Wasn't sold on him in the preseason but he'd be top 5 in the B&F after 3 rounds.

Hasn't missed a beat in transitioning to AFL level. Even more remarkable when you consider he's coming off a broken leg.

I'm a little surprised on that comment.
He looked quality from day one through the pre-season as did Duigan for us.

All the wraps are on Curnow for now, but we haven't seen the best of Duigan just yet.
I do hope we allow him the weeks to adjust, for him to show us just how good he really can be.

Didn't see him train but didn't find him overly impressive in the preseason games. Probably not surprising given he's coming back from a leg and shoulder.

Maybe not quite the find, but moreso the gall to select a 21 year old.
So we may get only 10 good years out of him instead of 11 or 12.

The unfashionable looks likley to become fashionable again after some great results emanating from mature-aged pick-ups this year.

I think the re-invention of the VFL has made it a viable area for older recruitment, similarly the SANFL and WAFL are strengthened by the inclusion of AFL level players but perhaps not the same extent. .. It can only be good for the late bloomers of the footy world. ..

curnow is more proof that you dont need to trade pick 11 to find a player for your needs.shows how amateur ratten is at this job(see voss as well).
that is one decision i can not come to forgive ratten 4.

Ratts might have had influence on that selection but to can him for one bad selection when we have so many good ones (would argue Ratts had influence on getting Watson). .. You cannot compare the one selection to Voss' implosion at Brissy but similarly it is a gamble that hasn't come off so far. .. Ratts has come a long way since the McLean selection though and he is leaving the recruitment mostly to the experts. ..

We should contiune to recruit ready-made players. If there's room we should draft about 4 to 5. No point of drafting really yound kids if we plan a premiership threat in the next few years.

I think that was my point. ..I just brought up Watson as one that you could see was part of Ratts' discussions. .. Its similar to when we blame Ratts for bad play and praise others for good play, it cannot work that way. ..

Why was it amateurish to trade for a player who filled a need?

The difference in McLean and Carrazzo's disposal is hardly significant. McLean is no super boot.

At the time of the Brock trade, there probably wasn't anyone else available to fill that need. If Brock could get his body right, then it would probably be regarded as a good trade. To say it was amateurish is just plain wrong. If there was a better option at the time I'm sure the recruitment team (and I emphasise the word team) would have gone that option instead.

Curnow was a speculative pick in the rookie draft who was not expected to have much impact this year following his injury last year. There was never any question over his work ethic and is this is a big reason why he is now flourishing.

I don't understand all the negativity towards Ratten, but that is people's opinion and that's fine. Just at the least put forward realistic arguments for your opinions so you don't look like a goose with an agenda.

And Curnow is a gun! (except for that handball that resulted in point of the year to Krakouer).

Attack the ND looking for the best young kids and target 1 or 2 mature aged recruits mixed in with more youngsters in the other drafts.

IMO Judd isn't the pinnacle of our flag chances with this list. He could lift as to one prematurely but personally I think our main tilts will be when Murphy, Gibbs, Kreuzer, Armfield, Betts, Walker, Jamison, Yarran, Lucas, Warnock, Bower, Russell, Curnow, Henderson, Garlett, Robinson, Watson, McCarthy, Mitchell etc are all in that 23-28 age bracket. That's still a few years away. Judd will hopefully still be a older support act but we need to remember that he wont carry us forever. Take him away now and we'd go backwards for a bit, sure. But that wouldn't change the fact that we have a pretty talented group of youngsters.

We shouldn't get in to the mindset that we absolutely must win a flag in the next 3 years so we should sell the farm to ensure that. IMO our senior group isn't good enough just yet. It's that next wave of seniors that I mentioned that will take us there. That's the group that we should be investing in.

Well posted, this is what I am keen on, would obviously like to reward Judd with a Premiership. .. The odd recycled 21-23yo wouldn't go astray but we should look to continue to select and blood a mix of youth to keep the team hungry. ..

no agenda just stating facts and the buck stops with ratten hes the boss.p.s. remember chris johnson he was meant to fill a need as well,these decisions just lack imagination especially when you have the answer under your nose

We could not have known that McLean wasnt going to get his body right (I dont buy this injury prone rubbish, none of the injuries are in any way related and there is nothing yet discovered in dna that points to injury susceptibility, it is sheer bad luck, nothing more, there may be a tad of poor management but that is not entirely McLean's fault is it). And had Mclean have got his body right we may never have recruited Curnow as the need for him may have been filled.

And Mclean may yet get his body right and we will have an abundance of riches with pressure for spots all over the ground including the in and under mid. We have tried a few over the years. Anyone miss Adam Bentick? Seemed like a travesty when he was delisted. McLean may go the same way. If so Meh. You roll the dice. You have to. We had no other choice at the time. We do now. So what.

The McLean trade was terrible, pick 11 for a midfield player from a bottom of the ladder club, who had past injury problems.

He was not a star player nor does he have stand out skills such as pace elite kicking etc.He only had the in under work to back his game.

I understand this was a position that we had to fill, But our solution to get the player we needed was shocking.

If we were going to address the players we were in need of by using that tactic, we might as well use our top draft picks on a key back or target a premium player.

There are a lot of VFL players that fit the bill of McLean. Just look at Curnow he's "in and under" work is as good as brock's but he has more strings to his bow such as kicking, pace, youth.

McLean at his best is a very good hard ball getter, just wondering what everyone else thought.

I meant you can find players in the VFL that have the talent to be just as good or better then some AFL players. Which in this case i believe Curnow is better then McLean. And we only had to use a rookie pick to get him, Not our first draft pick(McLean).
