Looks that way after Balmey just spoke on the radio. I wonder what went wrong in the past couple of weeks.

Sad loss

Egan's career potentially over

According to Neil Balme, five minutes ago on SEN. Barring essentially a miracle, he won't play this year and might not play again.

A friend of mine saw Egan at the gym in Port about two weeks ago and said he was limping terribly so it was no surprise.

To me this is almost more disappointing than the Grand Final. Just devastated.

Breaking News - Egan may never play again

Addy website. Ego hasn't recovered from his injury and there are concerns he may never play again.

Re: Breaking News - Egan may never play again

ha ha ha, and I held off waiting for someone else to create a thread :)
Didn't hang long enough

Couple of weeks? Think he's been screwed ever since he pushed it to make the 2007 GF :(
Yeah but I emailed his old man a month back and he said to me that he is running and will be ok for preseason, so something has happened. Could email him again I guess but it probably doesn't matter now. It's obvious that nobody has any answers.

Re: Breaking News - Egan may never play again

thats just bloody horrible.
Another Jason Snell tragety story on the cards here.

Re: Egan's career potentially over

Just horrible news. There are going to be a lot of questions as to how it was initially handled...

Re: Egan's career potentially over

  • THE career of Geelong's former All-Australian defender Matthew Egan may be finished after a poor medical report.
Egan was delivered the bad news after meeting with a specialist this week to assess the progress of his rehabilitation from a broken foot.

The centre-half back has limited motion in his foot and his ability to return to the field is now in doubt.

“Matthew met with the specialist in Sydney this week and the report was not good,” Geelong’s football operations manager Neil Balme said.

doesnt sound to good

Re: Egan's career potentially over

Terribly sad news for such a talented young guy. The sad reality was that even if he came back..would he ever have been the player he was before the injury?
I guess the hard question now is...do Geelong de-list him or just place him on the long-term injury list and promote a rookie..eg Ranga?

Puts more pressure on Harry Taylor...or does it throw open a permanent spot for Tom Lonergan to fill if he focuses on being CHB not FF?

Re: Egan's career potentially over

On par with the Grand Final loss. GF's you can get another chance at, but never seeing Ego play again is just horrible. Not quite the extent of Snell's injury but the result could be just as bad.

Neil reported a few months back that Egan had a major setback early on - from memory a screw came loose or something.

Hird took two to three years to get over his, it almost ended his career.

This is one of the biggest disappointments I can remember in terms of an up and coming player who had just "made it". I really, really feel for him.

Re: Egan's career potentially over

Absolutely shattered for the guy. One has to wonder if it would have been this bad if they didn't try and rush him back for the 07 grand final.

I think it's too late for delistings,isn't it ?
Remember the whingers over NA retiring after the cut off last year.

Re: Egan's career potentially over

Just heard from a mate of mine that Geelong have called a press conference for 12noon re: Egan retiring.

Re: Egan's career potentially over

Totally gutted for the poor bloke. I don't think many could comprehend what he is going through. Head up ego, there is some hope

Re: Egan's career potentially over

As an opposition supporter, I really enjoyed the development of Egan as a CHB and rated him very highly. Harry Taylor did a mighty job this year, but I was looking foward to seeing Matt back on the field in 2009.

If it is the end, it will be a real shame.

Re: Egan's career potentially over

feel terrible for the guy... probably the most underrated player on the list. and also one of the most important, the way he could hold down the oppositions number one forward in 07 and allow scarlett to play a rebounding role made egans worth twofold, literally.

really hope he gets back even if he's not as dominant just for his sake.

just got me wondering though, places a huge amount of pressure on harry taylor, as i thought he might be the one to make way for egan next year possibly.

also with this news coming before draft day, do you think this throws a spanner in the works and raises the possibility of us taking a trengrove if somehow available or possibly a mckernan or some other key defender prospect???
