It's a reflection of how many runs a guy scores, which is fairly important for a batsman.
Disregarding averages is just another way of disregarding facts.
It's ordinary.
Cowan is lucky there aren't an other bats demanding his spot.
I like to actually watch blokes bat and make a judgement from there, rather than going 'oh so and so is averaging 55 for tassie, give him a baggy green'. For example doolan averages 57, and ferguson 47, yet I'd still much rather have ferguson in the team to replace Hussey than doolan.
35 is pretty ordinary, but a lot better openers have started their careers in much worse fashion than he, and even though I'm a fan, the next year will be the difference between him being the next Michael Hussey, or the next Chris Rogers.
