He just didn't look balanced or comfortable. Was really lunging down the pitch too.

He loves the cut shot to the spinners, which I reckon could get him in some real strife in India if variable bounce comes into play. I expect Dhoni (if he's skipper then!) to employ Ashwin early to Ed.

I dont think there is a more frustrating batsmen to watch. He is so far out of his depth, over thinking everything so much so that he becomes lazy in the simplest areas of his game. As has been touched on multiple times this thread, his running between wickets is absolutely abysmal. Ive seen potato's rolled down a strip of grass straighter and with more enthusiasm. Your an Australian opening batsmen for crying out loud, your not hitting spuds with a stick down at uncle pasqaulies potato farm put some bloody effort in.

Look i really do like Phil Hughes a lot more, but watching him and cowan swee.... no, i mean attempt to sweep was enough to make a grown man cry. They were both so far out of their dept when it comes to spin. If cow is to go on, he needs a lot of time in the nets with clarke coming into india to show him how to get his front foot to the pitch of the ball without just throwing his leg out as far as he can. This DRS nonsense has changed batting, first and formost a batter thinks just to get hi pad outside the line of off stump and then thinks about playing a shot.

3 out of 10 spuds in my book.

Interesting with Hughes, Kerry was prattling on on 3LO the other day how Hughes didn't have a sweep shot and needed one so the spinners didn't tie him down. Almost on cue he unleashed a beautiful sweep in his first innings.

With Cowan, my impression was he looked so heavy and awkward on his feet. He didn't look like he could adjust easily. His stance with his feet so far apart too.

His big test, undoubtedly, is coming up.

not good enough !!!!

Nice. Care to name who replaces him or or you just going to leave it at that?

The '!!!!' also made your point come across a lot better.

As isolated incidents those two scores in the first test were fairly decent innings. But as a whole its really disappointing. His last 8 innings have prouced 2 failures, which is more than acceptable but then 6 scores between 29 and 56. So he isn't in bad form, just something happens between the ears at about that 80-100 delivery mark.

Whilst Cowan isn't performing as well as some would like I still want to know why the love is there for Watson, they bloke is the most overrated test cricketer in the world.

Since Cowan's debut average 32.65 5x50 1x100
Watson ave 30.07 3x50 0x100

Warner has declared he likes batting with Cowan and considering that he is our second best batsman and only other batsman apart from Clarke who is world class I'd go with Warner on this.

It's a pity the selectors wont even consider Buck Rogers.
Given he visibly struggled against a much better Indian attack at the WACA, I'm not sure how much better he'd do than our current batsmen. Like most Shield guys he's a bit clueless against spin.

He really does need to be in the equation for England though, plays well on greentops. Maybe he ran over Inverarity's dog or something.

khawaja deserves 15 tests in a row to see if he has what it takes.

watson can always go back and open (but even watto is treading water at the moment - but they love him so they'll persist with him for now).

at the moment there aren't any shield batsmen knocking down the door making runs, but it's time we just about plucked one out and gave them a go.

it's a sad state of affairs when only clarke and warner are the only 2 that have a test batting ave of 40+.
